MediaTailor assembles playback manifests; it does not transcode or deliver the underlying media segments. Those remain at your origin and are fetched from there by viewers’ playback path.
How MediaTailor channel assembly works
MediaTailor channel assembly composes a live, sliding playback manifest from VOD assets and, if configured, live sources. The manifest references media segments at the origin; MediaTailor is not the storage origin and does not itself serve those segments. Your origin and delivery path must therefore remain accessible to the player. See AWS’s channel assembly overview.

The configuration has four main parts: a source location for the origin, VOD sources for individual content items, package configurations that describe manifests and source groups, and channel outputs that expose the corresponding format. The schedule determines which programs play and in what order.
Prepare compatible VOD assets
Before creating sources, confirm that your origin hosts accessible manifests and their media segments. AWS lists Amazon S3, web servers, CDNs such as CloudFront, and packaging origins such as AWS Elemental MediaPackage as possible source-location origins. Your specific access and authentication setup depends on the origin; AWS documents optional SigV4 authentication for S3. See Working with source locations.

- Choose the manifest format and player output you need: AWS documents HLS and DASH for this workflow.
- Check that sources grouped under a package configuration have the same manifest-derived duration and the same number of child streams.
- Per-title or automated ABR encoding can produce incompatible durations or stream counts. AWS documents those configurations as unsupported when they violate the source requirements.
- AWS recommends an encoding template with a minimum segment length of one second.
These compatibility requirements affect whether a break or transition can be composed correctly, so validate the manifests before building a schedule. Details are in AWS’s VOD source requirements.
Create the source location and VOD sources
- Create a source location. In the MediaTailor console, create a source location, give it a name, and enter the HTTP(S) base URL for the origin. Set source authentication if the origin requires it.
- Add each content item as a VOD source. Under the source location, register each asset and provide the relative path to its manifest.
- Add a package configuration for each needed format. Specify the format, manifest location, and source group. The source group is the mapping used when configuring channel outputs.
- Repeat for the assets and formats you intend to schedule. Keep source packaging compatible within each package configuration.
A VOD source represents one content item; its package configuration describes the manifest and group it can supply. Consult Working with VOD sources and Working with source locations for the service’s configuration model.

Create a channel and configure its outputs
- Create a channel in the MediaTailor console and select loop playback mode for a repeating VOD lineup, as in AWS’s getting-started workflow.
- Add an output for each source group you need. The output format should match the package configuration and the playback format your clients consume.
- Save the channel configuration before adding scheduled programs.
Loop mode is the documented getting-started pattern for a continuously repeating lineup. Channel outputs correspond to package source groups; they do not create or store the media. Follow Working with channels and the getting-started guide for the console workflow.
Build the program schedule
Add programs to the channel schedule, selecting the source location and VOD source for each item and arranging programs in the desired order. The schedule is the linear lineup. AWS also supports adding live sources, so a channel can combine scheduled VOD programming with live content rather than only repeat a VOD loop.

Scheduling behavior depends on the channel configuration. AWS’s advanced console guidance distinguishes relative transitions for VOD programs from absolute wall-clock transitions in eligible linear-channel configurations. Check the current console options for your channel rather than assuming all schedules support the same timing model. Optional: configure ad breaks
For VOD programs, the documented ad-break workflow uses a slate source and an offset. The slate’s duration determines the break length. The offset must be shorter than the program and align with segment boundaries across all tracks; otherwise, the break may be skipped. Ad personalization can be handled through MediaTailor ad insertion or another SSAI service, but configuring a break does not guarantee that ad inventory will fill it or generate revenue.

Start the channel and validate playback
- Start the channel in the MediaTailor console.
- Open the channel playback URL, as shown in AWS’s getting-started tutorial.
- Test each configured output through the actual player and delivery path intended for viewers. Check that both manifests and referenced segments are reachable and that transitions between scheduled items play as expected.
AWS documents the output workflow, but does not establish one universal player-compatibility matrix. Validate the formats against your own clients and origin setup. The getting-started tutorial provides the baseline start-and-playback check.

Common setup problems and what to check
- A source will not work with other assets in its package configuration: compare manifest-derived durations and child-stream counts. Make the sources compatible or separate them into suitable package configurations.
- A scheduled slate break is skipped: verify that the offset is less than the program duration and aligns to segment boundaries on every track.
- The manifest opens but playback fails: because MediaTailor references segments at the origin, verify that the player’s delivery path can also reach those segment URLs.
- A format does not play in a target client: verify that the channel output matches the package format and test that HLS or DASH output in the specific client; no universal compatibility guarantee is established.
- Program timing differs from expectations: check whether the channel uses relative VOD sequencing or an eligible wall-clock scheduling configuration, and confirm the available console settings.
Cost to account for
AWS’s getting-started tutorial gives an estimated active-channel fee of $0.10 per hour and says inactive channels are not charged. This is a tutorial estimate returned in 2026, not a guaranteed current rate. Verify the live AWS pricing page and the applicable region before budgeting; the tutorial estimate alone does not establish other costs associated with your deployment.
