Yes, you can stream in 4K on YouTube Live. Your encoder sends YouTube one live input at the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you choose; YouTube then transcodes it into multiple viewer formats. For 2160p, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends normal latency, not low latency. A successful 4K broadcast therefore depends on compatible equipment, a reliable upload connection and a representative test—not on sending viewers a separate adaptive-bitrate ladder.
What adaptive bitrate streaming means for a YouTube creator
There are two sides to the stream: ingest, the video your encoder sends to YouTube, and delivery, the versions YouTube makes available to viewers. You choose a single ingest configuration. YouTube automatically transcodes the live input into multiple output formats for people watching on different devices and networks. Its HLS documentation likewise says the encoder does not need to send separate bitrates for different resolutions because YouTube handles that transcoding.

In practical terms, do not build or upload your own multi-rendition bitrate ladder just to serve viewers at different connection speeds. Choose a sound ingest configuration for your source and available upload capacity; YouTube generates the viewer-side variants.

| Ingest resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommendation | AV1 or H.265 range |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 8–35 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 10–40 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube’s English encoder guidance accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication date. Its localized pages have shown differing table layouts and H.264 figures, so check the current settings page for your region and encoder before committing to a value. Match the bitrate to the ingest codec, resolution and frame rate; do not treat the AV1/H.265 ranges as a single target that applies to every stream.
Core encoder choices
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder to the resolution and frame rate your source and workflow can actually deliver. The cited guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec and protocol: YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, subject to the selected ingestion workflow and encoder.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR in this guidance and says AV1 is not supported for HDR there.
Is 4K YouTube Live low latency?
No. YouTube’s encoder settings page says 2160p does not have a low-latency option and is optimized for quality at normal latency. The LiveBroadcasts API documentation also says ultra-low latency does not support resolutions above 1080p. If live audience interaction is central to the show, prioritize a lower-resolution low- or ultra-low-latency configuration rather than assuming a 4K stream can provide both.

Choose an ingestion protocol for your workflow
Protocol affects transport encryption, latency characteristics, codec support and encoder compatibility. No protocol is universally best for image quality: the result also depends on the encoder, codec and bitrate.

|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Encrypted RTMP transport; can be used with normal, low or ultra-low latency settings depending on broadcast configuration. | A practical general-purpose choice when your encoder supports it. The selected resolution still constrains which latency modes are available. |
| HLS | Encrypted; supports H.264 and HEVC in YouTube’s HLS guide. It uses a single encoded input stream and YouTube creates viewer renditions. | Designed for high-quality and high-resolution contribution; segment-based delivery generally has higher latency. YouTube recommends 1–4 second segments and caps them at 5 seconds. Shorter segments may reduce latency but can increase rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency. |
| DASH | YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 and VP9 support and says DASH is not suitable for ultra-low latency. | Use it only if your encoder and contribution workflow support it; like HLS, it is segment-based and not intended for ultra-low latency. |
Check YouTube’s current protocol and encoder documentation against your equipment before choosing a workflow, particularly for H.265, AV1, HDR or 4K contribution.

Plan upload capacity before you go live
The usable upload connection—not the download speed advertised for your plan—sets a practical ceiling. YouTube says total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; if using primary and backup streams, include both in the calculation before adding that margin.
- Measure outbound upload speed under conditions similar to the broadcast, not only when the network is idle.
- Account for other people and devices using the same connection during the event.
- Add together the bitrate of every stream you will send, including a backup stream if configured.
- Keep total stream bitrate within the tested upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% room above it.
- Prefer a reliable connection and re-test if network conditions or the production setup change.
A nominally sufficient speed test is not proof of a stable live connection. Congestion or interruptions can disrupt the stream, so test at the time and place you expect to broadcast.

Set up and rehearse the actual broadcast
- Choose the latency goal. Decide whether real-time interaction matters more than 2160p. YouTube’s 4K path is normal latency; for low or ultra-low latency, choose a compatible lower-resolution configuration.
- Confirm the signal chain. Verify that the camera or other source, encoder and YouTube ingestion workflow all support the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and protocol. A 4K-capable camera alone does not establish that the full chain can encode and send 4K.
- Configure ingest settings. Select the resolution, frame rate and codec, then use the matching bitrate guidance above. Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, never exceeding 4 seconds.
- Check network capacity. Measure outbound bandwidth, account for competing use and preserve the recommended headroom, including any backup stream.
- Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, rather than relying on a static color bar. Watch the stream-health indicators and correct problems before the event.
- Recheck volatile settings. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations and supported workflows can change. Consult the current encoder settings page for your language or region before a high-stakes broadcast.
Troubleshooting 4K live streams
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| 4K or 2160p is unavailable with the selected low-latency setting | YouTube does not offer low latency for 2160p in its current encoder guidance. | Use normal latency for 4K, or switch to a supported lower resolution if low or ultra-low latency is essential. |
| Stream health worsens or the stream drops | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the connection is contended. | Measure outbound speed during realistic use, reduce total stream bitrate if needed, account for all streams and preserve headroom. Test again with other network users and devices accounted for. |
| Encoder settings do not match the planned 4K output | The source, encoder or destination workflow may not support the selected resolution, frame rate, codec or protocol. | Check each link in the signal chain and use a setting combination accepted by the encoder and YouTube workflow. |
| Viewers report buffering or an inconsistent experience | Network disruption or an ingest configuration that the connection cannot sustain can affect the broadcast; viewer networks also vary. | Review YouTube stream health, test the complete show with motion and audio, and verify that upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube creates viewer formats, but that does not eliminate source-side or network problems. |
| HDR is not working as expected | The selected codec may not match YouTube’s stated HDR guidance. | For HDR, check YouTube’s current guidance and use H.265/HEVC as recommended there; the cited guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks still matter
Technical settings do not grant rights to the video, music or other material in a broadcast. Before going live, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for all included content and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies. A technically healthy stream can still face restrictions for policy or rights reasons.
