A requested window size is not a guarantee of identical page pixels across browsers, operating systems, or remote setups.
Choose what the screenshot should contain
Selenium offers distinct capture targets. Use the driver screenshot for the current browsing context, an element screenshot for one located component, and a browser-specific full-page API when you need the entire document.
| What you need | Capture method | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| The current browser view | Driver screenshot | Selenium documents screenshots of the current browsing context. |
| One component, such as a button, chart, or panel | Locate the element and take its screenshot | The captured target is the selected element, not the whole view. |
| The entire document | A full-page screenshot API supported by the browser and binding | The reviewed Python full-page methods are for Firefox. Java’s HasFullPageScreenshot interface is beta and lists FirefoxDriver as its known implementing class. Confirm support for your exact combination. |
These distinctions matter when judging quality: a correctly rendered component screenshot may still be the wrong evidence if the test expects the page view, and an ordinary driver screenshot should not be assumed to include content below the current view.
Set the window size before capture
Choose an explicit size rather than relying on the runner’s default. Selenium’s window-management documentation gives 1024 × 768 as a set-size example, and the Selenium 4.50.0 Python API documents set_window_size(width, height).
#1 Best Overall
Window size means the browser window size; it is not a promise that the page’s CSS viewport will have exactly those dimensions. Browser chrome and the execution environment can affect the relationship. Inspect the resulting image in your own local, CI, or remote-browser setup.
Capture screenshots with Python
This runnable example sets the window size, navigates to a page, and saves a PNG of the current browsing context. Install Selenium and configure a compatible browser and WebDriver before running it.
from selenium import webdriver
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1024, 768)
driver.get("https://example.com")
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
The window-sizing example uses Selenium’s documented 1024 × 768 value; it is an example setting, not a screenshot-quality benchmark. Python’s current-window screenshot API saves PNG files.
Rank #2
Capture a specific element
Locate the component first, then call the element’s screenshot method. This example waits for a CSS-selected element to exist before saving it.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1024, 768)
driver.get("https://example.com")
panel = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main"))
)
panel.screenshot("main.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace main with a selector for the element you need. A selector that matches no element, or an element that never becomes visible, prevents the capture step from completing.
Capture a full document in Firefox
The reviewed Selenium 4.50.0 Python Firefox API documents full-page methods including get_full_page_screenshot_as_file and save_full_page_screenshot. They are Firefox-specific in that API documentation; do not assume the same method is available in other browser bindings.

from selenium import webdriver
options = webdriver.FirefoxOptions()
driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1024, 768)
driver.get("https://example.com")
driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("full-page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
Firefox’s documented full-page family also includes file, binary, and base64 variants. The Java HasFullPageScreenshot interface is marked beta and lists FirefoxDriver as its known implementing class, so confirm its status and availability for the Java version and driver you use.
Make captures repeatable
A fixed size is only one input to rendering. For screenshot comparisons or test evidence, record the configuration that produced each image and examine actual output from the same kind of runner used in production.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Record the browser and browser-driver versions.
- Record the Selenium binding and version.
- Record the requested window dimensions and whether the target was the current view, an element, or the full document.
- Inspect the saved screenshot in the local, CI, or remote environment where the test will run.
The reviewed Selenium documentation does not promise identical viewport pixels across browser chrome, operating systems, or remote setups. Treat visual consistency as something to verify in your own environment, not something guaranteed solely by calling a particular size-setting method.

Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
The image has unexpected dimensions
Check that set_window_size(width, height) ran before capture, then inspect the output file and the effective browser view in the same runner. Do not assume requested window dimensions equal CSS viewport dimensions; browser chrome and remote execution can change the relationship.
The screenshot omits content below the visible page
The ordinary driver screenshot is for the current browsing context. If you need the entire document, use a full-page API supported by your specific browser and Selenium binding. The reviewed Python full-page methods are documented for Firefox; verify support before building a cross-browser test around them.
The component image is missing or capture fails
Confirm the locator matches the intended element and that it is present and visible before calling the element screenshot method. If the page renders the component asynchronously, wait for the element rather than capturing immediately after navigation.

A method shown in an example is unavailable
Check the language binding, Selenium version, and browser-specific API documentation for the method. Full-page capture is not universally available: the reviewed Java interface is beta and lists FirefoxDriver, while the Python full-page methods are in the Firefox API.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; you can turn each step off.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and whether the response was billed.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
