How to Create a Continuous YouTube Stream from Podcast Episodes in Audacity

Audacity prepares and locally loops podcast audio; a streaming encoder sends it to YouTube Live. Here’s how to assemble episodes, connect the encoder, and check continuity and copyright.

Audacity can prepare and locally loop podcast episodes, but it does not transmit them to YouTube Live by itself. To create a continuous YouTube stream, assemble and export your audio in Audacity, then send it through a compatible streaming encoder connected to your YouTube Live server URL and stream key. If you need the stream to repeat unattended, make sure your chosen playback and encoder setup can do that; Audacity’s loop control alone is only for local playback.

What Audacity can—and cannot—do

Audacity is useful for assembling, editing, listening to, and exporting your podcast audio. Its loop control repeats a marked region during playback; the Audacity Manual says the L shortcut enables looping. That repeats audio on your computer, not on YouTube.

YouTube Live requires a streaming encoder to send the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the stream’s YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. The documented workflow does not establish that Audacity alone can send an endlessly repeating playlist to YouTube Live.

Prepare the podcast episodes in Audacity

  1. Import the source audio. Open the episode files you want to include in an Audacity project.
  2. Arrange the episodes. Put them in the order you want listeners to hear. Review the transitions, overlaps, and silence between episodes.
  3. Listen through the joins. Check the start and end of each segment so that abrupt cuts, unwanted gaps, or repeated audio do not surprise listeners. Audacity’s loop playback can help you listen to a marked passage repeatedly, but it is not the YouTube transmission step.
  4. Choose what to export. Audacity supports exporting the full project mix, a selected region, or audio within the loop region. Export the whole assembled show if that is what your encoder will play; export a selection or loop region only when you deliberately want that portion.
  5. Set the export format and audio options. In Audacity’s export dialog, select a format and the available audio options, which can include mono or stereo, sample rate, and bitrate for supported formats. There is no single YouTube-specific Audacity preset established here; follow the current requirements of your encoder and destination rather than assuming one setting fits every setup.

Audacity’s export documentation covers the available export scopes and adjustable audio options: Export your audio. Its playback guidance explains loop-region playback: Playing and Recording.

Create and connect the YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.
  2. Get the stream connection details. YouTube provides a Live server URL and stream key for the stream. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that stream.
  3. Configure your encoder. If it offers YouTube as a streaming service, choose that option and follow its prompts. Otherwise, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
  4. Provide the prepared audio to the encoder. Use the encoder’s supported way to play or supply the exported file. The exact steps depend on the encoder and operating system; Audacity export by itself does not connect the file to YouTube.
  5. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and click Go live. Confirm that the audio is audible and the stream is in the intended state before leaving it unattended.
  6. End the broadcast deliberately. Use YouTube’s current end-stream procedure when finished. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or more.

See YouTube’s current guide, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, for its Live Control Room and encoder workflow.

Make the stream continuous, not just live

A stream can be live while the audio is not actually repeating. The essential distinction is what happens after the prepared audio reaches its end: your playback-and-encoder arrangement must start it again or otherwise provide the next audio. Audacity’s loop playback repeats a region during local playback, but the available Audacity and YouTube instructions do not specify an automated, endlessly repeating file-playback configuration for a particular encoder or operating system.

Before relying on a do-it-yourself setup, test the entire chain—including what happens at the end of the file, after an encoder interruption, and if the computer or internet connection stops. Consult the current instructions for your specific encoder to determine whether and how it can repeat a file or playlist. Do not assume Audacity’s local loop button will make the YouTube broadcast continuous.

Check copyright before you broadcast

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also warns that having a license does not necessarily prevent interruption: the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID.

Before including music, clips, guest material, or other third-party content in a podcast stream, confirm that you have the necessary rights for this use and that any required channel allowlisting is in place. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • You hear the loop locally, but YouTube is not live: Audacity loop playback is not a transmission connection. Create the stream in YouTube Studio and connect a compatible encoder using the stream URL and key.
  • The encoder will not connect: Check that you selected YouTube if the encoder has a service option, or that you entered the correct server URL and stream key for this stream. Recheck the encoder’s current connection instructions.
  • YouTube shows a preview, but viewers cannot hear the podcast: Confirm that the encoder is receiving and sending the intended audio source, then check the preview before going live. The exact audio-source controls vary by encoder and operating system.
  • The stream stops when the exported file ends: The playback source has reached the end. Check whether your encoder supports repeating a file or playlist and configure it according to that encoder’s instructions; Audacity loop playback alone does not establish that behavior in the encoder.
  • The broadcast is interrupted or replaced: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the live copyright guidance, verify your rights, and check with the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting if you are licensed to use the material.
  • The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s cited automatic-archiving statement applies to streams under 12 hours. It does not establish automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or more.
