Use a popup for a designed overlay with visitor or page targeting; hosted and custom-coded forms suit other needs.
Choose the form type that fits your site
| Form type | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded | A form placed directly in a page or section | Generate the code in Mailchimp and paste it into your site. It inherits the site’s stylesheet, and edits in Mailchimp do not automatically update code already on the page. Mailchimp’s embedded-form guide explains the workflow. |
| Popup | A designed overlay with visitor or page targeting | Build it in the popup forms area, set its appearance and targeting, and publish it to a connected site or Shopify store. Mailchimp says popup forms are single opt-in by default. See Mailchimp’s popup-form instructions. |
| Hosted | A shareable form hosted by Mailchimp | Use the hosted form when you want a Mailchimp-hosted destination rather than embedding a form in your page. |
| Custom-coded | A form built and hosted on your own site | Requires coding familiarity. The form action, user ID, audience ID, and exact input names must match the hosted form source; test every field. Mailchimp’s custom-form guidance covers these details. |
Choose based on placement, styling control, targeting, and comfort with code. The available documentation does not establish that one form type converts better for every site.

Create and publish an embedded signup form
- In Mailchimp, open Forms and choose Create form.
- Choose Embedded form, name the form, select the audience that should receive signups, and continue to the builder.
- Enable, disable, or reorder audience fields. Configure options such as the title, width, JavaScript, email-format choices, and campaign archive link. Add tags if you want to identify the signup source. Mailchimp lists the embedded-form settings.
- Generate and copy the form code, then paste it into the intended location on your website. The live appearance may differ from the builder because the form inherits your site’s stylesheet.
- Submit a test signup. Confirm the contact appears in the selected audience and that each field contains the expected value.
If you change the form after publishing it, generate fresh code and replace the old embed on your page. Mailchimp does not automatically push embedded-form edits to code already pasted on your site.

Build a popup form
- Open the Popup forms area and start creating a form.
- Choose an incentive and template, name the form, select its audience, and choose the information to collect.
- Customize the layout and design, save, and review the setup checklist.
- Set where the popup can appear and which visitors should see it, such as new visitors or all visitors.
- Connect a website or Shopify store before enabling the popup.
A popup is single opt-in by default, according to Mailchimp’s popup-form documentation. If you collect phone numbers for SMS marketing, use the SMS field and obtain SMS marketing approval. An email signup alone is not permission to send marketing texts.

Set the audience, opt-in, and consent details
Mailchimp audiences can use single opt-in, which adds subscribed contacts immediately, or double opt-in, which sends an email confirmation step. Review the setting for the audience and form you are using; do not assume every form type has the same default.
For GDPR-related consent, Mailchimp describes adding marketing-permission fields and explanatory text about how data will be used. Its guidance suggests considering double opt-in as additional evidence of consent. Mailchimp’s material is product guidance, not legal advice; make sure your wording and practices fit the laws that apply to your business and contacts. See Mailchimp’s GDPR guidance.
Rank #2
Mailchimp says hosted-form audience exports can include signup time and IP fields. For double opt-in, exports can also include confirmation time and IP fields. These records do not replace the need for appropriate consent language and practices.

- The embedded form looks different on the live page: it inherits your website’s stylesheet. Inspect the published page and adjust the site-level styling or form code.
- Changes are missing from the website: generate updated embed code in Mailchimp and replace the code already pasted into the page.
- The form remains after you delete it in Mailchimp: deleting the form does not remove its code from your website. Remove that code from the page separately.
- A custom form puts data in the wrong fields or leaves fields blank: compare the form action and each input name with the hosted form source, then test the fields and inspect the subscriber profile.
- A popup cannot be enabled: check that a website or Shopify store is connected.
If you use WordPress, Mailchimp documents several ways to add a signup form; the available method depends on how your site is set up. See Mailchimp’s WordPress signup-form options.
