Copy the archive to the VPS first, verify that the files arrived intact and are readable, then configure an encoder on the VPS to send the stream to YouTube. These are two separate network legs: your source connection uploads the archive to the VPS; the VPS’s outbound connection carries the live stream to YouTube. Measure and plan each separately.
Choose the transfer route
For a local archive and a VPS with SSH access, use a transfer method supported at both ends. Rclone’s SFTP backend uses SSH v2; Rclone documents restartable transfers, integrity checks and timestamp preservation. The exact behavior and available checks can depend on the backend and configuration. Rclone documentation · Rclone SFTP backend

| Archive location | Practical route | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local computer or attached storage | Transfer directly to the VPS over SFTP, for example with Rclone. | Source upload speed, interruption recovery, destination capacity and encoder-user read access. |
| Another supported cloud-storage service | Use a tool such as Rclone to transfer between the cloud remote and VPS where supported. | Provider permissions, API throttles, quotas, possible egress charges, VPS capacity and network policy. Support for a provider does not guarantee every account permits every operation. |
| One-off SFTP or SCP client | Use the client if its workflow suits you. | Check that particular client and invocation’s interruption and resume behavior; do not assume it resumes automatically. |
There is no evidence-based universal fastest route: results depend on the endpoints, source connection, archive composition and server limits.
Estimate transfer time and check capacity
You cannot make a reliable time estimate from archive size alone. Total the bytes to transfer and measure sustained throughput from the actual source location to the VPS, or to a representative endpoint. A rough lower bound is total bytes divided by measured bytes per second. Allow extra time for protocol overhead, small-file metadata, throttling, retries and post-transfer verification. Begin early enough to complete those checks before scheduling the stream.

- High-capacity add-on storage.Specific uses: Business, personal
- Fast data transfers
- Plug-and-play ready for Windows PCs
- WD quality inside and out
- Confirm that the VPS has enough free disk space for the archive and any files or working space the playback setup requires.
- Check the VPS plan’s network policy and data allowance. The archive transfer consumes network capacity, and streaming later consumes outbound capacity.
- For a long transfer, use progress reporting and a persistent log. Rclone’s bandwidth limiter is expressed in bytes per second; network plans commonly quote bits per second. Rclone documentation
Copy the archive over SSH
With Rclone installed and an SFTP remote configured, a one-time copy can follow this pattern:
rclone copy /path/to/archive vps:/path/to/archive --progress --log-file transfer.log

- Massive capacity, up to 22TB capacity. (1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.).Specific uses: Personal
- Includes software for device management and backup with password protection (Download and installation required. Terms and conditions apply. User account registration may be required.)
- 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- SuperSpeed USB (5 Gbps); USB 2.0 compatible
- Trusted storage built with WD reliability
Here, vps: is a remote name you configured; it is not a built-in server address. The destination path depends on the VPS account’s SFTP home-directory rules. Choose a directory that the account running your playback or encoder process can read.
- Set up trusted SSH access. Verify the VPS host key using a trusted known-hosts setup and use SSH key authentication where appropriate. Do not disable host-key checking. Restrict permissions on SSH credentials and any configuration containing secrets.
- Run a copy for a one-time upload. Rclone’s copy operation transfers new or changed files without making the destination an exact mirror. Keep the progress output and log so you can inspect the run.
- Resume or retry deliberately. Rclone describes its transfer operations as restartable. If a connection drops, rerun the copy and review the log rather than assuming that the entire archive must be sent again. Exact integrity-check availability depends on the backend.
- Use sync cautiously for recurring updates. A one-way sync makes the destination directory identical to the source and can delete destination-only files. Preview the changes with a dry run or equivalent before running any operation that could remove data. Rclone copy and sync descriptions
For a cloud-hosted archive, configure the source and destination remotes and transfer directly where the service and account permit it. Rclone says it supports more than 70 cloud-storage products and transfers between providers; that capability does not remove provider-specific quotas, fees or access restrictions. Rclone

Verify the files before building the stream
A command finishing is not proof that a playlist is ready. Check both the transfer and the files’ usability on the VPS.
- Compare source and destination file counts and sizes.
- Use checksum verification where supported; available checks vary by backend.
- Open or probe representative video and audio files on the VPS, including files from different parts of the archive.
- Confirm the encoder or playback service account can read the destination directory and files.
- Check that the intended playlist includes the right files and that the VPS has enough room for the full working setup.
Configure the VPS encoder for YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder running on the VPS. YouTube documents the stream key as the credential connecting encoder output to the stream and provides a reset procedure if it is compromised. Manage live stream settings · Create a live stream with an encoder
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password. Do not expose it in public examples, source repositories, logs or shell history readable by other users. Restrict access to configuration and credentials on the VPS.
- Choose settings for the media and target stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with recommendations that vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. It advises constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encryption. Check YouTube’s live settings page for the bitrate guidance applicable to your chosen settings, since that table can change. YouTube encoder settings
- Decide whether to remux or transcode. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the audio or video; transcoding decodes and encodes media, using more compute and potentially changing quality. Whether the files can be relayed without transcoding depends on their codecs, container and the selected stream settings. There is no single suitable FFmpeg command without knowing those details and the VPS resources.
- Validate the server’s resources and outbound connection. The VPS, not your original computer, must sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate once the media is there. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams if both are used. Also ensure the VPS has enough CPU or GPU capacity for the selected decode, encode or remux path. YouTube streaming tips
- Start an early preview and test. Run the encoder before the planned stream, check that YouTube receives the preview, listen to audio, inspect moving scenes and verify that the playlist advances as intended. Monitor stream health and resolve warnings before relying on the setup. YouTube streaming tips
Keep copyright and live-stream rules in view
Having a file on your VPS does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check the relevant rights for every item in a long playlist. YouTube’s live-stream setup and encoder guidance should be followed for the stream itself; do not assume that repeated playback, a VPS or a successful preview makes copyrighted or otherwise restricted material permitted. Review your channel’s applicable YouTube policies and the rights attached to the media before going live.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this workflow if my archive is already in cloud storage?
Yes, if the source service, account permissions and VPS destination support the chosen transfer. A direct cloud-to-VPS transfer can avoid downloading and re-uploading through your local computer.
Does a successful archive transfer prove the YouTube stream will work?
No. File integrity, readable permissions, media compatibility, VPS capacity and YouTube’s incoming preview are separate checks.
