How to Convert PNG to JPG on Windows 11: 5 Practical Methods

Paint is the easiest way to save an existing PNG as a JPEG in Windows 11. These five workflows also cover transparent images, Office graphics, screenshots, and Paint.NET.

For an existing PNG, the simplest Windows 11 option is Paint: open the image, choose Save as, select JPEG, and save a new copy. The other routes are for specific cases—an image inside an Office document, an on-screen capture, or editing in Paint.NET—rather than five equivalent built-in converters. Keep the PNG if you need its transparency or original lossless image data.

Choose the method that fits your image

Method Best for New install? What it exports
Paint An existing PNG file No A JPEG copy using Paint’s save-format choice
Paint with a background decision A PNG with transparent areas No A JPEG copy; transparent pixels cannot remain transparent
Office: Save as Picture A graphic embedded in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel No, if Office is already available The selected graphic as JPEG
Snipping Tool and Paint A screenshot or visible on-screen content No A captured image saved as JPEG in Paint
Paint.NET Someone already using it or needing more editing tools Yes, unless already installed A JPEG file; the app also supports PNG

Microsoft says Paint can save images in formats including JPEG and PNG. Its save dialog labels can vary with app updates. Microsoft’s Paint guide describes choosing a format when saving.

1. Convert an existing PNG in Paint

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the PNG and choose Open with > Paint. If Paint is not listed, open Paint from Start and use File > Open to browse to the image.
  2. In Paint, choose File > Save as, then select JPEG picture or the JPEG option shown in your version.
  3. Choose a destination and enter a new filename. Check that the format is JPEG, then select Save.

This saves a JPEG copy and leaves the original PNG available. Selecting JPEG in the save or export format menu matters: changing only the filename extension from .png to .jpg does not convert the image data. Microsoft lists PNG and JPEG as separate image formats and extensions. See Microsoft’s list of file formats supported by Windows.

2. Convert a transparent PNG without losing the background you want

JPEG does not preserve transparent pixels. If the PNG is a logo, icon, or cutout with transparent areas, decide what should appear behind it before saving as JPEG. In Paint, add or choose a background as needed, then use Save as > JPEG picture and save a separate file. Do not assume the app’s default background will be the color you want; inspect the image before saving.

Microsoft describes PNG as a format that can support transparency and JPEG as suited to pictures with many colors. If transparency or the PNG’s original lossless data matters, retain the PNG rather than treating the JPEG as a replacement. Microsoft’s picture-format guidance explains the formats’ different uses.

3. Export a graphic embedded in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel

Use this route when the item you need is an illustration or picture inside an Office document—not as a general converter for any PNG on your computer.

4. Save a screenshot as JPEG with Snipping Tool and Paint

Use this only when you want a screenshot or an image as it appears on screen. It captures screen content; it is not the right way to convert an existing PNG when you need to preserve its original pixel data.

  1. Open Snipping Tool from Start and capture the visible area you need.
  2. Open the captured snip in Paint using the Paint editing option in Snipping Tool.
  3. In Paint, choose File > Save as > JPEG picture, select a destination and filename, and save.

The exact Snipping Tool controls may differ between versions. Microsoft’s guidance covers saving a snip and opening it in Paint. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

5. Use Paint.NET if you already need a desktop editor

Paint.NET is an optional third-party editor, not a requirement for a straightforward conversion. Its documentation lists JPEG and PNG support and compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you already use it, open the PNG and use the app’s save or export format choice to create a JPEG copy; the precise interface can vary by version. Paint.NET’s documentation provides its current format and application information.

Why Photos is not listed as a conversion method

Microsoft documents that Photos supports JPEG and PNG and includes image-editing features, but the cited guidance does not describe a workflow for exporting an arbitrary PNG as a user-selected JPEG. Opening both formats is not by itself proof that Photos can convert between them. Microsoft’s Photos editing guidance describes its editing features.
