How to Build a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Radio Playlist That Shuffles Without Repeating Tracks

For a simple 24/7 lofi broadcast, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist enabled, then send the output to YouTube Live. That randomizes the playlist order, but OBS does not document a guarantee that it will reshuffle after every loop or prevent a track from repeating before the rest of your library plays. If “no repeats until every track has played” is a firm requirement, use a history-aware playlist scheduler that records played tracks; verify that it preserves its history and recovers unattended before relying on it.

Choose the shuffle behavior you actually need

Approach What it does Repeat behavior Best fit
OBS VLC Video source with shuffle and loop Randomizes the order of playlist files and loops the list. A shuffled order can recur on later loops. Strict cross-cycle de-duplication is not established. Background-radio variety without a strict no-repeat rule.
History-aware playlist scheduler Tracks stable IDs for played files and selects from the unplayed pool. Can avoid repeats until the eligible pool is exhausted if implemented correctly and its state is retained. A strict “every track once before any repeats” requirement.

For a scheduler, check whether it changes the order each cycle, prevents a song from returning before the library is exhausted, supports your file formats and transitions, survives an OBS or computer restart, and can run unattended. No particular scheduler is established here as a verified choice.

Prepare music and visuals you have the right to stream

Use audio and video files cleared for livestream use. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say that “you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions.

Do not assume a track marked “royalty free,” or licensed for ordinary videos, is automatically cleared for continuous livestreaming. Confirm that the license covers your use. YouTube warns that even licensed third-party content may interrupt a live stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting when applicable; see YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Build a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Create a scene: In OBS Studio, add a scene for your radio visuals. Add a VLC Video source and select the local media files for the playlist. OBS documents this as the playlist-capable source; its built-in Media Source is available for individual files.
  2. Install VLC if needed: The VLC Video source requires VLC installed. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
  3. Set the playlist behavior: Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the source runs out of files. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the media-file order.
  4. Check the output: Preview the assets and listen to audio levels. Confirm the expected visuals, track transitions and loop behavior before broadcasting.

What OBS shuffle does—and does not—promise

OBS’s VLC-source implementation shuffles the file list when source settings are applied. That supports a randomized order, but it does not establish that a fresh order is drawn at every track boundary or loop, nor that a track cannot repeat across loop boundaries. The OBS VLC Video source code is the basis for this distinction. An OBS forum post describes a user seeing the same shuffled order on later loops, but that is an anecdotal report, not a universal guarantee: the forum discussion.

If variety is enough, use a substantial library and shuffle it. You can also rebuild or reorder the playlist between planned broadcast sessions. If repeats are prohibited until the entire library has played, use a scheduler with stable track IDs and a played-history set: choose only unplayed IDs, then reset the history after the eligible pool is exhausted. Test both unattended operation and history recovery after a restart; a scheduler that forgets its state can repeat tracks.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Check channel eligibility: YouTube says live streaming requires an eligible channel. Its getting-started guidance describes a verified channel without a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio; eligibility can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
  2. Create or select an encoder stream: Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream for an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Enter the connection details in OBS: Open OBS streaming settings, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key and URL as prompted. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
  4. Preview before going live: Start OBS’s stream output and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check picture and sound, then go live from YouTube Studio when the preview is correct.
  5. Run a shakedown: Before a public 24/7 broadcast, test privately or unlisted. Confirm that tracks advance, the playlist loops, audio stays audible, the computer and network remain stable, and Studio reports the incoming stream as healthy. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder, checking the preview and monitoring stream quality: YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Keep the broadcast running—and plan for failure

A looping playlist is not a resilient broadcast by itself: OBS must keep producing and sending the signal, and network disruption can break a stream. Use a reliable connection with upload bandwidth headroom, test the full setup, and monitor YouTube’s stream-quality indicators. Do not promise uninterrupted availability unless the whole system and its recovery plan have been tested. YouTube’s preparation and monitoring guidance is at YouTube Help.

Archive and rewind are different from being live

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The help page gives no publication year for these limits; check it again before planning around them: YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance. If a replay matters, record locally as a backup. Size any storage for the recording bitrate and duration rather than assuming the stream archive will be complete.
