OBS’s documented VLC playlist source can loop or shuffle a list of files; its documentation does not describe a day-of-week scheduler. You can switch playlists manually or use an automation tool you have independently verified.
Choose how the YouTube stream will be organized
YouTube distinguishes the video event viewers watch from the audio-video feed sent by an encoder. The event is called a broadcast; the encoder’s incoming feed is a stream. They are related but separate resources, and YouTube’s API documentation describes cases where one stream can serve multiple broadcasts. Google for Developers explains the distinction.

For a channel that wants one continuous destination for listeners, a continuous broadcast is the straightforward choice. Separate scheduled events may suit a channel that wants distinct event pages, but neither structure supplies a weekend playlist scheduler by itself. Prepare music and confirm your rights
Before building the playlist, use recordings you own or have permission to use for the intended livestream. Keep the license or permission records accessible. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can result in a warning, interruption, or termination. Even if you have licensed a track, YouTube says the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and resolve any required allowlisting before relying on a track.

Build weekday and weekend playback playlists in OBS
Install VLC and add a playlist source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source to appear.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream.
- Open the source’s properties and add the local music/video files in the order you want them to play. OBS describes this source as allowing a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow.
- Choose whether to enable Loop and, if desired, Shuffle. Loop repeats the list; shuffle changes playback order rather than assigning different content to different days.
For a single media file rather than a multi-file playlist, OBS’s ordinary Media Source has a Loop option. The OBS Project documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
Keep the two playlists ready
Create a weekday playlist and a separate weekend playlist, with the intended file order in each. One practical manual method is to prepare two OBS scenes, each containing its own VLC Video source and playlist, then switch scenes when the weekend begins and ends. Test that both scenes play correctly before going live. This is a scene-organization approach, not a built-in calendar trigger: OBS’s cited source documentation explains playlist, loop, and shuffle controls, but does not establish automatic day-of-week switching.

If you need the change to happen unattended, choose a scheduler or automation layer only after confirming it can trigger the required OBS action reliably on your operating system and recover from missed or delayed triggers. Otherwise, switch scenes manually. Do not assume that YouTube’s event scheduler, OBS Loop, or Shuffle will change the playlist on a calendar schedule.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Reuse a previous event’s settings or create a new event, then configure it as an encoder stream. Follow the Live Control Room prompts for the event’s visibility, title, and scheduling details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screenshot or overlay, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming signal and preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- When the preview is correct, select the control to go live in Live Control Room if the event requires it. Check the public watch page as well as the studio preview.
The exact controls can change over time; use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions if a label differs in your account.

Test the stream and plan for long runtimes
Before committing to a 24/7 schedule, run a test with the actual playlist, scene switch, audio level, and internet connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends previewing the stream, checking accessibility, monitoring audio and video quality, and testing encoder failover where applicable. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Confirm that the music is audible without clipping and that the video or visual scene is present.
- Check the public watch page from another device or browser to confirm viewers can access the event.
- Test the manual scene change or automation trigger before leaving the stream unattended.
- Decide who will monitor local playback and the YouTube status, and what they will do if the feed stops.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise an indefinitely available archive for a single unbroken 24/7 broadcast. If you need recordings or distinct archives, plan how you will handle event length and verify current YouTube behavior for your setup.

Troubleshooting common problems
