To loop a playlist of MP4 files into YouTube Live, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio, list compatible files in an FFmpeg concat playlist, and send the loop to YouTube over RTMPS. The FFmpeg process must keep running, and a working command alone does not guarantee uninterrupted or unattended streaming.
What you need before starting
- MP4 files you have the right to stream.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can remain online and has a reliable upload connection.
- Live streaming access and a configured broadcast in YouTube Studio.
- A private YouTube stream key and the current ingest URL shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or expose it in screenshots or repositories.
YouTube Live separates the broadcast from the incoming encoder feed: configure or select the broadcast in Live Control Room, then connect FFmpeg using the ingest settings for its stream. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

Prepare an FFmpeg playlist
Check whether the MP4s are compatible
The concat demuxer joins inputs as a virtual sequential source without decoding and re-encoding them. Its files need compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Compare dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, audio sample rates, and stream presence as well; mismatches can cause errors or unreliable transitions. For incompatible sources, normalize them to a common format or use a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes. Re-encoding is more CPU-intensive but gives you control over a consistent output.
Create the playlist file
Save a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat, with this exact signature on the first line, followed by one file directive per MP4:

file '/media/radio/track-003.mp4'Replace the example paths with the real file locations. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. The concat demuxer’s safe-path setting defaults to 1 and rejects unsafe paths or directives. Prefer relative paths where practical. Use -safe 0 only if you trust the playlist and need absolute paths or paths the default safety check rejects. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for syntax and limitations.
Configure YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the broadcast you intend to use, and locate its encoder stream URL and stream key.
- Choose RTMPS when it is available, then use the exact ingest values currently shown in the Control Room. Do not copy an endpoint from an old example or expose your stream key.
- Confirm that the broadcast is ready to receive the encoder feed. Starting FFmpeg sends media; it does not create a broadcast, enable Live access, or guarantee the broadcast remains available.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for conventional encoder delivery; it carries RTMP over an SSL connection. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Start the loop with FFmpeg
For a compatible playlist, this illustrative command loops the concat input and publishes H.264 video and AAC audio. Replace the sample playlist location and RTMPS destination with your own values:

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_CURRENT_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'This is a starting example, not a universal tested configuration. Input options such as -re and -stream_loop belong before the corresponding -i. -re paces file reading in real time; -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping of the input. Check the manual for your installed FFmpeg build, since versions and option behavior can differ. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop in its command-line documentation.

Choose output settings for your source and connection
The example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, formats YouTube lists as supported, with 128 kbps audio at 44.1 kHz. That audio setting is for stereo, not a recommendation for 5.1 surround sound; YouTube’s guidance lists 48 kHz for 5.1. The example’s video bitrate is not a one-size-fits-all setting. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for your output, and make sure the upload connection can sustain the video and audio bitrate plus protocol overhead. Use a dependable connection with headroom rather than targeting its maximum measured speed.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. The example’s -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP: at 30 fps, that is approximately two seconds. Adjust the GOP to match the frame rate you actually send. YouTube also recommends testing with similar motion and audio to the intended stream. Review its current bitrate, resolution, and encoder recommendations before relying on the example settings.

Test the stream before leaving it running
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast and representative playlist files.
- Watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while FFmpeg is connected.
- Let the playlist reach its end and wrap to the beginning. Check picture changes, audio continuity, and whether the stream continues.
- Check logs and confirm behavior with a damaged or missing source file before depending on the setup unattended.
The concat demuxer advances using file durations. If audio and video stream lengths differ, gaps can occur; inaccurate duration metadata can also cause artifacts. Do not assume a playlist will transition seamlessly: inspect a complete cycle. YouTube’s guidance is to test before going live and monitor stream health.

Keep FFmpeg operating continuously
A 24/7 stream requires more than a looping command: the host must stay on, FFmpeg must remain alive, and the network and ingest must continue working. For a long-running setup, use a process supervisor or service manager configured to restart FFmpeg after an exit, retain logs somewhere persistent, and alert on process exits or loss of ingest. Assign someone to check stream health. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime from YouTube or FFmpeg.

RTMPS or HLS?

Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg rejects a playlist path: Check quoting and escaping, confirm paths exist, and use
-safe 0only for a trusted playlist that needs paths rejected by the default safe mode. - Concat reports mismatched streams or output glitches: Check that every file has compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Normalize the files or switch to a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes.
- There are pauses or artifacts at file boundaries: Compare audio and video durations and inspect duration metadata. The demuxer uses file durations to place the next input, so mismatches can create gaps or artifacts.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check the chosen bitrate against YouTube’s current settings guidance and verify that the upload link has dependable headroom for the full output, including audio and protocol overhead.
- The stream stops when the list ends: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the input’s-iand that FFmpeg is still running. Check logs for a missing or damaged source file. - FFmpeg is running but no broadcast is available: Verify Live access, broadcast status, ingest URL, and stream key in YouTube Studio. A successful encoder command does not create or schedule the broadcast.
