Test grip strength and object-handling accuracy as separate capabilities, then report how the hand performs on complete tasks. Use calibrated force fixtures to measure what the hand can apply or resist, and an independent pose-tracking system to measure how accurately it moves an object. Record the grasp, object, controller, setup, and every failure so results can be repeated and compared.

What the tests measure

“Grip strength” is not a single number. Finger force, pinch force, wrap-grasp force, payload capability, and resistance to an object being pulled or pushed out of a grasp describe related but different properties. NIST defines grasp strength as the maximum force a robotic hand can impose on an object; it helps characterize payload capability across object sizes and resistance to disturbances. NIST’s broader framework separates kinetics—force and effort—from kinematics such as position, velocity, and acceleration, and recommends independent measurement systems for comparative ground truth. NIST grasp metrics and test methods.

Object-handling accuracy is about whether the object reaches and follows the intended pose, not just whether the hand keeps hold of it. Measure the object’s actual position and orientation independently of the robot’s own estimate, then compare that reference with the desired pose over the motion. NIST defines in-hand manipulation efficacy in terms of desired-versus-measured Cartesian object-pose error over time; it also treats object-pose estimation accuracy as a separate metric.

Plan a fair, repeatable test

Decide whether you are testing the hand or the whole humanoid

For an intrinsic hand comparison, keep the arm pose, object presentation, sensing input, controller, and environment constant. Use independent instruments for force and pose reference. If perception and arm movement are included, label the result as integrated humanoid performance: those components can affect the outcome even when the hand itself is unchanged. NIST advises isolating hand capability from other system components when evaluating the hand intrinsically (NIST metrics and test methods).

Choose grasps and objects before testing

At minimum, include a precision pinch and a power or wrap grasp, and test more than one object dimension. Vary shape, mass, and surface where relevant to the application. Use a calibrated artifact for controlled force measurements and a documented object set or application-specific objects for handling tasks. ASTM work item WK83863 describes split artifacts of differing geometries and sizes for pinch and wrap testing, but it is a work item, not a published standard: ASTM WK83863.

For broader task coverage, the published Anthropomorphic Hand Assessment Protocol (AHAP) used 25 YCB objects across 26 postures and tasks and reports a Grasping Ability Score. It is a useful example, not a universal object list for every humanoid application: AHAP article.

Log conditions that can change the result

  • Hand configuration, fingertip and palm materials, controller, and firmware.
  • Object dimensions, mass, contact surface, presentation, and approach pose.
  • Commanded force or motion, loading rate, disturbance direction, and whether grip force is actively adjusted.
  • Instrument calibration, tracking method, environment, success criteria, and trial count.
  • For each trial: peak force, task time, object motion, slips, drops, unintended contacts, and other failures.

The cited sources support repeatable comparison but do not establish a universal trial count or pass threshold for a combined humanoid-hand protocol.

Measure finger and grasp strength

Test individual fingers

  1. Place one finger against an instrumented surface or force sensor. Specify the contact location and force direction.
  2. Increase commanded force consistently across trials and record peak force.
  3. Repeat for each finger. NIST notes that nominally equivalent fingers can differ, so an overall hand result should not conceal finger-to-finger variation.

Test pinch and wrap grasps

  1. Use a split-cylinder or equivalent instrumented artifact whose geometry suits the grasp being tested.
  2. Measure the force the hand imposes on the artifact, and repeat with multiple diameters or widths.
  3. Report pinch and wrap results separately, alongside the artifact dimensions; geometry affects the result.

NIST describes grasp strength as maximum force imposed on an object. ASTM WK83863 describes measuring precision pinch and power wrap grasps with split artifacts of varied geometry, but remains a work item rather than a published method (NIST; ASTM WK83863).

Measure slip and resistance to disturbances

With grasp geometry and actuation conditions held fixed, apply controlled pulls or pushes in documented directions. Record force up to slip or release, object motion, loading rate, and whether the controller actively increases grip force. This distinguishes a hand’s force on an object from its ability to maintain a grasp under an external disturbance.

A NIST draft reviews a cylindrical-object pull test example using a pull speed of 5 mm/s and recording maximum pull force. That speed belongs to the documented example, not a universal prescription for testing every hand: NIST SP 1227 draft.

If gentle handling matters, also assess grasp efficiency: whether the hand can keep an object stable while minimizing applied force as disturbances increase. NIST lists grasp efficiency as a metric for modulating grip force while minimizing effort (NIST metrics and test methods).

Measure object-handling accuracy

  1. Define repeatable tasks. Choose actions such as grasping, lifting, transporting, reorienting, placing, or rotating and translating an object within the hand. Set the desired object pose or trajectory in advance.
  2. Track actual pose independently. Use an external tracker, calibrated camera system, or another independent reference to log the object’s actual position and orientation. Do not treat the hand’s own pose estimate as ground truth.
  3. Compare desired and actual motion. Calculate position and orientation error over time and at the final target. For in-hand manipulation, report trajectory error as well as the endpoint result.
  4. Record task outcomes. Include completion, task time, drops, slips, unintended contacts, and any failed attempts along with pose error.

These measures separate object-pose estimation accuracy from the hand’s ability to execute a desired movement. NIST’s definitions and proposed metrics are set out in its grasping and manipulation methods.

Repeat the tests and present the results

Repeat each condition and report per-trial results or distributions rather than only the strongest grasp or cleanest run. State the number of trials and the setup variables listed above. Keep intrinsic-hand results separate from integrated humanoid results, where perception and arm coordination also shape performance.

A useful report makes these comparison axes visible:

  • Peak finger force and grasp force, with grasp type and object-size range.
  • Pull-out force, disturbance direction, and incidence of slip or release.
  • Object-pose error over the motion and at the target.
  • Task completion rate and time, including drops and unintended contacts.
  • Force modulation or touch sensitivity, where relevant, and repeatability across trials.

Use an instrument suited to the expected force range, loading rate, fixture geometry, data-logging needs, and calibration requirements. A digital force gauge may suit some controlled contact or pull measurements; research-grade setups may need a load cell and data-acquisition system. The cited sources do not endorse a particular gauge, capacity, accuracy, or brand. NIST provides CAD files for a split-cylinder artifact from its metrics page; fabrication, sensor integration, and calibration may still be needed.

ISO 18646-3:2021 covers service-robot manipulation performance criteria and methods including grasp size, grasp strength, slip resistance, and hinged or sliding door operation. Its scope is indoor service robots, and it does not apply to verifying or validating safety requirements. ASTM WK83863 is titled “New Test Method for Grasp-Type Robot End-Effectors: Grasp Strength Performance.” Its listed scope defines grasp strength as maximum force imposed on an object and describes pinch and wrap grasps using split artifacts of multiple geometries and sizes. Because it is a work item, do not cite it as a finalized standard. NIST’s ongoing project with ASTM F45.05 develops measurement methods, artifacts, and testbeds for robotic hands and grasping; its project page lists work on grasp strength and slip resistance, as well as a publicly available manufacturing objects and assemblies dataset: NIST project.

No universal benchmark threshold for humanoid-hand grip strength is established by these sources. A meaningful comparison therefore depends on matching grasp type, object geometry, test conditions, and measurement method, then reporting the complete results rather than a single headline force.
