Test the picture and sound before launch, monitor stream health, and keep a separate recording if you need a complete replay: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
1. Clear the rights to your snow and storm audio
Use original footage and sound where possible. For any third-party material, check the actual license before building the stream. It should expressly permit continuous livestreaming or broadcast, and should cover monetization if you plan to monetize, the territories where viewers may watch, and any saved replay or video-on-demand use you want.

Keep a copy of the license, permission, and asset details. “Royalty-free” by itself does not establish that all of these uses are allowed. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Even when you have a license, a broadcast may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the rights holder about its Content ID process before going live.

2. Build and inspect a seamless loop
Combine the snowstorm video and ambience audio in your editing project or encoder workflow. Aim for a restrained scene that can repeat without drawing attention to the loop point. Inspect the end-to-start transition rather than assuming a clip will repeat cleanly.

- Look for visible jumps, abrupt changes in snowfall, black frames, or a change in exposure at the seam.
- Listen for silence, clicks, sudden level shifts, or a change in the character of the wind or snow sound.
- Test the full video-and-audio combination, not just the video file. Confirm that audio does not drift or stop while the picture continues.
- Keep the source files and project so you can revise a distracting transition without rebuilding the whole stream.
These are practical production checks for continuity; they are not guarantees of a particular audience or sleep outcome.
3. Choose how the stream will run
Local encoder: OBS
OBS is a free, open-source desktop encoder. With a local setup, your computer, OBS, power, and network connection must remain available for the whole broadcast. You have direct control over the scene and encoding, but you are also responsible for keeping the machine and connection running and responding to interruptions. See OBS’s official streaming guide.

YouTube requires a verified channel that has not been restricted from livestreaming within the previous 90 days. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. Check the channel’s eligibility and live-stream status in YouTube Studio rather than waiting until launch day. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance.

5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding server and key fields in OBS. Use the current YouTube encoder setup instructions if the field labels differ in your OBS version.
- Treat the stream key like a password: it identifies where your encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not publish or share it. Reset it in YouTube if you think it has been exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s preview.
- Check the preview and stream health, then start the broadcast in the Live Control Room. Confirm the public watch page is accessible as intended.
Connecting the encoder and starting the public broadcast are separate parts of the workflow. Use YouTube’s current encoder livestream setup guidance for the Live Control Room steps.
6. Set video quality to match your connection
Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS configurations, supported codecs, and bitrate ranges by resolution. Do not choose a higher resolution simply because it is available: the connection must sustain the selected bitrate throughout a continuous broadcast. Test the exact settings you plan to use before launch.

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. For example, a stream set to a particular bitrate needs an outbound connection with capacity beyond that figure, not merely equal to it. Check the actual connection available to the streaming computer and leave room for normal variation. YouTube also recommends a reliable network and monitoring stream health. An Ethernet cable is an optional way to connect a computer to a wired network, not a requirement or a guarantee against outages. See YouTube’s network and encoder guidance.

7. Test, launch, and monitor
- Run a test using the final video, audio, encoder settings, and network connection.
- Check the YouTube preview for picture continuity and confirm that the audio is present at a consistent level.
- Open the watch page from a viewer’s perspective and confirm its title, visibility, and playback are as intended.
- If you need a full replay, test a local recording and confirm that the file contains both picture and sound.
- During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream health and respond to warnings or interruptions. Do not assume that a successful preview means the connection will remain healthy indefinitely.
8. Plan for a 24/7 replay separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s archive as its only complete recording. If a full replay matters, make and verify a separate local recording. Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not accept the encoder feed: Confirm that the stream URL and key in OBS match the selected Live Control Room stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether a livestream restriction applies. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- Video buffers or stream health degrades: Check the actual outbound connection and bitrate, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test a lower sustainable quality if the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen settings.
- The loop has a distracting jump or audio gap: Inspect the clip’s end-to-start seam and revise the source or transition. Re-test the complete combination before restarting the broadcast.
- A licensed track or video triggers an interruption: Review the license and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Do not depend on YouTube to capture streams exceeding 12 hours. Use a separate recording for a complete replay.
