Use Playwright’s page.pdf() with displayHeaderFooter: true and a footer template containing pageNumber and totalPages. The example below saves an A4 PDF with a numbered footer. Playwright generates PDFs with print CSS by default; choose screen media first if that is what you need.
Generate a numbered PDF with Playwright
Install Playwright in your project and use the browser binaries associated with that Playwright version. The script navigates to a page, writes the PDF to page.pdf, and closes the browser even if capture fails.

})();Replace https://example.com with the page you want to capture. The footer displays values such as “1 / 4”: Playwright substitutes the current page number and total page count for the two documented classes.
How page numbering and footer templates work
Header and footer output is disabled unless you set displayHeaderFooter: true. Add a footerTemplate for numbering at the bottom or a headerTemplate for content at the top. The available substitution classes are pageNumber, totalPages, date, title, and url.

Templates are separate from the page’s normal document styling: scripts inside them are not evaluated, and page styles do not apply. Keep the template self-contained and use inline styles for its appearance. The example places the number at the right; change its inline alignment or text if your layout calls for another presentation.
Set margins and paper size deliberately
PDF margins default to zero. Specify enough top or bottom margin to keep a header or footer clear of the page content; the example uses 20 mm vertically and 15 mm horizontally as adjustable choices, not as required values. If the footer is crowded or overlaps content, increase the bottom margin and review the page’s print layout.

format chooses a paper size; Letter is the API default, and A4 and A5 are among the documented formats. When format is set, it takes priority over width and height. If the document defines its own CSS @page size and that should control output, set preferCSSPageSize: true; otherwise, content is scaled to fit the PDF paper size.

page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default, which is usually appropriate for documents designed for printing. To render the page with its screen styles instead, emulate screen media before generating the PDF:

For color-sensitive output, note that PDF generation modifies colors for printing by default. The API reference points to the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are needed.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No page numbers appear: Confirm
displayHeaderFooter: trueis set and the template uses the exact classespageNumberandtotalPages. - The footer overlaps the page: Margins default to zero. Increase the bottom margin for a footer, or the top margin for a header, and check the resulting layout.
- The PDF looks different from the browser: PDF generation uses print media by default. Call
page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' })beforepage.pdf()if screen styling is intended. - Background colors or images are missing: Set
printBackground: trueif the PDF needs page background graphics. - CSS page dimensions are ignored: Set
preferCSSPageSize: truewhen CSS@pagesizing should take priority. - A browser executable is missing or incompatible: Playwright versions require specific browser binary versions. Use the binaries associated with the installed Playwright version and consult documentation matching that version if behavior or option support differs.
