Before correcting a viral accusation, verify both the video’s source and the specific claim made about the person. Then publish a concise, evidence-based correction where the same audience can see it, avoid amplifying the accusation, and report the post separately if it appears to break platform rules. A short clip may show an event without proving who was involved, why it happened, or what the caption claims.
Start by separating what the video shows from what it claims
A viral video is not self-authenticating evidence. Genuine footage can be old, edited, incomplete, or paired with a false identity, date, location, or explanation. YouTube’s misinformation policy, for example, includes certain misattributed video among its examples, while the UK House of Commons Library advises tracing a source and checking context (House of Commons Library guidance; YouTube misinformation policy).

Write down the accusation as a checkable factual claim. Then distinguish it from what is directly visible. A clip might establish that a person was present or that an action occurred, but not necessarily the person’s identity, motive, or the broader allegation. Fact-checking guidance recommends tracing claims to their original sources and comparing accounts rather than treating repetition as confirmation (UK government fact-checking guidance).
Verify the video’s source and context
Look for the earliest available upload and determine, where possible, who recorded or published it and how they relate to the event. Search distinctive phrases, signs, uniforms, landmarks, watermarks, or other visible details. Compare the viral excerpt with longer footage and material from the time of the event. Reverse image search services such as TinEye, Bing, Google, and InVID may help find earlier appearances, but a match is a lead—not proof that a clip is authentic or correctly described.

- When and where was the footage recorded, and does that fit the accusation?
- Is it complete, or have cuts, captions, subtitles, or overdubbing changed its meaning?
- Is the person identified correctly?
- Which details are directly visible, and which are interpretation?
Visual oddities alone do not establish that footage is fake or AI-generated. The House of Commons Library cautions that visual signs cannot always settle authenticity, particularly as image and video-generation tools improve. State uncertainty when the available evidence leaves questions open.
Check the accusation against independent evidence
Identify what evidence would support or disprove the allegation. Look for original documents, full-length footage, statements from people directly involved, and reliable reporting that explains its sourcing. Compare accounts for proximity to the event, independence, date and context, and transparency about how the information was obtained. Several outlets repeating the same unverified post are not necessarily independent confirmation.
A simple working record can keep your correction within the evidence: list the exact claim, evidence supporting it, contrary evidence, what remains unknown, and each source’s date. If the evidence only shows that the clip does not prove an allegation, say that; do not label the allegation false unless the evidence supports that stronger conclusion.
Write a specific correction without amplifying the accusation
State what was wrong, what the evidence supports instead, and what remains unestablished. Link to reliable evidence, preferably an original or primary source. Avoid repeating inflammatory wording, speculating about the poster’s intentions, or turning a correction into a counter-accusation.

Correction: The caption identifies [brief description of the claim]. The available evidence shows [specific, supported correction]. [Source and date.] The clip does not establish [remaining unknown].
Use only statements you can substantiate. If the evidence is incomplete, say “the claim is unverified” or “the clip does not establish the claim” rather than presenting an unproven alternative as fact. PBS’s standards for its own social-media practice say to correct errors promptly, explain what was wrong, and take care not to spread the original inaccuracy (PBS Standards on Accuracy).

If the original publisher can be contacted, ask them to update or contextualize the post and provide the evidence. If you post a correction yourself, choose a place where viewers of the original are likely to encounter it. Make the correction clear and easy to find, but do not unnecessarily embed, quote-post, or link to the harmful accusation. Government of Canada guidance recommends sharing accurate, sourced information without needing to link to the original post (Government of Canada guidance on countering disinformation).

Report a suspected policy violation separately
Reporting is distinct from correcting the public record. Check the platform’s current rules and report the specific concern accurately. TikTok says users can report misinformation that may violate its rules and describes tracking report outcomes and appealing moderation decisions (TikTok reporting guidance). YouTube’s policy covers some manipulated or misattributed content and notes that some material may be allowed with additional context.
A report does not guarantee removal, identify the person in the video, or ensure that your correction reaches its viewers. Keep any report reference and relevant records for your own follow-up.
Preserve records and consider safety or legal risks
Privately note the post URL, account handle, date and time observed, and the exact wording of the accusation. Keep screenshots or a copy only where lawful and appropriate, do not alter the evidence copy, and avoid circulating it unnecessarily. This is practical recordkeeping, not a guarantee that a particular method meets legal requirements.
