The key choice is whether you need a readable document made from accessible HTML or a PDF that preserves the page’s browser-rendered appearance. For the first, convert HTML to a Google Docs document and export it as PDF; for the second, render the page to PDF first, then upload that PDF as binary data using n8n’s Google Drive node.
Choose the right conversion route
Google Drive’s supported conversions include HTML to Google Docs, and n8n’s Google Drive integration can export Google Docs files as PDFs. That creates a document rendition; it is not a promise that a live site’s exact browser layout, scripts, or styling will be reproduced. Google’s Drive API guide describes HTML as a convertible format, while n8n’s Google Drive file operations documentation covers upload and export options.

In either route, first obtain the content or PDF, then configure Google Drive to upload a binary property. A plain HTTP fetch can miss pages that require login, block automated requests, or render content with JavaScript.
Build the workflow in n8n
- Start with a URL. Use a Manual Trigger while building, or a trigger that provides a URL for each run. Keep the URL in a consistent field so later nodes can reference it.
- Retrieve or render the page. For accessible static HTML, fetch the page content and pass it to the conversion path. If the page depends on JavaScript or needs to look like the browser view, use a browser-rendering step that returns a PDF file. The conversion component must actually produce the document or PDF; Google Drive’s upload action stores the output but does not render a webpage.
- Convert HTML to a Google Docs document when appropriate. In the Google Drive node, use the relevant upload/conversion configuration for HTML input. n8n documents a “Convert to Google Document” option; enabling it requires the Google Docs API to be enabled in Google API Console. Confirm the imported document before exporting.
- Export a Google Docs file as PDF. Use the Google Drive download/export operation and select PDF as the output format for a Google Docs file.
- Upload the resulting PDF. Add a Google Drive node, choose File → Upload, set the binary input field to the property produced by the preceding conversion step, provide a filename such as
webpage.pdf, and choose the destination drive and folder. The upload expects file data in the named binary property. - Check the result. Open a sample PDF and inspect whether the intended text, images, and page breaks are present. Conversion support alone does not establish layout fidelity.

Troubleshoot missing or poor PDFs
- The PDF is blank or incomplete: Check the data returned by the retrieval step. Authentication walls, request blocking, and client-side rendering can make an HTTP response differ from what a browser displays. Use a browser-rendering step if the page’s rendered content is necessary.
- The Drive upload fails or has no file: Verify that the preceding node outputs binary data and that the upload node’s binary property name matches it exactly. Also confirm the filename and destination drive or folder.
- “Convert to Google Document” does not work: Enable the Google Docs API in Google API Console as required by n8n’s documentation, then verify the source is suitable HTML.
- The PDF looks unlike the website: The HTML-to-Docs route is document conversion, not browser-faithful capture. Produce a PDF with a browser-rendering step before uploading it to Drive.
- Images, styles, or page breaks are wrong: Inspect the exported file and compare with the intended result. If presentation is important, change to a renderer that creates the PDF from the rendered page instead of expecting Drive upload or document export to repair layout.
Reliability and workflow considerations
Test representative pages before running at scale: include pages with images, long content, and any authentication or dynamic behavior relevant to your use case. Make sure each run handles both the conversion output and failures from retrieval or rendering, rather than uploading an empty or partial result. When an outside rendering service receives a page or its contents, evaluate its privacy and access implications as well as its current pricing.
