To save an invoice webpage as a PDF with PDFShift, send its URL as the source to PDFShift’s PDF conversion endpoint, authenticate with your API key in the X-API-Key header, then save the binary response as a .pdf file. This captures a rendered version of the page; PDFShift does not validate the invoice or determine whether it meets GST requirements.
Convert an invoice URL to a PDF file

PDFShift’s Make guide documents the filename-based route: provide an existing URL or raw HTML, include a filename, then use a following HTTP download step to fetch the generated file. For a publicly reachable invoice page, use its full URL as source. Confirm that the URL opens to the intended invoice rather than a portal landing page, expired-link notice, or redirect that requires an interactive browser session.

Invoice behind a login
PDFShift’s Make guide describes authentication, cookies, and custom HTTP headers as options for accessing private pages. Provide only the session or authentication details needed to access your own invoice, and handle them as credentials. The available documentation does not guarantee that every portal’s login flow will work; a portal relying on interactive steps may still render incomplete content or block conversion. Inspect the resulting PDF for missing invoice details.
Check the PDF and understand its limits
PDFShift loads the source, converts the rendered page, and returns a generated PDF as binary data. That process preserves a representation of what the service could access and render at conversion time. Check that the downloaded file opens and includes the expected invoice information before you store or route it.

Converting a webpage is not a check of invoice authenticity, GST compliance, or statutory record-keeping suitability. The cited PDFShift materials describe conversion mechanics, not Indian GST legal requirements; use the appropriate official guidance or a qualified adviser for those questions.
Troubleshooting conversion problems
- The request is rejected or unauthorized: check that the API key is present and sent as
X-API-Key. PDFShift’s Help Center says API-key authentication moved to this header on 2025-05-06; an absent key can leave a request unauthenticated and result in a watermark. Confirm the current authentication instructions in PDFShift’s documentation. - The PDF shows a login page or lacks invoice fields: PDFShift may not have access to the same session as your browser. Check the source URL and configure the necessary supported authentication, cookies, or headers; then inspect the output. Portal-specific compatibility is not guaranteed.
- The saved file is not a usable PDF: check the HTTP status before writing the body, and ensure your code handles the response as binary bytes. With the filename-based workflow, use the returned temporary URL in a download step rather than treating the JSON response itself as the PDF.
- The PDF is a watermarked result: verify that the API key is actually reaching the endpoint in the
X-API-Keyheader, rather than being omitted or sent using an outdated authentication method.
