Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can make a website feel raw and uncompromising without making it hard to read. Start with clear content and structure, then use stark typography, color, and layout while keeping text legible, controls recognizable, and pages usable on small screens and with a keyboard. Brutalist Web Design, as described by David Bryant Copeland, is design guidance—not a formal web standard. Its central test is practical: content should remain readable on reasonable screens and devices. Copeland’s Brutalist Web Design guidance was last updated June 1, 2025.
What makes a website brutalist—and what does not?
Brutalist web design favors directness and a deliberately unpolished visual character. That can mean strong, unembellished type, visible structure, simple blocks of color, or layouts that avoid decorative polish. But there is no formal standard that certifies a site as “brutalist,” and rawness is not a reason to make content or controls difficult to use.

Copeland’s guidance puts content and the visitor first. It also says that only hyperlinks and buttons should respond to clicks. In practice, that means a stark visual treatment can be expressive, while clickable items still look and behave like familiar interactive elements.

Write the content and establish its hierarchy before applying visual effects. Use headings to describe the document’s structure, not just to obtain a particular font size. Mark up lists as lists, links as links, buttons as buttons, and form controls with labels that explain their purpose. Semantic structure helps assistive technology interpret the page and gives visual styling a sound foundation. W3C’s accessibility principles cover semantic structure and other ways content can be made more accessible.

Once the structure works without visual styling, use the design to emphasize the hierarchy rather than obscure it. A plain visual language can still make the page title, section headings, body copy, and actions easy to distinguish.
Make typography legible at every intended size
A raw look does not require tiny text, compressed line spacing, or paragraphs stretched from edge to edge. Choose a typeface and weight that remain legible in context, and check both text size and line width across viewport sizes. The W3C recommends optimizing those choices for readability and legibility, but does not prescribe a universal font size or line length.
Check the text at its default size and after enlarging it. WCAG 2.2 Level AA requires text to be resizable up to 200% without loss of content or functionality. That is a criterion to test—not a recommendation to set every page’s default type at a particular size. WCAG 2.2 is a W3C Recommendation dated October 5, 2023.
Use a stark palette and check actual contrast
Minimal colors can still provide strong contrast, but assess every real foreground-and-background combination: body text, headings, buttons, text over images, and text placed on gradients. Under WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the minimum contrast ratio is 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, subject to the standard’s exceptions. These are contrast criteria, not proof that a palette is comfortable for every reader. W3C notes that bright, high-luminance colors can also be difficult for some people.
Rank #3
Do not rely on color alone to communicate meaning or status. If color marks an error, selected state, or category, pair it with a text label, shape, icon with an appropriate text equivalent, or another visible distinction. W3C’s design guidance discusses contrast, color, text, and interaction states.
Make links, buttons, and focus easy to recognize
Give links and buttons clear, consistent visual treatments so visitors can tell what is interactive. Underlines, borders, or other distinct treatments can work with a stark aesthetic; the key is that visitors should not have to guess. Keep hover, keyboard-focus, and touch states distinguishable, and make the keyboard focus indicator visible.

Check that the page’s functions work with a keyboard and that navigation labels and placement remain consistent. A visual design can be unconventional without making navigation unpredictable. W3C’s accessibility principles address keyboard access and predictable navigation.

Test narrow screens, zoom, and reflow
Inspect the page on a narrow mobile viewport and with browser zoom or enlarged text. WCAG 2.2 Level AA’s reflow criterion covers vertically scrolling content at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels without loss of information or functionality, except where a two-dimensional layout is essential. Look for horizontal scrolling, clipped text, controls that overlap, or a reading order that becomes confusing.
Best Value
Also confirm that headings, paragraphs, and controls remain in a useful sequence when the page narrows. Test the actual content and interactions; a layout that looks orderly at desktop width may not remain usable when text grows or columns collapse. The W3C’s design tips cover readable text and responsive presentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep wayfinding and language clear
Use descriptive headings and consistent navigation so visitors can tell where they are and where a link will take them. When it suits the site, offer more than one way to locate content. Write instructions plainly for the subject and audience, identify the page’s primary language in markup, and explain unusual terms. Visual simplicity is not a reason to make copy cryptic. W3C’s accessibility principles address language, understandable content, and navigation.
Review the design with a practical checklist
Use automated checks as aids, not as a verdict. Contrast tools and viewport previews can flag issues, but they cannot establish that the page is comfortable or clear for every reader. Review the rendered experience as well as the markup.
Recommended Free Tools
- Content and structure: Headings describe the hierarchy; lists, links, buttons, and form labels use the right semantic roles.
- Text: Body copy and headings remain legible across intended viewport sizes and when enlarged.
- Contrast and meaning: Text has adequate contrast against its actual background, and color is not the only signal.
- Interaction: Links and buttons are recognizable; keyboard use works; focus is visible; labels and navigation are predictable.
- Responsive behavior: At narrow and zoomed sizes, content and functions remain available without avoidable horizontal scrolling.
- Understanding: Copy is clear, the page language is identified, and unusual terms are explained.
Compare design directions by checking the same qualities in each: text hierarchy and wrapping, contrast and color meaning, recognizable controls and keyboard access, reflow at narrow sizes, and understandable content. WCAG criteria offer checkable requirements, but a site’s actual conformance depends on evaluation; an intended aesthetic or automated score cannot establish it.
