To convert an STL mesh to OBJ, import the STL into Blender, check its size and orientation, then export it with File > Export > Wavefront (.obj). OBJ can carry mesh geometry and basic material information, but it cannot restore colors or scene data that the STL never contained. Keep the OBJ, its companion MTL file, and any referenced texture images together when the destination application needs them.
How do I convert an STL file to OBJ in Blender?
Blender documents import and export support for both STL and Wavefront OBJ, making it a direct route for transferring a triangle mesh. Its manuals span different releases—the OBJ reference is for Blender 5.2 LTS, the format index for 5.3, and the STL reference for 4.1—so labels or locations may vary slightly in another version. Blender’s supported file formats include both formats.

- Import the STL: Choose File > Import > STL. In the importer options, review scale, scene units, Forward/Up axes, facet normals, and mesh validation. The exact menu wording can differ between releases. Blender’s STL reference describes these controls.
- Inspect the imported object: Confirm that the mesh appears, faces the expected direction, and has plausible dimensions. If the file may be corrupt, enable Validate Mesh. Blender says validation checks for corrupt data and fixes it when possible; it can make importing slower.
- Choose what to export: Select the object or objects you want to transfer. In the OBJ export options, enable Selected Only to limit the export to that selection. If it is off, the exporter can include other supported scene objects.
- Export the OBJ: Choose File > Export > Wavefront (.obj). Set the scale and Forward/Up mapping to suit the application that will open the file. Blender’s documented convention is Y Forward and Z Up; other applications may use different axis conventions.
- Choose geometry and material options: Set whether to write UV coordinates and normals, and whether to create the companion MTL file. If the destination needs materials, keep the MTL and any referenced image textures alongside the OBJ. A relative or stripped path mode can make references more portable; absolute paths may work only on the computer where they were created.
- Verify the result in its destination: Open the OBJ in the receiving application and check object count, orientation, dimensions, normals or shading, and material or image availability.
Blender’s Wavefront OBJ manual describes the export controls and format limits. It calls OBJ a “popular plain text format” with “only basic geometry and material support.”
Can Blender open STL and export OBJ?
Yes. Blender documents STL import and Wavefront OBJ export, as well as controls for scale, axes, mesh validation, normals, UVs, and material-file handling. That makes it suitable for a straightforward mesh conversion, but not for carrying every property of a Blender scene into OBJ.

What does STL-to-OBJ conversion preserve?
The conversion transfers mesh geometry to a format that can also hold basic material information. It cannot recreate attributes absent from the STL. STL is geometry-focused, so do not expect conversion to recover color or material assignments that the input did not provide.
- Geometry: The mesh is the core content being transferred. Inspect it after import and again in the destination application.
- Materials and textures: OBJ can use an MTL sidecar and reference image textures. Exporting an MTL does not itself supply colors, materials, or images missing from the source; preserve referenced files and their paths if they exist.
- Scene contents: Blender’s OBJ documentation says the format does not support armatures, lights, cameras, empties, parenting, or transformations. It is not a full scene-transfer format.
Why did my OBJ change scale or orientation?
Applications can interpret axes and units differently, and Blender exposes scale and Forward/Up controls during import and export. A mismatch in those settings can make an otherwise valid mesh arrive rotated or at an unexpected size.

- If it faces the wrong way: Review the Forward and Up axis mapping used for export, then reopen the OBJ in the destination application.
- If its dimensions are wrong: Check the import scale, scene-unit setting, and export scale. Compare a known measurement in the receiving application instead of assuming both programs interpret units identically.
- If the surface looks wrong: Check whether normals and UVs were exported, whether the correct objects were selected, and whether material or image sidecars are available. These controls can explain differences in appearance without establishing that the mesh itself changed.
Can I convert STL to OBJ in PrusaSlicer?
PrusaSlicer can export models on a plate as STL or OBJ, so it is a convenient option when the model is already loaded there and detailed material or scene controls are unnecessary. Its ordinary model export is distinct from Export toolpaths as OBJ, which creates an OBJ representation of sliced toolpaths rather than converting the original STL surface.

What should I check if the OBJ looks different?
- Confirm that the intended object or objects were selected and that Selected Only was set as intended.
- Compare the mesh’s dimensions with a known measurement; check import and export scale and scene-unit settings.
- Check Forward/Up axis mapping if the orientation changed.
- Inspect normals and UV settings if shading or texture placement differs.
- Keep the OBJ, MTL, and referenced image files together, and verify that their paths resolve on the receiving computer.
- If import was suspicious or the STL may be corrupt, try mesh validation and inspect the imported result.
