This Node.js example navigates to one listing URL and saves a viewport screenshot as WebP. Install Playwright and its browser first, then run the script with a URL and a stable listing ID:

Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: A practical default for uniform directory cards; it captures the visible browser area.
- Element: Capture a particular page element when the site’s main content is consistently identifiable. Selector differences across unrelated company sites can make this brittle.
- Full page: Use when the whole page matters. Long pages create thumbnails with very different content and proportions, so they may be harder to compare in a card grid.

Store, display, and refresh images
Keep card framing predictable
Use the same capture viewport and display ratio for every listing, then inspect representative results at the size visitors will actually see. A viewport shot often suits a directory card better than a full-page capture, but the directory’s design should decide the final dimensions and crop behavior.
Choose an image format based on the result
PNG, JPEG, and WebP are available with Playwright. Modern formats such as WebP and AVIF may compress better than PNG or JPEG, which can reduce file size and download time; the result varies by image and delivery context. Test at the card’s display size so compression does not make text or interface details hard to read. web.dev’s image-format guidance discusses modern formats.
Use a stable key and an explicit refresh policy
Use a directory listing ID as the storage key so a company rename does not orphan its image. Generate a thumbnail when a listing is created and provide an operator-triggered refresh path. Sites change or become unreachable, so review captures periodically or when a listing is reported as outdated. Keep capture jobs and refresh scheduling separate from the web request that accepts or displays a listing; a slow third-party website should not make directory pages wait for browser navigation.
Protect the renderer from unsafe URLs
A server that opens URLs supplied by directory submitters can be abused to make requests to destinations the submitter chooses. OWASP recommends validating destinations, preferring allowlists when the expected hosts are known, and restricting network access. - When practical, accept or derive a hostname and path under a controlled validation policy rather than trusting an arbitrary complete URL.
- Apply network-layer egress restrictions so the browser cannot reach sensitive internal services or addresses.
- Run captures in a worker with strict timeouts, resource limits, and a controlled retry queue. These are prudent implementation safeguards for browser jobs, not fixed settings prescribed by OWASP.
- Review both the image and any extracted metadata after capture. A browser can successfully render a parked domain, a 404 page, or unrelated content.

- The navigation times out: A target may be slow, unavailable, or waiting on resources that never settle. Keep a finite timeout, record the failure, and retry through a controlled queue rather than holding up a directory request.
- The image is blank or shows a loading state: The site may need more time or depend on client-side rendering. Consider waiting for a meaningful selector or a short, bounded delay, then inspect the output. Do not wait indefinitely for all network activity on pages with persistent connections.
- The thumbnail shows the wrong content: The URL may redirect, be parked, or return a 404 or bot-check page. Verify the final page and screenshot before treating the capture as a valid company preview.
- Images do not fit the cards: Check that all captures use the intended viewport and that the front end applies the same display ratio and crop rule. Choose viewport or full-page capture according to the intended card content.
- Capture workers make unexpected requests: Treat this as a URL-validation and egress-control issue. Tighten destination validation and network restrictions before accepting more submissions.
- Images load slowly for visitors: Check file size and delivery format at the actual card size. WebP or AVIF may reduce transfer size, but compare the visual result for your particular pages rather than assuming a fixed saving.
