Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To copy a video file from your computer to a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM, use Google Cloud CLI’s gcloud compute scp command. For example: gcloud compute scp "/path/to/video.mp4" VM_NAME:/home/USERNAME/ --zone=ZONE. This transfers a local file to the VM over SSH; it does not download a video from YouTube or publish one there.
What “upload a YouTube stream file” means here
This guide uses “upload” to mean copying a video file already on your workstation to a Compute Engine VM. SCP is a file-transfer method, not a YouTube download or publishing tool. If you need a file for a livestream, first obtain a legitimate local copy; the material available here does not establish a special YouTube “stream file” format.

There are three separate operations: getting a video file, transferring it to a VM, and uploading or publishing a video through YouTube Studio. YouTube Studio’s upload flow begins at Create → Upload videos; uploading imports a file, while publishing makes it available to viewers. See YouTube’s upload instructions.
Before you copy the file
- Install and configure Google Cloud CLI on the computer that has the file. Google’s file-transfer guide requires the CLI on the source device.
- Identify the Compute Engine project, VM name, and zone. Use the project containing the VM; provide the zone explicitly if it is not already set in your CLI configuration.
- Make sure SSH access to the VM is available. Google’s guide calls out firewall access for SSH on TCP port 22. Follow your project’s access policy rather than opening a broad firewall rule unnecessarily.
- Choose a destination directory writable by the SSH user. A home directory such as
/home/USERNAME/is a practical destination; do not assume the user can write to privileged system directories.
Copy a single video with gcloud compute scp
- Open a terminal on the workstation where the video is stored.
- Run the transfer command, replacing each example value with your own:
gcloud compute scp "/local/path/my video.mp4" VM_NAME:/home/USERNAME/ --zone=ZONE
Quote a local path that contains spaces. The command’s basic form isgcloud compute scp LOCAL_FILE_PATH VM_NAME:REMOTE_DIR; the CLI reference documents the--zoneoption at gcloud compute scp. - Wait for the command to finish. If authentication, project selection, or SSH setup is incomplete, the CLI may prompt you or return an error; resolve that setup before retrying.
- Verify the destination. Connect with
gcloud compute ssh VM_NAME --zone=ZONE, then list the destination directory or check the exact filename. Google documents VM connections with gcloud compute ssh.
Copy a directory instead of one file
Add --recurse when copying a directory tree. For example:

Other transfer methods
| Method | Useful when | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
gcloud compute scp |
You can install Google Cloud CLI and want a direct workstation-to-VM transfer. | Requires working CLI, VM, and SSH access; Google’s guide calls out TCP port 22. |
Direct OpenSSH scp |
You use Linux or macOS and can manage SSH keys yourself. | Google’s documented pattern uses a key and the VM’s IPv4 address: scp -i KEY LOCAL_FILE USERNAME@IPv4_ADDRESS:~. The public key must be configured for the instance or project, and the VM needs an SSH-allowing firewall path. See the Google transfer guide. |
| SSH-in-browser upload | You prefer a browser-based transfer for a smaller file. | The upload control places the file in the SSH user’s /home/ directory. Google warns that browser uploads may be slow for large files and recommends gcloud compute scp if transfer speed is poor: file-transfer guide. |
| Cloud Storage staging | You do not want a direct workstation-to-VM transfer, or a bucket is already part of your workflow. | Upload the file to a bucket, then download it from the VM. Google lists Storage Object Admin for uploaders and Storage Object Viewer for downloaders; remove staged files you no longer need to avoid unwanted storage charges. See the Google transfer guide. |
| WinSCP | You want a graphical transfer from a Windows workstation to a Linux VM. | Google lists WinSCP as an option and notes that it uses SSH keys compatible with PuTTY. See the Google transfer guide. |
For direct OpenSSH, Google’s example uses an external IP. Its documentation also describes a bracketed-address form with -6 for an external IPv6 address. If the VM has no suitable external route, do not assume direct workstation-to-IP SCP will work; check the supported gcloud connection options and your private-network or IAP setup.
For Windows VMs, Google’s CLI transfer documentation limits support to Windows Server 2019 and later with SSH enabled. Remote Windows paths use backslash notation. Consult Google’s transfer guide and the CLI reference for the syntax and supported connection options.

If the video is still on YouTube
YouTube’s creator-download workflow applies to your own uploaded videos, not arbitrary videos uploaded by other people. According to YouTube Help, a creator can download an uploaded video as an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on its size, or export it with Google Takeout. The page also lists conditions that can block a download, including removal, strikes, pre-approved audio, and reaching five downloads of one video within 24 hours; check YouTube Help for current details.
YouTube says you cannot use the creator-download feature to download other users’ uploads. If you want to reuse someone else’s work, you need the necessary rights or permission; YouTube says it cannot grant those rights. Copyrighted material may receive a Content ID claim or be removed following a copyright request. See YouTube’s copyright guidance. Do not treat SCP as a way around YouTube’s download controls.

Troubleshooting
- SSH connection fails: Confirm the selected project, VM name, zone, VM state, SSH configuration, and firewall access. Check that the relevant path allows SSH on TCP port 22. The precise cause depends on your project configuration.
- Permission denied at the destination: Check that the remote path exists and the SSH user can write there. Try the user’s home directory rather than a protected system location.
- Large browser upload is slow: Use
gcloud compute scpinstead; Google specifically recommends it when SSH-in-browser transfer speed is poor for large files. - The VM has only an internal IP or uses IAP: The gcloud command reference offers
--internal-ipand--tunnel-through-iap. These flags do not replace the required network and IAM configuration. - A Windows-to-Linux transfer is awkward: Consider WinSCP, or use Google Cloud CLI or a Cloud Storage staging bucket, depending on your key and access setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than to manage a VM yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
