To stop videos from autoplaying on X, go to Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage. In the mobile app, open Video autoplay and choose Never; on x.com, open Autoplay and choose Never. The app and website settings are separate, so change both if you use both.
Choose an autoplay setting for your device
X provides different autoplay choices on its mobile apps and website. The labels vary slightly between iOS and Android.

- Open the X app or x.com and navigate to the relevant path in the table.
- Open Video autoplay in the app or Autoplay on x.com.
- Select Never.
- If you use X in both the app and a browser, repeat these steps on each. X says the preferences are independent: a choice on one surface does not automatically set the other.
Allow autoplay only on Wi-Fi
In the iOS or Android app, choose Only on Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi only, respectively. The website choices documented by X do not include a Wi-Fi-only option.

Where the autoplay setting applies
X says native videos and GIFs autoplay in timelines, Moments, Explore, and across X. Its instructions say changing the setting can stop autoplay in the timeline, Moments, and Explore. The documented guidance does not establish that this preference controls every embedded video or third-party player, so an external player may have its own controls. See X’s video-setting guidance.
Use Data Saver to reduce automatic media loading
X describes Data Saver as a way to reduce data use by controlling which media downloads in real time. With Data Saver enabled, images load in lower quality and videos do not autoplay. X documents Data Saver and media controls in its Android and iOS help pages.
On Android, X also mentions controls for high-quality images, video, and video autoplay. The help information does not specify the exact video-quality settings, playback resolutions, or per-video resolution choices. It also does not quantify how much data these controls save. Treat them as ways to manage loading behavior, not as a guarantee of a particular resolution or data reduction.

Which setting should you choose?
- Choose Never if you want videos not to start automatically on that app or website.
- Choose Wi-Fi only in the mobile app if you want autoplay when connected to Wi-Fi but not cellular or mobile data.
- Use Data Saver if you also want X to avoid autoplaying videos and to load images in lower quality.
- Check each surface separately if you use both the X app and x.com, because their autoplay preferences do not sync.
