To convert a PSD to a transparent PNG in Photoshop, hide any background layer that should be transparent, then choose File > Export As, select PNG, and enable Transparency if the option is available. Export a separate PNG and keep the PSD as your editable master: PNG can retain transparent pixels, but it does not preserve Photoshop’s layers or editing structure.
Convert a PSD to a transparent PNG in Photoshop
- Check the layer stack. Open the PSD and hide or remove any opaque background layer that should not appear in the PNG. Keep the artwork and any intended semi-transparent shadows or edges visible. A checkerboard in Photoshop indicates empty pixels; a visible background layer will be included in the image.
- Keep the editable PSD. Save your working document as a PSD, then export a separate PNG for delivery. PSD retains Photoshop layers and effects; PNG is a single-layer raster image.
- Export the PNG. Choose File > Export As, select PNG, and enable Transparency when the option is offered and you need transparent pixels. Adobe says this setting generates a 32-bit asset. Its other Export As options include 8-bit output with “Smaller File” selected and 24-bit output when neither option is selected; those settings are not substitutes for checking whether transparency is enabled. - Inspect the exported file. Open or preview the PNG against both a light and a dark background. This helps reveal an unwanted opaque background or edge halos that may be hard to see against the viewer’s default canvas.
Adobe also documents a Save As route: choose File > Save As, select PNG, choose an interlace option, and confirm. Interlacing affects how the image appears while downloading, not whether its background is transparent; Adobe notes that the interlaced version has a larger final file size. Why does my PNG background look white?
- An opaque background was included. Return to the PSD and check whether a background layer or artboard background is visible. Hiding only the checkerboard display, or changing the file extension, does not make image pixels transparent.
- Transparency was not enabled for the export. In Export As, check the PNG settings and select Transparency when available.
- The viewer may show transparency as white. Some apps display transparent pixels against a white canvas. Check the PNG in a viewer that displays a checkerboard, or place it over a contrasting background.
- The PNG is flattened, but that is expected. A PNG can preserve transparent pixels while combining the visible image into one raster layer. It does not keep the PSD’s editable layers.
PNG supports transparency and lossless compression; JPEG does not support transparency. If the background must remain transparent, do not export as JPEG. Adobe explains the format differences in its Photoshop file formats overview.
Convert a PSD without Photoshop
Photopea
Open the PSD in Photopea, then choose File > Export As > PNG. Photopea distinguishes PSD, which preserves document structure, from PNG, which is intended for distribution. Text and other editable content exported to PNG are no longer available for direct editing. See Photopea’s opening and saving guide.

GIMP
For alpha transparency in GIMP, the image needs an alpha channel; then export it as PNG. GIMP’s 2.10 transparency guide explains the alpha-channel step. Its 3.2 PNG export guide notes that exporting a multi-layer image to a single-layer format cannot preserve color values in transparent pixels. It also describes PNG8 as having only two transparency levels—transparent or opaque—so choose an export mode with full alpha for smooth semi-transparent edges.
With any alternative editor, check that the PSD opens as intended before exporting. Features such as effects, smart objects, fonts, and masks may not render identically across applications; the basic export workflows do not guarantee full compatibility for every PSD.

What PSD-to-PNG conversion keeps—and what it does not
PNG can carry transparent pixels and preserve the visible raster appearance of the export, including semi-transparent edges when full alpha is used. It does not preserve the PSD’s complete editable structure, such as its layers and live text. Keep the PSD if you may need to revise the design; use the PNG as the delivery copy.
For the Photoshop workflow, the key distinction is between the document’s contents and the export setting: the artwork must contain transparent pixels where desired, and the PNG export must retain them. A white-looking preview alone does not establish whether those pixels are opaque or merely displayed on white.
