To edit ProRes RAW footage in an app that cannot use it as needed, open and process the original in a ProRes RAW-capable application, then export an intermediate codec your destination app supports. Keep the camera originals: a transcode is processed picture data, not another RAW original, so it does not preserve the same latitude for later RAW adjustments.
Choose between native ProRes RAW and a rendered intermediate
First decide what the receiving app needs to do. If it can import ProRes RAW on your operating system and version, native import avoids making an intermediate. If it cannot, or you need a more broadly compatible editing file, process the footage in a capable app and render a new file for the destination.

| Workflow | What it gives you | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Import ProRes RAW directly | Work from the camera original and retain access to supported source controls. | Confirm support for the exact app version, OS, GPU/render backend, and required decoder. A general product listing does not establish that every release or platform supports every task. |
| Render an intermediate | A processed file in a format the destination editor can use. | Choose a supported codec and verify color, frame rate, resolution, audio, and any alpha-channel needs. The rendered image is no longer a RAW original. |
ProRes 422-family formats, ProRes 4444, and DNxHR are examples to investigate, not universal recommendations. The right choice depends on the destination app and OS, the required quality and file size, and whether transparency is needed. Blackmagic’s Resolve codec reference distinguishes decoding, encoding, and passthrough support; check the destination editor’s own format documentation rather than assuming a codec works everywhere: DaVinci Resolve 20 supported codec list.

Check ProRes RAW support and requirements
Adobe’s support page, updated September 30, 2026, lists Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and After Effects as applications that import ProRes RAW. Its platform requirements are specific, and apply to Adobe’s stated support rather than guaranteeing good performance on every computer: Adobe ProRes RAW support.
#1 Best Overall
- Super-bright, 1500nit, 5-inch HDR touchscreen display
- Camera control – manage start/stop, ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance
- Record in Apple ProRes or ProRes RAW direct from the camera sensor to CFexpress Type B media or external USB-C storage
- Supports ProRes RAW, ProRes RAW HQ, ProRes LT, 422 & 422 HQ
- File-compatible with all leading NLEs, including DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer
- macOS: Adobe requires the Metal renderer. The page lists macOS Catalina 10.15 or later; it separately describes Mojave 10.14.5 or later with Apple Pro Video Formats 2.1.1 or later installed.
- Windows: Adobe requires Apple’s ProRes RAW Decoder and supports decoding with CUDA or OpenCL rendering. Adobe recommends at least 4 GB of video memory for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards.
Before choosing a conversion app, confirm the installed version, operating system, rendering backend, and any required decoder or format installation. If you plan to stay in Resolve, distinguish playback from encoding: Blackmagic says Resolve 20.2 added support for playing Apple ProRes RAW, and the 20.2.1 notes report improved compatibility. Those notes do not establish that Resolve can export ProRes RAW or that every OS supports the same conversion workflow. Check the version-specific notes and OS-specific codec table: Blackmagic Design support notes and the Resolve 20 codec list. Apple also lists Resolve among products for ProRes RAW, which should be read alongside Blackmagic’s version and codec details: Apple’s authorized-products information.
Convert the footage in a controlled workflow
- Back up the camera originals. Keep the ProRes RAW media and its project settings even after making intermediates. You may need the originals if you later want to change RAW processing.
- Confirm the source app is ready. Check its ProRes RAW support for your app version and OS, along with GPU or renderer requirements and any decoder or Pro Video Formats installation.
- Test a representative clip. Verify that it decodes correctly and has the expected framing and frame rate. In Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and After Effects, Adobe identifies Exposure and ColorSpace controls for ProRes RAW.
- Set the intended image processing. Confirm the desired camera look, working color space, transfer function, and SDR or HDR delivery target before exporting. If a camera-maker ProRes RAW plug-in is available for your camera and app, Apple says it can provide camera-specific processing; the plug-in depends on metadata in the media, and camera or recorder firmware may need an update. See Apple’s ProRes RAW white paper.
- Export a short test intermediate. Select a codec, bit depth, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and color space accepted by the destination editor. Open the test there and check playback and color before converting the full set.
- Review difficult shots before batching. Include examples with highlights, shadows, mixed lighting, and any shot that depends on a camera-specific look. This helps reveal processing or tone-mapping differences before they affect a larger batch.
Preserve the intended color and dynamic range
ProRes RAW is not simply a finished image waiting to be copied into another codec. Apple describes processing after decompression as including white balance, demosaicing, color conversion, and exposure adjustment. Those choices become part of the rendered intermediate rather than remaining the same adjustable RAW data.

Plan for the delivery target as well as the source. Apple notes that producing SDR from ProRes RAW’s HDR-capable source requires tone mapping. A clip that looks acceptable in the conversion app may look different in the editor if the working color space or SDR/HDR interpretation is mismatched. Confirm the color settings on both sides and inspect the exported test in the receiving application.

A successful export proves that the source app produced a file; it does not by itself prove that the destination interprets it as intended. Codec support varies by app, version, OS, and task, while the official documentation cited here does not establish comparative conversion speed, file size, or image-quality benchmarks. Validate the workflow with your own representative footage and the destination application’s format documentation.
