Use wkhtmltoimage input.html output.png to render a local HTML file as a PNG. The command-line renderer uses Qt WebKit, so check the output carefully—especially if the page depends on modern CSS or JavaScript. Convert a local HTML file to PNG
- Install
wkhtmltoimageand confirm that the executable is available in your shell’sPATH. - In the directory containing the file, run:
wkhtmltoimage input.html output.png
Replace the names with your input and destination paths. You can use full paths if the files are in different directories. - Open
output.pngand check its dimensions, fonts, images, and page content.

Set the image format, size, crop, and render timing
The command reference documents options for choosing an output format, setting screen dimensions, cropping, and waiting for a JavaScript window status. Exact behavior can depend on the installed build and the page, so inspect the local help and verify the resulting image before using a command in automation.
- Format: Use
--formatwhen you want to specify the image format explicitly. The output filename extension can also indicate the intended format. - Width and height: Use
--widthand--heightto set screen dimensions. Width is a guide unless strict-width behavior is selected. - Crop: Use
--crop-x,--crop-y,--crop-w, and--crop-hto specify crop coordinates and dimensions. - JavaScript readiness: Use
--window-statusto wait for a requested JavaScript window status before rendering.
For example, a fixed-width render can be requested with wkhtmltoimage --width 1200 input.html output.png, where supported by the installed binary. Confirm the behavior of width and any crop settings with that binary’s help before relying on them in a repeatable workflow.

Check your installation and rendering engine
Run wkhtmltoimage --help to inspect available flags and wkhtmltoimage --version to identify the installed version. Builds and package references differ: Ubuntu Jammy’s manpage identifies its packaged version as 0.12.6-2; that is specific to the Jammy package reference, not a universal version claim.
The project describes wkhtmltoimage as a headless command-line renderer using Qt WebKit. Its repository was archived by its owner on January 2, 2023. For a new long-lived system, weigh that maintenance status and the renderer’s engine compatibility against your page’s CSS and JavaScript needs. The available documentation establishes the engine and archive status but does not benchmark it against current alternatives.

Use Python with the imgkit wrapper
The Python package imgkit provides a wrapper for converting local HTML files, including examples that request PNG output. It still depends on the wkhtmltoimage executable, so installing the Python wrapper alone is not enough. Consult the imgkit documentation for its usage examples and confirm that the binary is installed and accessible.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Command not found: Install the executable or add its location to
PATH. Check withwkhtmltoimage --version. - Unexpected image dimensions or crop: Review the width, height, and crop options supported by your local build, then inspect the output PNG. Width can be a guide rather than a strict limit unless strict-width behavior is selected.
- Page content is missing or incomplete: Check whether the page relies on JavaScript or delayed content. The command reference includes
--window-statusfor waiting on a specified JavaScript window status; verify the page’s readiness behavior and the option’s support in your build. - Fonts or images look wrong: Compare the rendered file with the source page and confirm that the resources the HTML needs are available to the renderer. The cited command documentation does not establish one universal fix for resource-loading differences.
- An option is rejected or behaves differently: Package builds can differ. Use
wkhtmltoimage --helpandwkhtmltoimage --versionon the machine doing the conversion, and test the resulting PNG.
