1. Clear music and artwork rights before building the stream
Make a track-by-track rights plan before uploading music or starting OBS. Confirm in writing that each permission covers the uses you intend, including live streaming, the territories where the stream will be available, monetization if planned, and whether YouTube may retain an archive or replay.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party material. If you have licensed music that is managed through Content ID, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Do not treat a download link or a “royalty-free” label as proof that a track is cleared for this use. Check the actual license for YouTube live use, archive and replay rights, monetization, attribution, territory, and the process for Content ID allowlisting. Keep written permissions and confirmation of allowlisting. Apply the same care to third-party artwork, animation, and other visuals in the stream.

YouTube for Artists also recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream. Its guidance is at Going Live for Music Channels. These platform recommendations are not legal advice or a substitute for obtaining track-specific permission.
2. Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel
Before scheduling a first broadcast, confirm that your channel is eligible and live access is enabled. YouTube’s current help says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. YouTube for Artists recommends enabling live streaming at least 24 hours before the first planned broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio and follow YouTube’s channel verification and live-stream setup prompts.
- Confirm live access is available in the channel and that no restriction is preventing a broadcast.
- Allow at least 24 hours between enabling access and the planned first stream, following YouTube for Artists’ recommendation.
Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements if access is unavailable; eligibility and interface details can change.
3. Prepare the YouTube broadcast and OBS scene
Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room or OBS’s YouTube integration to prepare the broadcast and connect the encoder. Create or select the intended broadcast, enter its title, description, category, and thumbnail in YouTube, and make sure OBS is connected to that broadcast before sending video and audio.

The OBS Project’s community-maintained guide to streaming to YouTube with OBS Studio describes this general workflow. It was originally published in 2015 and may not match current button names or screen layouts exactly, so confirm labels in the current OBS and YouTube interfaces.
Build a simple radio scene
For a synthwave radio presentation, use a deliberate visual such as cleared cover art, a licensed still, or a loop you have permission to broadcast. Add channel branding or currently playing information only if it is useful to listeners. These are production choices, not YouTube requirements; any third-party visual also needs appropriate rights.
Connect the encoder to the right broadcast
In YouTube Studio, open the planned live broadcast and use its encoder connection details or the OBS YouTube integration. In OBS, select the corresponding YouTube service and broadcast or enter the stream key as prompted. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Confirm you are connecting to the intended test or public event before starting the encoder.
The supplied YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish one universally correct resolution, bitrate, or OBS setting for every channel and connection. Use the current recommendations shown for your YouTube broadcast and the settings available in your OBS version, then test the actual output rather than assuming a particular preset fits your setup.

4. Test privately before going public
YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test, and Google’s Live Streaming Checklist recommends testing the complete setup privately. Test the entire path from the playlist and OBS scene through YouTube playback before announcing the stream.
- Check that the correct audio is reaching YouTube and that volume is steady, without clipping, silence, or unintended gaps.
- Listen through transitions and verify what happens when a playlist reaches its end.
- Check the visual loop and artwork at YouTube playback size, including whether it reveals material you do not have permission to use.
- Confirm that notifications, desktop audio, or other unintended sounds are not being captured.
- Verify that OBS is sending to the intended private or unlisted test broadcast and that playback appears as expected in YouTube.
Do not make the test public merely to check whether the encoder works. A private or unlisted test lets you catch production problems before public launch, but it does not replace rights clearance or Content ID allowlisting.
5. Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual presentation
YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live experiences, and YouTube for Artists describes dual streaming in both formats through one broadcast where available. The formats differ in discovery and features: vertical streams may appear in the Shorts feed on mobile, while horizontal streams provide the familiar widescreen experience for desktop and television viewing. YouTube’s comparison also identifies differences such as clickable links and live ads. Check the currently available options in Studio before designing around a specific feature.

6. Launch, monitor, and plan for recovery
- After a successful private or unlisted test, verify the rights and allowlisting status for every track in the public playlist.
- In YouTube Studio, open the intended public broadcast and confirm its title, description, category, thumbnail, and visibility.
- Start the OBS encoder feed and check the Live Control Room for the incoming stream and any warnings before directing viewers to it.
- Monitor the broadcast and have a written restart procedure for the encoder and the YouTube broadcast. Record which device, scene, playlist, and broadcast to check if playback stops.
- Schedule operational checks of playlist playback, audio, network, and the machine running OBS. A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted platform uptime.
YouTube’s copyright guidance says Content ID claims on an archived live stream may be made after the stream ends. Decide deliberately whether to archive, then check the result in Studio. The available platform guidance does not establish a universal maximum runtime for one broadcast or a guaranteed archive-retention period. Verify current rules in YouTube Studio before depending on one uninterrupted stream or a particular replay period.
7. Troubleshoot common failures

8. Consider the operating cost and workload
An OBS approach requires a computer to run the encoder and a stable operating setup that remains available for the intended schedule. The cited guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification, so do not buy new hardware solely on the assumption that a particular spec is required. Include power, internet, monitoring, and the time needed to recover a dropped feed when deciding whether to run it yourself.
If you plan to monetize, YouTube for Artists lists features such as shopping, Supers, and ads, but availability and eligibility depend on the channel and current YouTube rules. Do not treat the availability of a feature as a revenue forecast. The same source reports that, on average, over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025; that is a broad platform audience observation, not a forecast for a new synthwave channel.
