For a YouTube playlist made from separate uploads, convert each video to a consistent delivery format—typically MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio—without combining the files. Keep each source’s frame rate and aspect ratio unless you have a specific reason to change them. FFmpeg can batch-convert a folder, but first check what its files contain: streamcopy is appropriate only when the existing streams are compatible with MP4 and need no filtering or codec changes.
Choose what “consistent format” means
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos; its files do not need to be joined into one long video. For separate uploads, consistency usually means using the same container and codecs while preserving each clip’s natural dimensions, aspect ratio, and recorded frame rate. YouTube’s recommended upload settings include MP4, H.264, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and 48 kHz audio. Its player adapts to different aspect ratios, so do not stretch every clip to one shape or add black bars just to make the files look uniform. Use a shared frame size or frame rate only when a project, editor, or delivery specification requires it. A standard target can make files easier to manage, but scaling, padding, cropping, frame-rate conversion, and color changes alter the source in different ways. Decide which changes are actually needed before writing a batch command.

Do not assume every file in a folder has the same streams or properties. Check at least one example of each kind of source, paying attention to video and audio codecs, stream count, resolution, frame rate, rotation, pixel format, color metadata, and audio layout. FFmpeg’s input and output options are order-sensitive: options apply to the following input or output, so keep each option in the appropriate place.

For a readable inspection, run:
ffmpeg -i "input.mkv"FFmpeg prints stream information and may also report that it cannot determine duration or that some metadata is missing; that does not by itself mean the file cannot be converted. For machine-readable inspection, FFprobe is distributed with FFmpeg:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "input.mkv"Use the output to decide whether the file has the audio and video tracks you want. If it contains multiple audio tracks, subtitles, data, or attachments, select deliberately rather than copying every stream into the new container.
Choose streamcopy or re-encoding
Use streamcopy when codecs already fit
Streamcopy moves encoded streams into a new container without decoding and encoding them again. It is fast and avoids quality loss from an additional encoding pass, but only works when the source streams are compatible with the destination container and no filtering or normalization is required.

ffmpeg -i "input.mkv" -c copy "output.mp4"This is a pattern, not a guarantee: it can fail if one or more source streams cannot be placed in MP4. It also cannot resize, change frame rate, alter color, or apply filters. If you need those changes—or need to normalize a codec—re-encode instead. See the FFmpeg documentation for stream selection and option behavior.
Re-encode to normalize codecs
For a common YouTube upload target, use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. The following command re-encodes video and audio while leaving the source frame rate and dimensions alone:
ffmpeg -i "input.mkv" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -ar 48000 -movflags +faststart "output.mp4"The optional ? on the audio map lets the command continue if there is no audio stream. The explicit maps select the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream; change them if inspection shows that the desired tracks are elsewhere. The command uses a 4:2:0 pixel format and 48 kHz audio, but it does not set a fixed video bitrate or frame rate. FFmpeg’s encoder defaults determine quality and file size unless you choose additional encoder settings.

YouTube lists AAC-LC among its supported audio choices, alongside Opus and Eclipsa Audio; AAC-LC is a practical common choice, not the only accepted codec. If a source already has suitable audio, streamcopying audio while re-encoding video may avoid an unnecessary audio generation, provided the chosen output container accepts that stream.
Set bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations by resolution and frame-rate category, not mandatory caps or one-size-fits-all settings. Its current upload guidance gives these examples for SDR:

YouTube also lists 384 kbps for stereo audio. These are platform reference recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular visual result. The right re-encoding settings depend on the source and your quality, file-size, and processing-time priorities. Avoid needlessly raising resolution or frame rate: that cannot restore detail that was not in the recording. YouTube’s guidance says to encode and upload at the frame rate at which the content was recorded. Consult the YouTube upload settings for the full current table, including other formats.

Batch-convert separate playlist videos
After testing one file and confirming the output plays correctly, you can process a folder. In a shell with FFmpeg installed, this Bash example converts matching MKV files to MP4 using the same codec policy as above:

doneThe output name in this example appends .mp4 to the original filename, so a source named concert.mkv becomes concert.mkv.mp4. To avoid that, replace the output expression with a deliberate basename conversion, or use a script suited to your shell and naming rules. This loop handles only files ending in lowercase .mkv; change the pattern for your actual inputs. Test with a small sample before processing a large collection, and inspect the results rather than assuming every input followed the same path.

For a smaller one-off job, repeat the tested FFmpeg command with each input and output filename. For more complex batches, map tracks based on inspection rather than applying a broad “copy all streams” rule that may create incompatible outputs.

If you mean one joined video instead
Joining clips creates one output file; it is different from making multiple consistent files for a playlist. FFmpeg offers two main approaches.
Concat demuxer: compatible files, no re-encode
When files have matching stream structure and codec parameters, the concat demuxer can join them without re-encoding. Create a text file such as list.txt:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy joined.mp4This approach depends on compatible inputs; it is not a way to normalize clips that differ in relevant stream properties. Use trusted local filenames in the list, and check FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer documentation for details about safe paths and file requirements.

Concat filter: normalize and re-encode
When clips need conversion or filtering to join cleanly, use the concat filter and re-encode. For two inputs with one video and one audio stream each:
ffmpeg -i "part1.mp4" -i "part2.mp4" -filter_complex "[0:v:0][0:a:0][1:v:0][1:a:0]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]" -map "[v]" -map "[a]" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -ar 48000 "joined.mp4"The inputs must be prepared for the filter: differences in dimensions, pixel format, frame rate, time base, or audio layout may require appropriate filtering and resampling first. This example is specifically for two inputs with audio; adapt the filter for the actual number of clips and streams. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
Validate outputs before uploading
- Open each sample output and check the beginning, middle, and end for picture, sound, sync, and unexpected cropping or bars.
- Inspect the output streams with FFprobe to confirm the intended MP4 container, video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio sample rate.
- Check file names and durations, especially if the batch script created unexpected extensions or skipped files.
- Upload a sample privately or as an unlisted video if you want to confirm YouTube accepts the actual file before preparing the whole playlist.
Common problems and fixes
- “Could not write header” or an unsupported codec in MP4: the source stream may not be compatible with the output container. Re-encode the incompatible stream or choose a suitable container; do not assume
-c copycan move every codec into MP4. - The output is missing audio, subtitles, or the intended language track: automatic stream selection or a map such as
0:a:0may have selected a different stream. Inspect the input and adjust-map; include subtitles only when the output container and workflow support them. - Different clips have different dimensions or look stretched: preserving native dimensions is the default, and YouTube supports varied aspect ratios. If a shared canvas is required, choose an intentional scale-and-pad or crop policy rather than stretching; avoid baking in padding without a delivery reason.
- Frame rate or motion looks different: an unintended frame-rate conversion may have occurred. Remove fixed frame-rate options unless the project requires conversion; YouTube recommends matching the recorded frame rate.
- Encoding takes a long time or files are larger than expected: re-encoding uses processing time and produces results shaped by encoder settings. If streams already suit the target and no filters are needed, test streamcopy instead; otherwise adjust encoding settings with a sample and check the resulting quality and size.
- A batch command skips files: check the file extension pattern, shell, working directory, and whether the source names contain spaces. The example loop is Bash-specific and handles lowercase
.mkvnames only.
