You can put a video into an MP4 container without losing quality if its existing audio and video streams are compatible with MP4: use remuxing, also called streamcopy, rather than re-encoding. If you need to change a codec, resize or filter the video, or otherwise alter the streams, you must transcode; that creates a new encode and cannot guarantee identical quality.
First decide whether you need a new container or new codecs
MP4 is a container: it holds encoded video, audio and sometimes subtitles, chapters and metadata. The word “convert” can mean either changing that wrapper or changing the encoded streams inside it. Those are different operations, with different effects on quality.

- Remuxing (streamcopy): copies the existing encoded streams into a new container without decoding and encoding them again. It can preserve the existing stream quality, provided the streams are accepted by the destination container.
- Transcoding: decodes and encodes one or more streams again. It is necessary when you need a different codec or a transformation such as scaling or filtering, but a new encode is not guaranteed to match the original.
FFmpeg explains streamcopy and its container-compatibility limitation in its documentation. Its transcoding documentation explains that streams are transcoded by default unless you request copying with -c copy.
Check what is in the source file
Before choosing a method, inspect the video and audio codecs, along with any subtitles or other tracks you need. Then clarify the goal: do you only need an MP4 file, or does the video need different codecs, a new resolution, a filter, or another change? The answer determines whether streamcopy is possible.

- If the streams already work in MP4 and you do not need to alter them, try remuxing.
- If a required stream is not supported in the destination container, or you need to change or filter it, transcode that stream.
- If only one stream needs to change, you may be able to copy the others rather than re-encoding everything.
Container support is not the same as playback compatibility: the intended device or player must also support the streams inside the MP4.
Remux compatible streams with FFmpeg
In FFmpeg, -c copy requests streamcopy. For example, this command asks FFmpeg to copy the streams from an MKV file into an MP4 container:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4
Replace input.mkv and output.mp4 with your filenames. The command does not re-encode the streams, so it avoids quality loss from a new encode and is generally much faster than transcoding. It does not make incompatible streams compatible: if the stream format or required information is not accepted in MP4, the command may fail or produce a file your player cannot use.

Streamcopy cannot be used for a stream that needs filtering, because filters operate on decoded frames. FFmpeg documents this limitation alongside its streamcopy guidance.

Transcode only when a stream must change
When you need a different codec or a video transformation, choose an encoder supported by your target devices and use a quality-oriented rate-control mode. There is no universal setting that guarantees the same quality for every source, codec, encoder and playback target.
Use constant quality as a tradeoff
HandBrake offers constant-quality encoding controlled by RF/CRF settings. Its quality documentation warns that settings made drastically lower can cause significant detail loss. Treat the control as a way to balance quality, file size and encoding choices—not as a promise of lossless output. The right setting depends on the source and your requirements.

Test the result on the device that matters
Encode a short, representative segment first, then inspect it on the intended playback device. Look closely at motion, fine detail and any scenes that are difficult to encode. Check the resulting codec and container, resolution, file size and playback, rather than assuming a preset or encoder will suit every use.

A transcode does not have to mean re-encoding every track. Where the workflow allows, copy compatible streams and encode only those that need modification. FFmpeg’s documentation describes stream selection and copy behavior; HandBrake’s documented controls and presets offer a separate preset-based workflow.

After conversion, check the details that matter to your file and playback setup:
- Video and audio codecs, and whether the target player supports them
- Audio tracks and subtitles you intended to keep
- Chapters and metadata, if needed
- Timestamps and frame rate
- Resolution and whether any scaling or filtering occurred
Choose presets and hardware encoding by the result
Presets and hardware encoders make different tradeoffs in encoding speed and output characteristics. HandBrake describes its hardware presets as optimized for speed. Do not assume hardware and software encoding will produce the same output, or that one option is universally better: compare the resulting codec, quality, file size, speed and compatibility against your own playback needs. The documentation does not establish a universal size or speed result for a given video.

For a command-line workflow, FFmpeg documents stream selection and copy options. For a preset-based workflow, consult HandBrake’s current documentation for the available controls and presets. In either case, verify the output rather than relying on the filename extension alone.
