You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Intel NUC by playing the file through encoder software, then sending that live output to YouTube with your stream URL and stream key. The exact NUC model matters: confirm its processor, graphics and encoder support before choosing a resolution, frame rate or encoding method.

Before you start: confirm your channel and NUC

Check YouTube Live access

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16 under YouTube’s general eligibility rules. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and age requirements for live streaming.

Identify the exact NUC

“Intel NUC” covers different generations and configurations, so there is no universal minimum model or guaranteed output setting. Find the product code on the unit and check Intel’s technical specifications for that exact model. Intel documents Quick Sync hardware video encoding on particular NUC families, but capability is not identical across the range. The encoder software must also support the relevant hardware feature. Start with Intel Support and the specification page for your exact product; do not assume a feature based on the NUC name alone.

Prepare the prerecorded video and encoder

YouTube Live receives a live feed from an encoder; uploading a file as a normal YouTube video does not turn it into a live broadcast. Use encoder software on the NUC to play the file as a source and transmit its output. OBS is one possible software route, but playback and looping controls can vary by version. Confirm the controls in the version you install, and do a complete rehearsal rather than assuming the file will restart or loop unattended.

A Gigabit Ethernet port ensures stable, high-speed wired connections for those critical moments when WiFi just won't cut it.
  • [Versatile Ports & Compact Design] Despite its compact size (4.61 x 4.41 x 2.01 inches), the Intel NUC 13 is packed with a multitude of ports. It features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, an HDMI port, a mini DP port, and a side-mounted SD card slot. Whether you're connecting a second monitor, external storage, or a set of speakers, this device has got you covered.
  • Use a recording you have the rights to broadcast. A live presentation does not remove copyright obligations; review YouTube’s copyright guidance.
  • Check the source file’s resolution, frame rate, video codec and audio format before selecting encoder output. The NUC must decode the source and encode the outgoing stream at the same time.
  • Match output to the source and the exact NUC’s capabilities. Avoid choosing a higher resolution or frame rate simply because YouTube accepts it; the NUC and available upload capacity still have to sustain it.
  • If the program must repeat, test the transition from the end of the file back to the beginning, including audio, and confirm the encoder continues sending video.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect the NUC

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Select Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or use the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling creates an event page viewers can visit and lets them set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
  3. Choose the ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. HLS can support HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP, but it brings higher latency and additional encoder configuration. For ordinary SDR prerecorded playback, use the simpler RTMPS route unless your source and encoder give you a specific reason to use HLS. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol guidance.
  4. Set output and bitrate. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that the NUC can encode and your connection can sustain. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are in its encoder settings guide. Use the recommended bitrate for the selected output as a starting point, then verify the actual feed in a rehearsal; there is no single setting that fits every NUC, source file or connection.
  5. Start sending the feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder output, wait for the signal to appear in Live Control Room, and check both picture and sound before starting the event for viewers.

Test bandwidth, timing and playback before the event

Your upload connection must handle the stream continuously, not just reach a speed briefly. YouTube recommends at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the chosen stream bitrate. Its network guidance explains bitrate and connection considerations. If the upload connection fluctuates, choose a lower sustainable output rather than running at the limit.

  • Rehearse the full source on the NUC while the encoder is active. Check for dropped or repeated frames, audio/video sync drift, unexpected pauses and CPU or GPU overload.
  • Test the complete intended event behavior: one playthrough, a loop, or a longer scheduled broadcast. Do not assume the playback source will restart automatically.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and audio meters, and verify the stream reaches the expected event before sharing or starting it.
  • Use a reliable wired connection where practical and avoid competing uploads during the broadcast.

Start and monitor the live broadcast

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. This gives time to resolve connection or configuration problems while checking the preview. Once live, monitor audio and video quality throughout; a successful preview at the beginning does not guarantee that a long file or loop will continue correctly. When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • Go Live is unavailable: verify the channel, check for live-streaming restrictions, confirm age eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  • YouTube receives no signal: confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL is correct and the current stream key matches the event. If the key was reset, replace the saved key in the encoder.
  • Preview buffers or drops frames: compare the bitrate with stable upload capacity and YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and close other upload-heavy activity.
  • The NUC struggles or playback stutters: lower the encoding workload, use an encoder mode supported by the exact NUC and software, and test decoding and encoding together. Quick Sync availability depends on the model and software support.
  • Audio and video fall out of sync: check the source file and encoder audio settings, then rehearse the whole playback path. A short initial check may not reveal drift later in a long stream.
  • The video stops at the end: configure and test the playback source’s loop or restart behavior. YouTube receives only what the encoder continues to send.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want the NUC and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so the computer at home can be off. Every slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.

When a dedicated encoder may make sense

If you need scheduled prerecorded playback without keeping a computer on, YouTube’s encoder list includes the AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. It is a separate hardware option, not a required NUC accessory. Compare whether it meets your scheduling and source-format needs against using a NUC you already own; no universal NUC performance threshold or controlled comparison establishes which option is better for every setup. See YouTube’s encoder list.
