Choose an MP3 bitrate
Follow the target device or service’s specification if it provides one. If no destination requirement is given, Audacity’s export guide calls 128 kbps a safe default for speech and 256 kbps for music. Higher bitrate generally means a larger MP3 file, but the conversion still does not retain FLAC’s lossless representation. Keep the FLAC source if you need an archival copy or expect to edit the audio again. [Audacity features]
Convert FLAC to MP3 with Audacity
- Open Audacity and import the FLAC file. The manual describes importing FLAC and other common audio formats. [Audacity import guide]
- Make any edits you need, such as trimming the start or end.
- Choose File → Export Audio. Menu wording can vary slightly by version.
- In the export dialog, select MP3, choose the destination and filename, and set the bitrate according to the destination’s requirements or the guidance above.
- Export the file, then play the MP3 and check that it is the intended length and that its tags or cover art are present if you need them.

Convert FLAC to MP3 with fre:ac

- Install fre:ac for your operating system using the project’s current download instructions.
- Add the FLAC file in the application and select MP3 as the output format.
- Choose an output folder and any available encoding settings appropriate to your destination.
- Start the conversion and play the resulting MP3 to verify it.
For multiple files, check the current application interface and guide for its queue or batch workflow; the cited project pages do not establish a batch limit or promise that every metadata field transfers unchanged.

Check the converted file
After conversion, listen to the MP3 and confirm that the file opens in the target app or device. Inspect the track title, artist, album information, and cover art if these matter to you. Do not assume tags or artwork transfer unchanged: verify the output because behavior can depend on the tool and file.
