Exchange Xbox gamertags, then invite or join through the Xbox interface. The game supports cross-play between Xbox and PC players, with one host and up to three guests.
How to start a co-op session
- Sign in to an Xbox account. Every player needs an Xbox account, including players on PC.
- Enable Multiplayer. Open the game’s Settings and make sure Multiplayer is turned on.
- Exchange Xbox gamertags. Use these to find and connect with each other.
- Invite or join. On PC, press Windows + G to open Xbox Game Bar, then use it to invite a friend or join their session. The official FAQ describes this method for connecting across different stores and consoles.
Cross-play, player count, and what guests can do
State of Decay 2 supports cross-play for players using Xbox accounts, so PC and Xbox friends can play together even when they own the game through different storefronts. A session has one host and up to three guests, for four players total.

Guests visit the host’s game rather than entering a persistent shared world. While visiting, each guest can still access their own community’s Supply Locker. The official sources do not establish that all players share campaign progression or that a host’s world remains available while the host is offline.

Host and guest connection limits
Multiplayer uses a peer-to-peer connection, so session quality depends on the host’s internet connection. Guests are also tethered to the host and cannot stray too far away. As Undead Labs explains, “a tether system keeps players from straying too far from the host.”

Does co-op require Xbox Game Pass?
For online multiplayer on Xbox consoles, Microsoft lists Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate as required; the subscription is sold separately. The listed console subscription requirement should not be taken to mean PC players need Game Pass to play online. Check Microsoft’s current terms for the latest subscription details.
If you can’t connect to a friend
- Check Xbox service status.
- Confirm Multiplayer is enabled in the game’s Settings.
- Make sure each player is signed in to an Xbox account.
- If a PC player cannot host, update Gaming Services through the Microsoft Store and restart the PC.
Undead Labs says State of Decay 2 received its final content update in October 2024 and that support ticket intake is closed. Its FAQ points players to community channels for additional help.

Supported platforms
Microsoft lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as supported platforms and labels the feature “Xbox cross-platform co-op.” The cited official sources do not identify a PlayStation version of State of Decay 2.
