How Live Streaming Is Changing Media—and What It Means for Creators

Live streaming gives creators new routes to audience and revenue, while making platform dependence, uneven reach and rights management more important.

Live streaming is changing media by making real-time events and creator communities part of how people discover, watch, and discuss entertainment. For creators, that creates new ways to reach viewers and earn money—but not a reliable promise of income. The practical opportunity is to build a format people want to join, diversify revenue and discovery, and understand the risks of platform dependence and copyright.

How live streaming is changing media

Events compete for attention in real time

A live event gives people a reason to tune in at a particular moment and share the experience with others. That can mean sports, gaming, or creator conversations; the draw is not simply that video is playing, but that viewers can watch and respond as something unfolds.

Amagi’s 2025 survey found that 67% of surveyed U.S. viewers watch live events on free or paid streaming platforms, and 70% said they watch live content daily or weekly. In that survey, 47% said a free live event could encourage them to try a paid service. These are reported survey findings, not a forecast that any specific live stream will attract viewers or convert them into subscribers. Amagi’s announcement also said sports accounted for 84% of live events managed by Amagi in Q1 2025; that describes Amagi’s own managed events, not the entire streaming or FAST market.

Creators increasingly act as discovery intermediaries

People can discover a game, product, or entertainment through a creator they follow rather than through a publisher or broadcaster’s channel. Deloitte’s 2024 Digital Media Trends analysis found that 63% of surveyed Gen Z gamers discovered new games through social creators and live-streamers, while 56% said a favorite creator’s promotion made them more likely to trust a game publisher. Those figures concern surveyed Gen Z gamers and games; they should not be treated as a measure of all audiences or categories. Deloitte’s 2024 analysis illustrates why a creator’s relationship with an audience can matter to media companies seeking discovery and trust.

Traditional media is adapting distribution and talent strategies

Media companies are not only competing with creator platforms; some are using them as distribution channels and working with creator talent. Ofcom’s 2025 account of the UK market describes broadcasters putting full-length and digital-first programming on YouTube, including genre channels, as well as subscription services working with prominent creators on larger productions. These are UK examples, not evidence that every broadcaster or creator can expect the same deal. Ofcom’s media reports describe a two-way movement: established companies seek audiences on digital platforms, while some creators move into larger productions and new distribution.

Live viewing spans different services and categories

Stream Hatchet reported 32.5 billion hours watched across the live-streaming activity it measured in 2024, up 12% year over year. In its 2024 report, Twitch accounted for 61% of the measured share, YouTube Gaming 22.9%, and Kick 5.7%. These shares depend on Stream Hatchet’s measurement and category definitions; they do not represent every kind of live video. The same report counted 16 million subscriptions purchased monthly on Twitch in 2024. That is a platform-level activity measure, not an estimate of typical creator earnings. Stream Hatchet’s report is useful for understanding measured scale, but market growth alone says little about an individual channel’s prospects.

What live streaming means for creators

It is a format, not a business model by itself

A livestream can support discovery, interaction, and community, but it does not automatically produce income. Creators can combine live shows with recorded videos, clips, posts, or other formats, subject to each platform’s rules and the rights they hold. A broader publishing plan can reduce reliance on one format or discovery route, though it takes time and does not guarantee reach.

In a March 2024 Pollfish survey of 1,500 creators who were already monetizing their work, Epidemic Sound reported that 49.5% used live streaming as a monetization method. In the same survey, 48.3% reported advertising revenue share, 44% sponsorships, and 42.6% paid subscriptions. Respondents could use multiple methods, so these figures describe an overlapping portfolio in that sample—not mutually exclusive choices or a universal creator blueprint. Epidemic Sound’s report provides a snapshot of monetizing creators surveyed, not all people who publish content.

Choose revenue methods to fit the format and audience

Potential income sources include platform advertising, paid subscriptions or memberships, viewer gifts, sponsorships, and other paid work. Each asks something different of a creator: ads depend on platform terms and audience activity; recurring subscriptions call for benefits the creator can consistently deliver; sponsorships require a suitable partner and audience; gifts depend on viewers choosing to contribute. Platform eligibility, availability, and terms vary by service and country and can change. The figures above show reported use, not comparable payout rates or guaranteed earnings.

Gifting can be part of participation as well as payment. In 2025, Ipsos and TikTok reported that 85% of surveyed social media users were aware of livestream gifting; among TikTok LIVE users who had activated gifts, 35% said appreciation was their main reason. TikTok also estimated that more than 60,000 U.S. creators received rewards above the median part-time monthly income in 2025. The latter is a platform estimate reported by Ipsos, not an independently audited outcome or a typical income figure. Ipsos’s report describes reported motivations and platform estimates, not a promise that gifting will become material income for a particular creator.

Design participation instead of relying on stream length

Give viewers meaningful ways to take part: questions, discussion prompts, shared decisions, or clearly explained community benefits can make a live format feel distinct from a recording. Gifts or subscriptions may suit some audiences, but they are not proof of loyalty and should not be treated as an income target every stream must meet. Choose interactions you can sustain and that fit the subject.

Expect reach and income to be uneven

In Epidemic Sound’s survey, 58.3% of respondents reported recent monetization difficulties. Among the reported challenges, 53.6% cited limited reach or audience, 44.8% inconsistent income, 39.3% difficulty finding brand partners, and 37.6% platform algorithm changes. These percentages refer to that survey’s respondents and challenge reporting, not the likelihood any one creator will face a particular problem. They are a useful counterweight to headline growth figures: a larger market can coexist with uncertain discovery and unstable earnings.

  • Build more than one discovery route where practical, and keep useful audience relationships beyond a single platform’s recommendation feed.
  • Do not budget around a viral moment, a sponsorship, or recurring viewer contributions until they are actually dependable.
  • Choose revenue sources that fit what your audience values and what you can deliver repeatedly.

Treat creator relationships as an opportunity, not a typical outcome

A community can help a creator build recognition, promote work, and become relevant to a publisher or production partner. Deloitte’s gaming findings show why creators may influence discovery and trust in that audience segment; Ofcom documents UK examples of creator work entering larger productions. Neither source establishes that brand partnerships or subscription-service commissions are routine, or what creators typically earn from them.

How to make creator work more resilient

Plan for platform dependence

Platforms control discovery systems, monetization features, and service terms. A sudden change in recommendations or eligibility can affect reach or income, as surveyed creators reported. Keep a publishing plan that can adapt, make it easy for viewers to find your other public channels, and avoid relying on a single revenue stream where alternatives suit your work. Do not assume that a particular platform has better payouts or eligibility for you: the sources cited here do not provide a current, apples-to-apples comparison of fees, payout rates, eligibility thresholds, and audiences across Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Kick.

Clear music and other rights before going live

Copyright problems can lead to muted audio, removed content, or demonetization. Epidemic Sound’s surveyed creators reported such outcomes, but that does not establish that any one music service is required or universally clears every use. Use music and other material only when you have the necessary rights for the platform, territory, and intended use, and check the relevant platform’s current terms before streaming or republishing a recording. A license for one use or service should not be assumed to cover another.

Make production choices for your actual format

The evidence here does not show that buying more equipment increases reach or earnings. Start with the needs of the stream: intelligible audio for spoken content, a stable connection, and a setup you can operate consistently. Add equipment only to address a real limitation in your room, device compatibility, workflow, or budget; it is not a substitute for a distinctive format or audience development.

Keeping a YouTube channel live while you are away

A creator who wants a pre-recorded video or playlist to run continuously has a different production problem from hosting a live show. A do-it-yourself workflow can use a computer or a cloud service, but the two approaches have different operational demands. A continuous stream is still subject to YouTube’s current terms, copyright rules, and channel policies. Replaying the same material does not by itself make it original or eligible for monetization; make sure you have rights to the video and audio and that the channel adds value consistent with platform rules.

Use a computer-based setup when you want to manage it yourself

  1. Prepare the source. Use a recording or playlist you have the rights to stream. Check that the source’s resolution, frame rate, and audio are suitable for your intended output. Make a short test before committing to a long run.
  2. Enable live streaming on YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and complete any channel verification or live-streaming activation steps YouTube requires. Activation availability and requirements can vary; check the current YouTube interface and help pages.
  3. Set up the stream in your streaming software. In the software’s stream settings, select YouTube and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio, or connect the account through the software if that option is available. Treat a stream key as a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
  4. Match output settings to your source and connection. Select a resolution and frame rate the source can sustain. YouTube’s encoder recommendations commonly specify a keyframe interval of two seconds and use bitrate ranges that vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the current YouTube recommended encoder settings rather than copying a bitrate blindly; excessive bitrate can cause dropped frames, while too little can reduce image quality.
  5. Configure the event and check the preview. Add a clear title and audience setting, verify the correct stream key and ingest status, and inspect both video and audio in YouTube Studio before starting. Confirm that the source loops or advances as intended and that the event is public, unlisted, or private as planned.
  6. Keep the full setup running. The computer, playback software, encoder, and internet connection all need to remain available for the stream to continue. Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and have a recovery plan for software crashes, power loss, or an interrupted connection.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. It plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live production service.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell creators

The figures in this article come from different kinds of evidence: Stream Hatchet’s measured platform activity, surveys by Epidemic Sound, Deloitte, Amagi, and Ipsos/TikTok, and Ofcom’s account of the UK media market. Their populations, geographies, methods, and categories differ, so their percentages should not be combined into a single measure of the creator economy. Some sources are produced by companies with commercial interests in streaming, analytics, or creator services; attribution and scope matter.

They support a clear conclusion about the direction of media: real-time viewing and creator communities have become meaningful parts of discovery, distribution, and monetization. They do not establish that streaming reliably produces sustainable income for individual creators, that one platform is best for everyone, or that buying equipment causes growth.
