These are separate controls: silencing your own Android update notice is different again, and can make your shared location less accurate.
Which Google Maps control do you need?
Google Maps has several location-related controls that can sound alike but do different things. Choose based on what you want to stop, not just which notification you see:

| Control | Whose access or notifications it changes | Does live sharing continue? | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop sharing with a person | Removes that selected person’s access to your shared location | No, not with that person | Maps on mobile, or Location Sharing settings on a computer |
| Allow Location Sharing notifications | Stops other people from creating arrival or departure alerts about you; also turns off existing alerts they added | Yes, unless you stop sharing separately | Google Account Location Sharing settings |
| Google Location Sharing (you) Android notification | Hides the notice about your own shared-location updates on your Android device | Sharing may continue, but location refresh can be affected | Google Maps notification settings on Android |
| Stop sharing trip progress | Ends the temporary location and trip details shared during navigation | That trip-progress share ends when navigation ends or the destination is reached | Google Maps navigation |
The important distinction is whose control you are changing. The alert permission concerns other people’s ability to set arrival or departure alerts about you. The Android Google Location Sharing (you) category concerns a notice on your own device. Neither is the direct control for removing a specific viewer. If your goal is to end another person’s access, stopping sharing with that person is the direct control. Turning off a notification setting does not make you invisible and should not be treated as a substitute.

If you only dislike the persistent update notice on your Android phone, you can silence that category, but Google warns that location refresh may become inaccurate.

How to stop sharing your location with one person
Google’s Android instructions use the person’s profile in Location sharing. Stopping sharing for one person is separate from ending shares with everyone else.
- Open Google Maps on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Location sharing.
- Tap the profile of the person you want to remove.
- Tap Stop.
Google also provides a way to manage sharing with a specific person through Google Account settings. On a computer, open the account’s Location Sharing settings to find or hide another person and stop sharing. The Google help instructions cover both Android and computer; interface labels and placement can vary by platform.
Before you stop a share, make sure you have selected the intended person’s profile. The control is per person: stopping one share does not mean you have ended every other share from your account. If you cannot find the expected option in Maps, try the Google Account settings or computer interface, then confirm the selected person is no longer listed as someone with whom you are sharing.
What stopping sharing changes
Once sharing with that person has stopped, they no longer receive your live location through that share. Google says a recipient may be able to see your name and photo, your recent device location even when you are not using Google apps, your device’s battery state, and arrival or departure times if they have set up a Location Sharing notification. Those details are associated with location sharing; hiding a notification on your own phone is not the way to remove the recipient’s access. See Google’s Android Location Sharing guidance and Google Account settings guidance.
Stopping a share also stops the alerts associated with it. That is different from turning off the account-level permission that prevents people from creating alerts about you generally. If you later share your location again, check the permission state rather than assuming an alert setting has reset: Google says Allow Location Sharing notifications stays off even if sharing is stopped and restarted.
Stop sharing temporarily or only during a trip
When you create a location share, choose a duration rather than leaving it active indefinitely. The available duration options can depend on the account and how the share is created; use the choices shown in Maps for your account. If you only need to share for a short period, choosing a limited duration can avoid relying on remembering to end an ongoing share. If you need to revoke access earlier, return to the person’s profile and tap Stop.
Google also offers Share trip progress during car, walking, or bicycle navigation. That temporary share includes your destination, estimated arrival time, and current location, and ends when you reach the destination or stop navigation. It is intended for a trip, rather than as an ongoing replacement for Location sharing. Details are in Google’s Android and iPhone and iPad instructions.
Trip progress is useful when someone needs updates about one journey, including an estimated arrival time, rather than continuous access beyond the trip. Once navigation ends or the destination is reached, that trip-progress share ends. A regular Location sharing arrangement is different: it can continue according to the duration selected when the share was created, unless it expires or you stop it.

How arrival and departure alerts work
Location Sharing alerts are created by the person viewing your shared location. That person can set an alert for a place and choose whether to be notified when you arrive or leave. The alert feature is distinct from the act of sharing location: an alert can be disabled while sharing itself continues.
How a recipient adds an alert
- In Google Maps, open Location sharing and select the person who is sharing their location.
- Choose the option to add a notification.
- Select an address or a location on the map.
- Choose Arrival or Departure, then save the notification.
The person sharing their location receives an email and may also receive a push notification if Google Maps notifications are enabled. Google’s documented limit is up to five Location Sharing notifications for each person sharing their location with you. This is a feature limit, not a limit on how many people can share with you. See Google’s notification instructions.
The recipient chooses the place and the event they want to monitor. An arrival alert is for when the sharer reaches the selected address or map location; a departure alert is for when they leave it. The person who is sharing does not create these alerts for the viewer, and the alerts do not themselves grant a person access. The viewer must have access to the shared location for this feature to apply.

Can someone get an alert when you arrive or leave?
Yes, if they have access to your shared location and have added an arrival or departure notification for a place. You can prevent others from creating these alerts using the account-level permission described below. This does not itself stop location sharing with them.
How to stop others creating alerts about you
To disable arrival and departure notifications others have set for your location, open myaccount.google.com/locationsharing and switch off Allow Location Sharing notifications. Google says this turns off existing alerts other people added as well as preventing new ones. They are not notified that you have disabled alerts, and your location sharing can continue.
This is the control to use if your privacy concern is specifically alerts about your arrivals or departures, but you still want to share your live location. It is not a switch that hides your location from people who already have access. To end that access, stop sharing with each relevant person from their profile.
The setting remains off even if you later stop and restart location sharing. If you stop sharing with someone, the alerts associated with that share also stop. These behaviors are documented in Google Maps Help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the setting is missing or unavailable
Alert availability depends on how the location is shared and on the accounts involved. Google says arrival and departure notifications are unavailable for some accounts and for location shared by link. A feature may also be unavailable if the person sharing is offline, has an outdated app, is under 13 or the applicable age in their country, or the location is being viewed on the web or in Maps without signing in through a shared link. Google Maps notifications must be enabled for the sharer to receive the email or possible push notice associated with an alert. Check Google’s notification help page for the documented conditions.

Link-based sharing deserves particular attention: a recipient who opens a shared link is not necessarily using the signed-in Location sharing view that supports alerts. A missing alert option therefore does not always mean that Location sharing itself is broken. Check that both the sharing method and account are eligible, and that the app is current and the sharer is online.
How to turn off your own Android location-sharing notice
On Android, Google Maps has a notification category called Google Location Sharing (you). This is a notice on your own device about your shared-location updates; it is not the setting that prevents someone else from creating arrival or departure alerts, and it is not the control for stopping a particular share.
In Google Maps’ Android notification settings, find Google Location Sharing (you) and turn that notification off if you only want to silence the notice. Google warns that turning it off can stop your shared location from refreshing, so recipients may see an inaccurate location. If accuracy matters, leave this notice enabled and instead use the account permission to block alerts, or stop sharing with the relevant person. The precise route to notification settings may vary by Android device and Maps version; Google’s Android notification instructions explain how to manage Maps notifications.
Do not confuse this category with the notification a sharer may receive when somebody adds an alert about them. The Android category is a notice about your own shared-location updates. Turning it off can affect refresh accuracy, but does not remove a recipient or switch off their permission to create alerts. If a recipient says your location looks old after you silenced it, restore the category and check that the phone has an active internet connection and location is enabled.
Manage Google Maps Location sharing from a computer
Google says a live-location share must be started on a mobile device, but sharing settings can be managed from a computer. The computer interface lets you find or hide another person and stop sharing. That makes it useful for reviewing who is connected to your account or ending an existing share when your phone is not at hand; it is not the method for initiating a new live share. See Google’s computer instructions.
Google maintains separate instructions for Android, iPhone and iPad, and computer. The exact labels and available controls may differ across them. If you use an iPhone or iPad, follow the iOS steps rather than assuming an Android notification path applies. In particular, the Android-specific Google Location Sharing (you) notification category should not be assumed to appear in the same way on iPhone or iPad.
What you need for Location sharing to work
Location sharing is not available in every account or configuration. Google lists these prerequisites and restrictions:
- A Google Account and a mobile device.
- An active internet connection, device location enabled under Use location, and Find Hub.
- Availability in your country or region and eligibility based on the account’s age.
- For a Google Workspace account, the organization’s administrator may need to enable Location Sharing; the feature may not be available for the domain.
- For a supervised account, some settings may be managed by a parent or guardian.
These requirements and account limitations are described in Google Account Help, Google’s computer guidance, and the Android sharing instructions. If a control is missing, check whether your account is supervised or managed by your organization before assuming the app is malfunctioning.

These prerequisites are separate from the notification controls. Turning on device location or connecting to the internet can help Location sharing function, but will not by itself decide who can see you or whether somebody can set arrival and departure alerts. Conversely, disabling alerts does not remove the underlying sharing permission. Identify the missing function first, then check the relevant requirement: sharing availability, alert eligibility, or your own Maps notification category.

You cannot stop sharing with the person you selected
Confirm that you opened the person’s profile from Location sharing, not a general Maps notification. Try managing the share from Google Account settings or from the computer interface if the mobile app does not show the expected control. Google’s guidance provides platform-specific instructions for Android and computer. A Workspace administrator or a supervising parent or guardian may control availability for some accounts.
Also check that you are signed in to the Google Account that owns the share. If you use multiple accounts on a device, the list you see may not be the one connected to the share you want to change. If the control remains unavailable, account age, region, Workspace policies, or supervised-account settings may be relevant; ask the Workspace administrator or supervising parent or guardian, as applicable.
An arrival or departure alert cannot be added
Check that the person is sharing location with you in a way that supports notifications, and that the relevant account and app meet Google’s requirements. Link-based sharing does not support these alerts, and Google lists offline status, an outdated app, age restrictions, and viewing without signing in through a shared link among possible reasons the feature may be unavailable. The viewer needs Google Maps notification permissions enabled to receive the alert notification. Review the conditions in Google’s notification help.
If the alert option is missing, distinguish that problem from whether the person can see the shared location at all. Location sharing can be available while arrival and departure alerts are not. Check the sharing method, the account eligibility and age requirements, app version, connection status, and whether the viewer is signed in rather than viewing an unsigned web or shared-link view.
Someone still appears to have access after you silenced a Maps notification
Silencing Google Location Sharing (you) changes a notice on your own Android device; it does not remove a recipient from your shared-location list. Use Location sharing → person’s profile → Stop to end access for that person. If the concern is specifically arrival or departure alerts, switch off Allow Location Sharing notifications in account settings instead.
Your shared location seems stale or inaccurate
If you disabled the Android Google Location Sharing (you) notification, turn it back on and allow Maps to refresh location updates. Also verify the device’s location setting and internet connection, which Google lists among the sharing prerequisites. A recipient’s view can depend on the sharing device being online and meeting the app’s requirements; an offline sharer is also one reason an alert feature may be unavailable.

Best Value
Choose the least disruptive setting that meets your privacy goal
- End one person’s access: stop sharing from that person’s profile.
- Keep sharing, but prevent arrival and departure alerts: switch off Allow Location Sharing notifications in Google Account Location Sharing settings.
- Silence your own Android update notice: disable Google Location Sharing (you), understanding that location refresh may become inaccurate.
- Share only for navigation: use Share trip progress, which ends when you reach the destination or stop navigation.
When in doubt, use the control that matches the outcome you want. Stop a share to remove a particular viewer, turn off the account alert permission to prevent arrival or departure alerts while sharing continues, and change the Android notification category only if you accept its possible effect on location refresh. Google’s guidance does not identify a product purchase or extra accessory needed for these settings; they are managed through Maps and Google Account controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop sharing my location on Google Maps with one person?
In Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select the person’s profile, and tap Stop. This ends that person’s access through the share without requiring you to stop sharing with everyone else.
How do I turn off Google Maps location sharing notifications without stopping sharing?
Open Google Account Location Sharing settings and turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications. This disables existing arrival or departure alerts and prevents new ones, while location sharing can continue.
Recommended Free Tools
Can someone get an alert when I arrive or leave a place?
Yes. Someone who can view your shared location may add an arrival or departure notification for an address or map location. You can turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications to disable existing alerts and prevent new ones without ending the share.
Will someone know if I turn off alerts about my location?
Google says people are not notified when you turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications. They may still be able to see your shared location unless you stop sharing with them separately.
Does turning off the Android Google Location Sharing (you) notification stop sharing?
It is not the control for stopping a person’s access. Google warns that turning off this Android notification can stop your shared location from refreshing and make the location recipients see inaccurate. Use the person’s profile and tap Stop to end a share.
How many arrival or departure alerts can someone set for my location?
Google documents a limit of up to five Location Sharing notifications for each person sharing their location with a viewer. This is a per-person feature limit, not a limit on the number of people who can share with you.

Alerts are unavailable for some accounts and for link-based sharing. Google also lists an offline sharer, an outdated app, age restrictions, or viewing without signing in through a shared link as possible reasons. Google Maps notifications must be enabled for the sharer to receive an email or possible push notice.
Can I manage Location sharing from a computer?
Yes. Google says live-location sharing must be started from a mobile device, but sharing settings can be managed on a computer, including finding or hiding another person and stopping an existing share.
Does Share trip progress keep sharing my location after a trip?
No. Trip progress includes your destination, estimated arrival time, and current location during car, walking, or bicycle navigation. It ends when you reach the destination or stop navigation.
The Bottom Line
Use Location sharing → person’s profile → Stop to remove a specific person’s access. Turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications in Google Account settings if you want to block arrival and departure alerts while sharing continues. On Android, silencing Google Location Sharing (you) is a separate choice that can make location updates less accurate.
