Use FFmpeg on a Linux VPS by inspecting the source, selecting a compatible container and codecs, running a deliberate command, and then verifying the resulting file and the server resources it consumed. A typical MP4 delivery job is:
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 22 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
Every option in that command has a purpose. The sections below show how to adapt it for remuxing, resizing, subtitles, audio extraction, batch processing, and optional hardware acceleration without turning a VPS into an unreliable production bottleneck.

What FFmpeg does on a VPS
The FFmpeg project calls its tool “a universal media converter.” It is a command-line program that can read local files, pipes, and network streams and write one or more outputs. A VPS is simply a remote Linux machine on which the same program runs without a desktop interface. You connect over SSH, run a command or script, and leave the process to finish in the shell, a terminal multiplexer, a service manager, or a queue.
Conversion can mean two different operations. Remuxing copies already-compressed streams into another container, so it is fast and does not reduce quality. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes audio, video, or both, allowing a new codec, resolution, bitrate, or filter at the cost of CPU time and usually another generation of quality loss. Decide which operation you need before choosing options.

Prepare the Linux VPS
Install and record the build
Install FFmpeg from your distribution or from a maintained build that matches your operating system. On Debian or Ubuntu, a distribution package is commonly installed with:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg
On Fedora or another RPM-based distribution, use the distribution’s documented package command and repositories. Package names and repository availability differ by release, so confirm that the package is supported for your image rather than copying a repository configuration meant for another version.

ffmpeg -version
The output identifies the FFmpeg version, compiler configuration, and enabled libraries. Those details matter when a command works on one VPS but fails on another because an encoder, filter, or hardware interface was omitted from its build.
Check storage, permissions, and load
Keep the source, destination, and temporary files in a filesystem with enough free space. A transcode can require the original file, a growing destination, and additional temporary data at the same time. Check the target mount before starting:
df -h /path/to/work
du -sh /path/to/source-directory
Run the job as a user that can read the input and create files in the destination directory. Avoid solving permission errors by making the directory world-writable; fix ownership or group membership instead. On a shared VPS, inspect current CPU, memory, and disk activity and reserve capacity for the services that must remain online.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspect the input before choosing settings
Use ffprobe, which is installed with most FFmpeg packages, to see the streams and metadata:
ffprobe input.mp4
For a script-friendly summary, request only the fields you need:
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration,size:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,channels,sample_rate -of json input.mp4
Look for the number and type of streams, video dimensions and frame rate, audio sample rate and channel count, subtitle tracks, rotation metadata, and the existing container. An input may contain several audio languages, an attached image, timecode, or data streams that a simple command will not preserve. Inspection prevents you from selecting an output that cannot carry the streams you intend to keep.
Understand FFmpeg command syntax
The documented synopsis is:
ffmpeg [global_options] {[input_file_options] -i input_url} ... {[output_file_options] output_url}
Options before an input apply to that input; options after -i normally apply to the next output. Anything that is not interpreted as an option is treated as an output URL. This ordering is why a command should be written from left to right rather than assembled from unrelated snippets.

-i input.mp4opens the source.-mapselects streams explicitly.-map 0:v:0means the first video stream from input 0;-map 0:a:0?means the first audio stream if one exists. The question mark makes an optional map non-fatal when the input has no audio.-c:vand-c:aselect video and audio encoders.-c copycopies streams without re-encoding.-vfapplies a video filter chain such as scaling or deinterlacing.-b:a,-crf, and related options control quality or bitrate for the selected encoder.- The final filename determines the output URL and usually suggests a container, but the extension alone does not choose suitable codecs.
Choose a container and codecs
Keep the layers separate: a container such as MP4, Matroska, or WebM holds streams; a codec compresses each stream; a filter changes decoded media; a protocol describes how data is read or written. A container can hold several codec combinations, but players support only some of them.
For a broadly compatible downloadable or browser-delivery file, H.264 video in an MP4 container with AAC audio is a common starting point. Use a pixel format such as yuv420p when older or less capable players are part of the target audience. If the target application explicitly supports newer codecs, you can trade encoding time and compatibility for smaller files, but confirm support first rather than assuming that a modern codec will play everywhere.
Compatibility, quality per bitrate, CPU or GPU cost, wall-clock time, and operational simplicity are the useful comparison axes. A single “best” codec does not exist: a playback requirement can outweigh a size reduction, while a high-volume archive can justify slower encoding if the storage saving is material.
Core conversion recipes
1. Try a remux before transcoding
If the existing streams are accepted by the destination container, copy them:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mp4
This avoids generation loss and is usually limited by disk I/O. It fails when a selected stream is incompatible with MP4 or when the source has features the destination cannot represent. In that case, transcode the incompatible stream instead of assuming that changing the extension is enough.
2. Create a compatible MP4
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 22 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
libx264selects the software H.264 encoder when it is present in the build.-preset mediumbalances encoding speed and compression efficiency. Slower presets generally spend more CPU time to reduce the bitrate needed for similar quality; faster presets finish sooner with a larger file at the same nominal quality.-crf 22requests constant-rate-factor quality. CRF is not a universal quality score; the visible result and file size depend on the source, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and content. Test a short representative clip on the actual VPS before standardizing a value.-pix_fmt yuv420pimproves compatibility with players that do not accept higher-chroma pixel formats.-c:a aac -b:a 160kencodes audio at a defined bitrate. Raise or lower it according to the source and listening requirements.-movflags +faststartmoves MP4 metadata toward the beginning so a file can begin playback sooner while it is being downloaded.
Do not copy a video stream and simultaneously apply a video filter: filtering requires decoding and re-encoding. Keep the command explicit so a later edit does not silently change which streams are processed.
3. Resize while encoding
Scale to a maximum width while preserving aspect ratio:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -vf 'scale=1280:-2' -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 22 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k output-1280.mp4
The value -2 makes FFmpeg calculate an even height, which many encoders require. Scaling up a small source cannot restore detail. If the source has a display-aspect-ratio or rotation tag, inspect it with ffprobe and verify the output on a player rather than relying only on width and height fields.

4. Crop or deinterlace only when needed
Filters are applied in order. For example, crop a known 16:9 region and then scale it:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf 'crop=1920:1080:0:0,scale=1280:-2' -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a copy cropped.mp4
For interlaced material, deinterlace before scaling:

ffmpeg -i input-interlaced.mpg -vf 'yadif,scale=1280:-2' -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 160k progressive.mp4
Replace the crop coordinates with values measured from the actual frame. A wrong crop silently removes picture content, and deinterlacing progressive footage can soften it, so use these filters only when inspection or the source’s production history justifies them.
5. Burn subtitles into the picture
To make subtitles visible on players that cannot select a subtitle track, burn them into the video:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf 'subtitles=input.srt' -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a copy subtitled.mp4
This requires a build with the subtitle filter and a readable subtitle file. Burning subtitles permanently changes the picture and forces a video encode. If the target player supports selectable subtitles and the source format allows them, muxing a subtitle stream instead preserves the choice for viewers.
6. Extract or convert audio
Copy an audio stream when the destination container supports its codec:
ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy audio.m4a
If copying fails because the codec and container do not match, encode it:
ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 160k audio.m4a
-vn disables video output; -map 0:a:0 makes the selected audio track unambiguous.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →7. Produce WebM when the target requires it
Use the codecs required by the receiving service rather than merely changing the extension. A typical WebM command uses a WebM-compatible video and audio encoder available in your build:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 32 -b:v 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm
Verify encoder availability with ffmpeg -encoders. VP9 and Opus can require considerably more CPU than a simple remux, and the CRF scale is encoder-specific; validate quality and size on a representative clip.
Stream mapping, metadata, and filenames
Automatic stream selection is convenient for a quick test but can pick an unexpected language or omit an attachment. Use explicit maps for production jobs. To retain all input streams when the destination supports them, start with -map 0; then exclude or transcode individual streams as needed. Copying every stream into an incompatible container can fail, so inspect the result rather than assuming that a successful command preserved everything.

ffmpeg -i 'Camera footage [take 1].mov' 'Camera footage [take 1].mp4'
Generate unique output names and never let a retry overwrite a completed file accidentally. For automated work, write to a temporary name and rename only after validation:
tmp='output.mp4.part'
final='output.mp4'
ffmpeg -i 'input.mov' -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 160k "$tmp" && mv -- "$tmp" "$final"
The mv runs only when FFmpeg exits successfully. Keep the temporary file in the same filesystem as the final file so the rename is atomic on normal local filesystems.
Verify the result instead of trusting the exit message
FFmpeg’s exit status tells a script whether the process completed, but a completed process is not proof that the output meets your delivery requirement. Check the file and its streams:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration,size:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 output.mp4
Compare duration with the source, confirm that the expected video and audio streams exist, and inspect the first and last seconds for sync or truncation. Check that the file size is plausible and that the destination filesystem still has free space. For a machine-readable failure test:
if ! ffmpeg -v error -i output.mp4 -f null -; then
echo 'Output failed decode validation' >&2
exit 1
fi
Retain FFmpeg’s log for scheduled or batch jobs. The default progress output is useful interactively; redirect both output streams when running unattended:
ffmpeg ... >ffmpeg-output.log 2>&1
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run long jobs safely on a VPS
Choose a process supervisor
An SSH session can disappear while the conversion continues to consume resources or can terminate the process when the session closes, depending on how it was started. For an interactive job, use a terminal multiplexer such as tmux or screen, detach, and reconnect later. For recurring work, use a service manager, job queue, or scheduler that records exit status and logs.
A minimal detached run might be:
nohup ffmpeg -i 'input.mp4' -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 160k 'output.mp4' >convert.log 2>&1 &
A supervisor or queue is preferable when jobs must be retried, limited, or monitored. Give each job a unique working directory and log name so parallel runs cannot overwrite one another.
Limit contention
Transcoding can saturate CPU cores, consume memory for filters and buffering, and generate sustained disk I/O. Limit concurrency instead of launching one FFmpeg process per file without measurement. Leave headroom for web servers, databases, SSH, and monitoring. If a job is non-urgent, lower its scheduling priority with tools such as nice and, where appropriate, ionice; these reduce interference but do not create additional capacity.
Network inputs and outputs also consume bandwidth. A conversion that reads a remote stream and writes to another host can be limited by the network rather than the encoder. Stage files locally when repeatability matters, then upload the verified result.
Make retries safe
Use quoted paths, deterministic input-to-output naming, a temporary suffix, and an atomic rename. On failure, preserve the log and temporary file until you know whether it contains useful diagnostic information. A retry should not treat a partial file as a completed artifact. Record the FFmpeg version and command alongside the output when reproducibility is important.
Best Value
Hardware acceleration: optional, not automatic
FFmpeg can use hardware interfaces such as VAAPI and QSV when the VPS exposes suitable hardware, drivers, permissions, and an FFmpeg build with the corresponding support. List the acceleration components enabled in your build:
Recommended Free Tools
ffmpeg -hwaccels
Check that an encoder exists before designing a job around it:
ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'vaapi|qsv'
On Linux, VAAPI commonly requires access to a render device such as /dev/dri/renderD128. The conversion user must have permission to open that device, usually through the device’s group ownership. A VPS advertised as having a GPU may still lack a usable media encoder, may expose a different device path, or may provide drivers that do not match the installed FFmpeg build.
A VAAPI workflow often resembles:
ffmpeg -hwaccel vaapi -vaapi_device /dev/dri/renderD128 -i input.mp4 -vf 'format=nv12,hwupload' -c:v h264_vaapi -b:v 4M -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.mp4
The exact filters and encoder options depend on the device. Hardware frames may need to be uploaded or downloaded between system memory and the device; those copies can erase the expected speed advantage. Hardware encoders also use different quality controls from software encoders, so do not transfer a CRF value blindly.
Measure the complete job on the actual VPS, including startup, filtering, memory transfers, disk writes, and verification. Keep a software fallback. Hardware acceleration is an optional capacity choice for sustained throughput, not a prerequisite for a basic conversion, and it is not guaranteed to be faster for short files or complex filters.
A repeatable batch script
The following pattern processes one input, writes a temporary output, records a log, and validates the finished file. Adapt the codec and filter settings to your target rather than treating it as a universal preset.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
input=${1:?Usage: $0 input-file output-file}
output=${2:?Usage: $0 input-file output-file}
tmp="${output}.part"
log="${output}.log"
cleanup() {
rm -f -- "$tmp"
}
trap cleanup EXIT
ffmpeg -hide_banner -y -i "$input"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 22 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart
"$tmp" >"$log" 2>&1
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration,size
-of default=noprint_wrappers=1 "$tmp" >>"$log"
mv -- "$tmp" "$output"
trap - EXIT
set -euo pipefail makes missing arguments and failed commands visible. The temporary file is removed on an error, while the log remains for diagnosis. In a production queue, add an explicit policy for overwriting, a timeout appropriate to your media, disk-space checks, and a concurrency limit.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Unknown encoder” or “Encoder not found”
The installed build does not include the requested encoder, or its name is different from the one in the command. List available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders, install a build that supports the required library, or choose an encoder already present. Record the working build so another VPS can be configured consistently.
“Permission denied” on input, output, or a device
Check file ownership and directory execute permissions, then check the mount’s read-only status. For hardware acceleration, inspect permissions on the render device and add the service user to the appropriate group only if your operating-system policy allows it. Reconnect the session after a group change and test the device with a small command.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The output is huge or visibly poor
CRF, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, preset, and source complexity all affect the result. Confirm that you did not accidentally select a lossless or very high-bitrate mode, and verify that a scale filter is not enlarging the source. Compare short samples at different CRF values on the actual content; there is no reliable universal number.
The output will not play
Inspect the container and every stream with ffprobe. A copied stream may be legal in the source but unsupported by the destination container or player. Re-encode only the incompatible stream, select a broadly supported pixel format, and verify that the target application accepts the chosen codec combination.
The job stops when SSH disconnects
Run it inside tmux or screen, use a supervisor or queue for unattended work, and redirect logs. Check whether the process is still running before starting a second copy that could double resource use.
The GPU path is slower than software
Confirm that the intended hardware encoder is actually selected, that the device is not shared by competing jobs, and that filters are not forcing repeated memory transfers. Compare an equivalent software command and include file reads, writes, and verification in the timing. Retain the software path when it is simpler or faster for the workload.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Record
ffmpeg -versionand confirm the required encoders and filters exist. - Inspect streams with
ffprobebefore selecting maps, codecs, or filters. - Reserve space for source, destination, and temporary data on the correct filesystem.
- Quote every variable filename and use unique output names.
- Choose a container and codec combination supported by the actual playback target.
- Use explicit stream mapping for production or multilingual media.
- Write to a temporary file and rename only after a successful, validated encode.
- Limit concurrent jobs and leave CPU, memory, I/O, and network headroom for other services.
- Capture logs, exit status, duration, stream details, and output size.
- Treat VAAPI, QSV, and other hardware paths as optional and benchmark them on the VPS.
