There is no universally proven tank counter to Roadhog. Your best response is to deny him an easy Hook, avoid isolated approaches, and coordinate pressure after he uses it. Choose a tank for the map and your team’s needs—not a supposed counter ranking: the official sources cited here provide Roadhog’s mechanics and balance changes, but no counter-pick win rates.
What makes Roadhog dangerous—and what creates an opening
Blizzard describes Roadhog’s Scrap Gun as a short-range spread weapon, with a medium-range secondary projectile that explodes into its primary fire. Chain Hook pulls a targeted enemy to Roadhog; Take a Breather heals him and reduces damage taken; Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of him. Blizzard’s Roadhog hero page outlines those abilities.

Recent patch notes add important context. In June 2026, Blizzard said Take a Breather generates poison gas around Roadhog that damages nearby enemies. That makes crowding him during the ability risky. The same notes say Chain Hook can hit a teammate and pull Roadhog to that teammate, so allies near him should account for that interaction. Hook is also displacement: Blizzard’s February 2026 notes describe it as an effect that moves a target, interrupts channeled abilities, and cannot be cleansed. February 2026 patch notes
Which tank should you pick?
Pick for the matchup your team actually faces. The official material does not establish a single best tank against Roadhog, so use these questions to compare your available choices rather than relying on an unverified tier list.
- Can your team make Hook difficult? Consider how the tank and team can use cover, barriers, or other defensive tools to break a clear Hook lane. Do not assume any one tool blocks every Hook in every situation.
- What happens if you are pulled? Since Hook displaces its target and interrupts channeled abilities, consider whether your tank can survive, escape, or still contribute after being pulled.
- Can you pressure him without walking into his preferred range? Scrap Gun’s primary fire is described as short-range, while Breather heals Roadhog and reduces damage taken. Look for ways to contribute pressure without making a predictable close approach.
- Will the pick still help your team elsewhere? Weigh space control, objective presence, and protection for allies on the specific map and in the current mode.
Map geometry, mode, team composition, execution, and current balance can all change the right choice. Blizzard’s March 2026 notes increased Scrap Gun damage per pellet to 7, describing the change as intended to improve Hook-combo consistency and overall damage; that is dated balance context, not a guarantee that every mode or current client setting uses identical values. How to avoid Hook and respond to it
Before Hook: break the easy lane
- Use corners and hard cover to interrupt clear sightlines.
- Avoid standing alone in an exposed lane or repeatedly peeking from the same spot.
- Keep enough distance to avoid handing Roadhog a simple close-range follow-up.
These are practical ways to reduce predictable exposure to a pull and to Scrap Gun’s short-range primary fire, not a guarantee that Hook cannot reach you.
While Hook is available: protect vulnerable actions
Avoid committing to a channeled ability where Roadhog can pull and interrupt you. Hook’s displacement cannot be cleansed, according to Blizzard’s February 2026 notes; plan around preventing or surviving the pull rather than expecting a cleanse to undo it.
After Hook is used or misses: contest together
Call that Hook has been spent and coordinate a brief push or pressure attempt if the fight state allows. April 2026 notes list an 8-second cooldown, but that number does not mean the whole interval is safe: Roadhog can still use Scrap Gun and Breather, and other enemies may threaten the approach.

When Roadhog uses Take a Breather: avoid the gas
When practical, pressure or reposition as a group, but do not crowd Roadhog. Blizzard’s June 2026 notes say Breather generates damaging poison gas around him, while his hero page describes the ability as healing him and reducing damage taken.
When Whole Hog is active: get out of its line
Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of Roadhog. Move out of the affected direction or use available cover and defensive resources. The official ability description does not establish an exact range or duration here, so do not rely on an assumed one.
A team plan for fighting Roadhog
- Call Hook status before committing. Identify whether Hook is available and warn teammates before taking a narrow or exposed route.
- Reduce isolated targets. Use cover and spacing so a pull is less likely to leave one player exposed to follow-up damage or draw nearby teammates into danger.
- Coordinate pressure after Hook is spent. Move together if the opening is favorable instead of sending players in one at a time; account for Breather, Scrap Gun, and the rest of the enemy team.
- Track Breather and Whole Hog. Adjust your distance when Breather’s poison gas matters, and respond to Whole Hog’s frontal damage and knockback.
- Consider bans only where the mode supports them. Blizzard’s Season 16 announcement described Competitive Play Hero Bans as a team vote to remove up to four heroes, up to two per team and no more than two per role. Discuss whether banning Roadhog—or a key hero in your own plan—makes sense, and check the current in-client rules because bans are mode-specific and may change. Season 16 announcement
How to read older Roadhog advice
Roadhog’s abilities and tuning have changed over time. Blizzard’s November 14, 2023 developer comments said the rework aimed to improve his frontline presence as a tank and reduce frustration with how consistently deadly his Hook combo had been. The November 2023 notes also describe changes to Breather and the introduction of Pig Pen, followed by a November 16 adjustment. Likewise, Blizzard’s February 2025 notes documented the introduction of hero perks and Roadhog perks at that time. April 2026 notes later replaced Invigorate with Hogdrogen Exposure, so check the live client for current perk names and choices before building a perk-specific plan. An August 29, 2025 hotfix restored classic Scrap Gun primary and secondary fire and adjusted reload time, pellet damage, secondary-fire critical hits, and Hook impact damage. Later notes take precedence where values differ. August 2025 hotfix Blizzard’s patch index reviewed through September 17, 2026 lists no Roadhog change in that hotfix section, but that does not rule out later, mode-specific, or unlisted changes.
