YouTube’s documented auto-start and auto-stop controls let you start or stop a stream from the encoder; they are not outage-recovery tools, and YouTube does not promise that a broadcast will remain resumable after a long interruption.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—do
An encoder can attempt to reconnect to YouTube when it can reach the internet again. The retry is conditional: the encoder must still be running, the network route must be working, and the encoder must be able to send a valid feed. If your ISP connection is still down, retrying cannot bring it back.

YouTube’s help pages explain how to configure encoder streams and diagnose connection trouble, but do not establish a universal outage grace period or guarantee continuity after a long interruption. Treat a returning feed as a recovery attempt, not a promise that the original live broadcast will resume unchanged.

Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder
1. Get the correct stream URL and key

Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to use.

Use the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream in your encoder. YouTube describes the key as the credential that allows the encoder to send the feed. Keep it private.

If you reset or change the stream key in YouTube Studio, replace the old key in the encoder as well. A stale key can prevent the encoder from connecting. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.
2. Decide whether the encoder should control starting and stopping
In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, check the auto-start and auto-stop options if your workflow is meant to start or stop the broadcast from the encoder. YouTube documents these as encoder-controlled start/stop settings; it does not describe them as a way to repair a lost internet connection or guarantee reconnection after an outage.

3. Choose settings your connection can sustain
Select a stream quality that is reliable on the connection available at the venue, rather than choosing the highest possible setting without testing. YouTube recommends testing with representative video and audio before the event, watching stream health during the broadcast, and using RTMPS for ingestion. Follow its current recommendations for resolution, bitrate and encoder settings at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What to do when the internet drops

Check whether the encoder is still running and whether it is producing and sending the expected feed. A running encoder alone does not prove that video is reaching YouTube.

Wait until the internet route is available again. If the encoder supports retrying its connection, it can only reconnect once it can reach YouTube. Avoid assuming that a particular retry interval or YouTube recovery window applies universally.

Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s connection status. If the encoder appears healthy but delivery remains poor, test outbound internet connectivity from the streaming location.

If the outbound connection test points to a network problem, contact your ISP. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and outbound connection, then contacting the ISP when the connection is the issue: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
YouTube’s encoder guide says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That distinction matters: stopping or resuming the encoder’s feed and restoring an unavailable internet service are separate actions. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the creator ends the stream and stops sending encoder content; this is an archive rule, not a guarantee that an interrupted broadcast can be resumed. Choose a recovery approach

A UPS can keep local equipment powered through some power interruptions, but it cannot restore an ISP connection. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not identify a particular Indian provider or guarantee a local failover outcome. For India, verify coverage and upload reliability at the actual streaming location and ask your ISP about its own outage support.
