Tell the assistant exactly what is wrong, correct or delete the saved memory using the service’s controls, and check the chat, file, or connected app that may have supplied the error. Then test the correction in a new conversation. A memory entry and the source it came from can be separate, so changing one does not always remove the other.
How do I correct an AI assistant’s memory?
- Name the error precisely. State the incorrect detail and the correct version, adding a date or context if that helps distinguish them.
- Ask what the assistant remembers. This may help you identify a saved entry or a detail retrieved from other context, but its reply is a clue—not proof that it has shown you every stored source.
- Use the assistant’s memory controls. Edit or remove the incorrect entry if the service offers that option. Current instructions vary, so use the help page for the service and account you have.
- Check where the detail came from. Review relevant chats, files, and connected apps. If you want the information fully removed, address both the memory and its source where the provider requires it.
- Test the change later. Start a new conversation and see whether the assistant uses the corrected detail. If the old version returns, inspect the memory controls and possible sources again.
You can try wording such as: “That detail is wrong. Please update your memory: [correct detail]. Do not use [incorrect detail]. Tell me where I can review or remove this saved item.” This is a suggested prompt, not a vendor-prescribed command; asking conversationally may not change every underlying record or source.

Why does my AI keep remembering this wrong?
The assistant may be using more than one kind of information. OpenAI, for example, distinguishes saved memories from personalization based on past chats. An incorrect saved entry can persist separately from the conversation where the detail first appeared. A chat, file, or connected app might also continue to supply the wrong information after you change a memory entry.
Start by treating the assistant’s response about what it remembers as a lead. Check the service’s memory controls, then inspect plausible source material. If the error appears in a source as well as a saved memory, correct or remove both as appropriate.

How do I make ChatGPT forget something incorrect?
OpenAI says users can tell ChatGPT that a remembered detail is incorrect or outdated, and can edit a memory summary or saved memory when those controls are available. Its Help Center explains the distinction between asking ChatGPT not to mention a detail and deleting the information: suppressing future references does not remove the original chat, file, email, or other source. See Memory FAQ and Memory in ChatGPT for current instructions.
For full removal, OpenAI says you may need to address every place the information appears, including the memory summary, saved memories, chats, files, and connected apps. Deleting a chat alone may not remove a separate saved memory. Check the current controls and guidance for your account before assuming one action has cleared every copy.

OpenAI also distinguishes saved memories from using chat history to personalize later conversations. Its documentation says information remembered through past-chat reference is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days after that feature is turned off. This is a retention detail for that feature, not a general deletion guarantee for all information; consult OpenAI’s explanation of memory and new controls for the applicable scope.

Will deleting the chat remove what it remembers?
Not necessarily. OpenAI’s documentation says a saved memory may remain after you delete the chat where the information appeared; full removal may require deleting both the memory and the source. The reverse matters too: removing a saved memory does not necessarily remove a chat, file, or connected-app source that could provide the detail again.
Identify what you want to remove before acting: the saved memory, its source, or both. Then verify by checking the memory controls and trying a later conversation.
How can I verify that the correction worked?
- Check the service’s memory controls to see whether the entry now reflects the correct detail or has been removed.
- Start a separate conversation and ask a neutral question that would reveal whether the assistant is still using the mistaken detail.
- If the mistake appears again, look for the old version in relevant chats, files, or connected apps, as well as in saved memory.
A successful test in one conversation is useful evidence, not proof that every source has been corrected. Keep the correction scoped to the specific service and information you changed.
