You can create an Oracle Account at no cost, but you do not always need one to download Java. Current Oracle JDK releases such as JDK 25 and JDK 26 are listed under Oracle’s No-Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC), while many older or OTN-licensed downloads require sign-in. Oracle OpenJDK can normally be downloaded without an Oracle Account.
This guide shows how to register, verify your email, choose the right JDK package, install it, and check the license that applies to your exact version and update.
Do you actually need an Oracle Account?
The account requirement depends on the distribution, version, update number, and license attached to the download.
| Download | Account situation | License qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Oracle JDK 26 | Usually no account or click-through license for current NFTC downloads | Confirm the terms shown on the download page |
| Oracle JDK 25 | Current downloads are listed under NFTC | Future updates can change license treatment |
| Oracle JDK 21 | Current NFTC period applies through September 2026 | Later updates are planned to move to OTN terms |
| Oracle JDK 17 | Depends on the update | Oracle lists versions through 17.0.12 under NFTC and later updates under OTN for applicable users |
| Oracle JDK 11 | Oracle Account generally required for OTN downloads | Free use is limited by the OTN license |
| Oracle JDK 8 | Current OTN downloads generally require an account | Do not apply old 8u202-and-earlier advice to newer updates |
| Oracle OpenJDK | Normally no Oracle Account | Oracle identifies these builds as GPLv2 with Classpath Exception |
Oracle’s licensing FAQ explains the current split between NFTC, OTN, and OpenJDK terms: Oracle Java licensing FAQ. The Java download guide says an Oracle Account is required for releases covered by the OTN license: Java download guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAs of August 18, 2026, Oracle lists JDK 26 as its latest feature release and JDK 25 as its latest Long-Term Support release. Release status and licensing are volatile, so check the current download page before choosing a version: Oracle Java downloads.
What you need before registering
- A permanent email address that you control. The address normally becomes your Oracle username.
- A password manager or another secure way to save the password.
- Your operating system and CPU architecture, such as Windows x64 or macOS ARM64.
- The exact Java version required by your application or course.
- A browser with JavaScript enabled.
You do not need an Oracle Cloud Free Tier account or a credit card for an ordinary Oracle Account. Cloud signup has separate eligibility and billing rules and is unnecessary for a JDK download: Oracle Cloud signup.
Create the free Oracle Account
- Open Oracle’s account-creation page.
- Select Create Account, or the equivalent registration link if the page first shows a sign-in form.
- Enter the email address you want to use as your username.
- Create and confirm a password that meets the rules displayed on the live form. The current form requires at least eight characters, uppercase and lowercase letters, a number, and a special character; it must not match or contain your email address.
- Choose your country or territory.
- Complete the requested name and contact fields. The form may ask for a job title, work phone, company, address, city, state or province, and postal code. Fields vary by country and account flow; a corporate email address is not established as universally mandatory.
- Review the Oracle terms and privacy information, then select Create Account.
Use an address you will retain after changing jobs, and avoid shared mailboxes or distribution lists. Oracle discourages shared accounts because the email address functions as the username: Oracle account help.
Verify your email address
- Open the verification message from Oracle.
- Select Verify Email Address, or the equivalent confirmation control.
- Return to the Java download page and choose Sign In.
- Enter the email address and password you registered.
If the message is missing, check spam, junk, promotions, and corporate quarantine folders. Search for “Oracle,” “[email protected],” or “verify.” Confirm that you entered the address correctly and use Oracle’s resend-verification option. Oracle says an account that remains unverified may need to be recreated: account recovery and verification help.
Sign in and download the JDK
- Open Oracle’s Java downloads page.
- Sign in if the selected release requires an account.
- Select the required JDK version.
- Choose your operating system, CPU architecture, and package format.
- Accept the displayed license agreement when Oracle presents one.
- Save the installer or archive to a location you can find.
Do not use Java.com’s consumer download for development. That site primarily serves people who need Java to run desktop applications: Java.com download.
Choose the correct JDK package
| System | Typical choice |
|---|---|
| Windows on Intel or AMD | Windows x64 installer |
| Mac with Intel processor | macOS x64 installer |
| Mac with Apple silicon | macOS ARM64 installer |
| Debian or Ubuntu Linux | .deb package or compressed archive |
| Fedora, RHEL, or Oracle Linux | .rpm package or compressed archive |
| ARM-based Linux | ARM64 package or compressed archive |
Architecture terms
- x64, x86_64, or Intel 64: common on Windows PCs, Intel Macs, and many Linux computers.
- ARM64 or AArch64: used by Apple-silicon Macs and ARM Linux devices.
Installer versus archive
- Use a Windows installer or macOS DMG for the simplest graphical setup.
- Use a Linux .deb or .rpm when you want package-manager integration.
- Use a compressed archive for a custom directory, portable installation, server, or no-system-change setup.
Oracle’s platform documentation lists the available JDK packages and architectures: JDK installation guide.
Install and verify Java
Install the downloaded package using your operating system’s normal installer. Then open a new terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell window and run:
java -version
javac -version
java -version reports the runtime. javac -version confirms that the JDK compiler is available. The vendor, build number, and patch text will vary by release.

where java
where javac
Use those commands on Windows. On macOS and Linux, use:
which java

If javac is missing, you may have installed only a runtime, be using another Java installation first in PATH, or need to add the JDK’s bin directory to your environment.

Troubleshoot common account problems
Password rejected
Follow the rules shown by the live registration form rather than an old screenshot. Include eight or more characters, upper- and lowercase letters, a number, and a special character, and do not include your email address. Repeated failed sign-ins can lock the account; Oracle recommends clearing the browser cache and resetting the password.
“Invalid login” or account confusion
An Oracle Account, Oracle Cloud account, and My Oracle Support account are separate systems. An ordinary download account does not create a Cloud tenancy or provide support entitlement. My Oracle Support access depends on an applicable support relationship: My Oracle Support sign-in.

The release may be covered by OTN rather than NFTC. Sign in with the verified Oracle Account and accept the applicable terms. Do not attempt to bypass the account or license gate with an automated script.
Wrong architecture
An installer for x64 will not be the right native build for an Apple-silicon Mac or ARM Linux device. Check the processor architecture in your operating-system information and download the matching package.
You need an older JDK
Use Oracle’s archive only when a compatibility requirement demands it: Oracle Java archive downloads. Oracle warns that archived releases do not receive the latest security patches and are not recommended for production.

Is Oracle JDK free for commercial use?
There is no single answer for every Oracle JDK. Oracle’s NFTC can permit free use, including commercial and production use, subject to its conditions. OTN permits specified uses such as personal use, development, testing, prototyping, and demonstration; it does not automatically make every commercial or production deployment free.
Check the exact version and update, the license displayed with that download, your deployment purpose, and whether you need Oracle support or ongoing security updates after a licensing transition. Historical advice also differs: Java SE 8u202 and earlier had different treatment from 8u211 and later, and JDK 17 terms depend on the update level.
Organizations with legacy JDK 8, 11, or 17 production fleets should review Oracle’s current terms and, where appropriate, evaluate commercial licensing or another supported distribution. Oracle’s Java SE subscription information is at Oracle Java SE Subscription.
Download Java without creating an Oracle Account
If you do not specifically need the Oracle-branded JDK, download Oracle OpenJDK from jdk.java.net. Oracle identifies these builds as GPLv2 with Classpath Exception. They are a separate distribution from Oracle JDK, so confirm that your software vendor does not require Oracle JDK by name.
Other OpenJDK distributions include Eclipse Temurin, Amazon Corretto, Azul Zulu, Microsoft Build of OpenJDK, and IBM Semeru. Their release schedules, support policies, components, and commercial terms differ.
Best Value
If you only need to run a Java application
A full JDK is intended for development and includes tools such as the compiler, debugger, launcher, libraries, and runtime components. Someone running a third-party application may instead need the runtime bundled with that application, a vendor-supplied runtime, or a JRE-style package. Follow the application maker’s instructions before installing a development kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Oracle Account really free?
Yes. Oracle presents ordinary account registration as free. It is separate from paid Oracle Cloud services and does not itself create a Cloud tenancy.
Can I use Gmail or another personal email?
The registration form requests an email address that becomes the username, but the available account information does not establish that a corporate address is mandatory. Use an address you control permanently.
Do I need a credit card?
Not for a normal Oracle Account or ordinary JDK download. Credit-card and billing requirements belong to separate Oracle Cloud signup flows.
Recommended Free Tools
Which JDK should I install on an Apple-silicon Mac?
Choose the macOS ARM64 build. Intel Macs require the macOS x64 build.
What does “javac is not recognized” mean?
The compiler is not available through your current PATH. Check that a JDK, rather than only a runtime, is installed, then inspect the active executable with `where javac` on Windows or `which javac` on macOS and Linux.
