How to Cool a Room Safely When You Can’t Afford Air Conditioning

Block sun, ventilate only when outdoor air is cooler and suitable, and treat fans as limited airflow—not a substitute for cooling. Learn when to leave for a cooled public place and when to seek medical help.

If you cannot afford or access air conditioning, first stop sunlight and other heat from building up indoors. Keep windows closed while outdoor air is hotter than the room; open them when it cools, if outdoor air is suitable. Use fans cautiously, cool your body with water and a shower or bath, and go to an air-conditioned public place if your home remains dangerously hot. These steps can reduce heat exposure, but they are not a substitute for medical help when someone becomes ill.

How can you cool a room without AC?

Work through the day in this order: block direct sun before it warms the room, limit indoor heat sources, ventilate only when conditions outside are better, and move to a cooler place if the room remains too hot. The safest choice depends on both indoor and outdoor conditions; opening windows or running a fan is not always helpful.

Before direct sun reaches the windows

Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with shades, drapes, roller shades, or other window coverings. Reflective window products can help reduce incoming solar heat. If feasible, exterior awnings or louvers can reduce heat entering through windows more effectively than coverings mounted indoors, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Ready.gov also recommends reflective window coverings and weather-stripping.

These measures reduce heat gain; they do not guarantee a safe indoor temperature. If you already own curtains or shades, using them during direct sun is a no-cost first step. Reflective shades are another option, but they are not a replacement for air conditioning when a room becomes dangerously hot.

Reduce heat made inside

Use the stove and oven less during hot periods, as cooking can add heat to the room. Where practical, choose meals that do not require heating the kitchen, and avoid running other heat-producing appliances unnecessarily.

When should you open the windows?

Compare the temperature outdoors with the temperature indoors. The EPA advises: “In general, if the air outside is hotter than the air inside, close the windows.” Keep sun-facing windows shaded, too. When outdoor air becomes cooler than the indoor air, open windows if outdoor air quality and household safety allow. Once the room has cooled, close the windows again to help retain the cooler air.

Check air quality before bringing outdoor air inside, especially during wildfire smoke or other pollution events. The CDC’s guidance on the HeatRisk Tool and Air Quality Index explains how to use those indicators. If outdoor air quality is poor, opening windows may bring pollutants indoors; weigh that against the need to reduce indoor heat and follow local public-health advice.

If the home is secure and it is safe to do so, a fan can help move cooler outdoor air in or push warmer indoor air out during the cooler part of the day. Close the windows after the indoor air cools rather than leaving them open as outdoor temperatures rise.

Is it safe to use a fan when it’s very hot?

A fan moves air; it does not lower the air temperature. The CDC advises using fans indoors only when the indoor temperature is below 90°F, noting that above 90°F a fan can increase body temperature. The EPA gives a separate caution: “Do not use an electric fan in a closed room.” It also advises against relying on electric fans for cooling when the room is in the mid-90s°F or hotter. These agency statements are not identical thresholds; follow the more cautious CDC limit for indoor fan use and do not treat airflow as protection from heat illness.

If your room is at or above 90°F, prioritize getting to a cooler place and cooling your body rather than relying on a fan. The EPA’s closed-room warning is also important: a fan in a closed room is not a safe way to manage dangerous heat.

How can you cool yourself while the room is hot?

  • Drink more water than usual, and do not wait until you feel thirsty, following CDC advice. If a clinician has told you to limit fluids, follow that medical guidance.
  • Take a cool shower or bath to help lower your body temperature.
  • Reduce physical exertion during the hottest part of the day where possible.
  • Check on household members and neighbors, particularly people who may have difficulty recognizing heat danger or getting to a cooler place on their own.

Older adults, infants and children, and people with chronic conditions can be at greater risk during extreme heat. The CDC provides additional advice for older adults aged 65 and older.

What if the room stays dangerously hot?

Leave for an air-conditioned public place rather than trying to tough it out in an overheated room. A library, mall, cooling center, or another accessible cooled location may provide relief; even a few hours in an air-conditioned place can lower heat-related health risk, according to the CDC’s guidance for people without air conditioning. Check with your local health department or emergency management agency to find out whether cooling centers are open, where they are, and what hours or access rules apply. Availability varies by location and heat conditions.

Plan how to get there, especially if you are helping a child, older adult, or someone with a health condition. If travel is difficult, contact local emergency management or community services for current options rather than assuming a nearby facility is open.

When should you get medical help?

Do not wait for a room-cooling method to work if someone develops possible heat-illness symptoms. The CDC’s no-air-conditioning guidance identifies muscle cramps, headache, nausea, and vomiting as reasons to seek medical care immediately. Heat-related illness can become an emergency; the EPA advises calling 911 in case of heat-related illness. Follow emergency dispatchers’ instructions.

What help is available if you cannot afford cooling?

Ask your local or state energy-assistance office about the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which may provide energy-related assistance. Eligibility, services, and application procedures depend on the program and location; do not assume that a particular benefit or amount is guaranteed. Your local health department or emergency management agency can also tell you about cooling centers and other local heat resources.
