For a faithful image of a word-processing document, spreadsheet, presentation, or PDF, first export it to PDF, then rasterize each PDF page to PNG or JPEG. This two-step workflow preserves the page layout more reliably than trying to turn different document formats directly into images, and it works for a whole document or a selected page range.
Choose a workflow that fits your document
There is no single conversion procedure for every file type and operating system. For files created in an office application, use that application to export a PDF, then use an image tool to render the PDF pages. This separates layout handling from image conversion: the office application lays out the pages, and the rasterizer creates image files.

Export an office document to PDF

Open the source file in the application used to create or edit it. Check that page breaks, margins, fonts, tables, and images look right before exporting.

In LibreOffice, open the PDF export options and choose whether to export all pages, specified pages, or a selection. The exact controls and available options can vary with the document type and application version.

Choose the PDF image settings. LibreOffice offers lossless compression and JPEG compression controls, including quality and target image resolution. JPEG quality is a trade-off: lower quality can reduce file size but discards pixel information and can introduce visible artifacts.

Export the PDF, then open or inspect it to confirm the intended pages and layout are present before converting it to images.

The Document Foundation’s LibreOffice 25.2 Getting Started Guide says that resolutions at or below 100 DPI may be sufficient for computer-screen viewing, while print may call for at least 300 or 600 DPI depending on printer capability. These are guide recommendations, not universal requirements. Higher resolution creates more pixels and generally increases file size.

Rasterize PDF pages with ImageMagick
ImageMagick can render PDF input to image formats, but it requires Ghostscript to read PDF files. Install ImageMagick and Ghostscript for your operating system before running a conversion. Refer to the ImageMagick format reference for PDF support and rendering notes, and the ImageMagick command-line options for density and page-related options.
A basic command to render all pages as PNG files is:
magick -density 150 input.pdf page.png
The density setting affects how the PDF is rendered into pixels. The example uses 150 DPI as a starting value, not a universal recommendation. For print-oriented output, choose a resolution appropriate to the intended printer and document; for screen use, a lower resolution may be adequate. Review the resulting pixel dimensions and readability rather than relying on the number alone.

PDF page selectors are zero-based in ImageMagick: [0] refers to the first page. Check the ImageMagick documentation for the syntax applicable to the version installed if you need a range or a different selection.
Choose PNG, JPEG, and resolution deliberately
PNG for text and crisp edges
PNG is a sensible default for text-heavy pages, diagrams, and line art when avoiding lossy compression matters. It can preserve sharp edges without the compression artifacts that JPEG may introduce.
JPEG when smaller files matter
JPEG can be useful for pages dominated by photographs or when smaller files are more important than perfect pixel preservation. Compression may make text edges and fine detail look worse, especially at lower quality settings.

Choose a rendering resolution based on whether the image is intended for a screen, print, or another downstream system. More DPI means more pixels for the same physical page size, which can improve detail but also increases image dimensions and storage needs. Avoid treating any one DPI value as universally correct.

ImageMagick notes that only some image formats—including JPEG, PNG, and TIFF—can store resolution metadata. Its -resample option changes pixel dimensions to preserve rendered physical size at a specified resolution; it is not the same as merely changing metadata. See the ImageMagick command-line options reference.
Check page boundaries and output quality
ImageMagick uses a PDF’s MediaBox by default. A PDF may also have a smaller CropBox or TrimBox that represents the intended visible or trimmed page boundary. If the default rendering includes unwanted margins or content, configure the appropriate box using the options documented by ImageMagick, then inspect the result.
- Confirm that every expected PDF page produced an image and that files are in the correct order.
- Check page edges for clipped content, extra margins, or unwanted marks.
- Zoom in on small text, thin lines, tables, and diagrams at the image’s intended display size.
- Compare the images with the PDF, especially if the source includes unusual fonts, transparency, or complex layout.
- Check file dimensions and sizes against the needs of the destination.
Common conversion problems
ImageMagick cannot read the PDF
PDF reading requires Ghostscript. Install it and ensure ImageMagick can use it; then retry. The ImageMagick format reference describes PDF as a supported input format with this dependency: ImageMagick Image Formats.

The image has unexpected margins or clipped content
ImageMagick renders the MediaBox by default. If the document’s CropBox or TrimBox is the intended boundary, select that box using the documented option and render again. Inspect the page edges after changing the setting.

Text looks soft or pixelated
The PDF may have been rendered at too low a density for the intended display or print size. Render again at a suitable density and compare both readability and file size. Higher density does not repair layout errors in the source PDF.
JPEG output has artifacts
JPEG is lossy. Increase its quality setting or use PNG where preserving text edges and line art is more important than reducing file size.
Text is no longer selectable
That is expected: a rasterized page is an image, not structured document text. Keep the original document or PDF if you need searchable text, accessibility structure, or editable content.
