To control where a WooCommerce product appears, edit it in WordPress, choose a value under Catalog visibility, and update the product. The four choices determine whether it appears in the shop catalog, store search, both, or neither. They control listings—not, by themselves, access to the product page or search-engine indexing.
What WooCommerce catalog visibility controls
Catalog visibility determines whether a product is included in shop/catalog listings and store search. WooCommerce’s REST API uses four canonical values: visible, catalog, search, and hidden (WooCommerce REST API documentation). The corresponding editor choices are commonly labeled “Shop and search results,” “Shop only,” “Search results only,” and “Hidden”; labels and layout can vary by WooCommerce version and editor context.

WooCommerce’s Store API likewise describes catalog_visibility in terms of whether hidden or visible catalog products are shown (WooCommerce Store API documentation). These listing behaviors do not establish whether a visitor can open a product’s single-product URL or whether a search engine can index its page.

- In the WordPress admin, go to Products and open the product you want to change.
- In the product editor, find Catalog visibility in the Publish panel. Check the controls in your installed version if the panel or wording differs.
- Select the appropriate option: Shop and search results, Shop only, Search results only, or Hidden.
- Update the product, then check the shop and store search to confirm the intended listing behavior.
The editor may also show a Featured designation among Catalog Visibility settings; featured status is distinct from the four visibility choices (WooCommerce product features guide).
#1 Best Overall
Hide a product from the shop but keep it searchable
Choose Search results only (search) and update the product. It should be omitted from shop/catalog listings while remaining eligible for store search. This setting concerns the store’s listings; it does not establish that the product page is inaccessible by direct URL.
Hide a product from search but keep it in the catalog
Choose Shop only (catalog) and update the product. It should remain in shop/catalog listings but be omitted from store search.
What “Hidden” means—and what it does not
Hidden (hidden) means the product is omitted from catalog listings and store search under catalog-visibility behavior. It should not be treated as a privacy or confidentiality setting. The cited WooCommerce documentation does not establish that this choice blocks access to the single-product URL or prevents a search engine from indexing the page. If either outcome matters, use an appropriate access-control or indexing solution and verify its behavior separately.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The main Shop page may be controlled by WooCommerce’s Product Catalog template. WooCommerce’s guide says that template displays published products by default and takes priority over edits made directly to the Shop page (WooCommerce Product Catalog template guide). A page-level edit may therefore not control what the storefront displays.

- Confirm that you updated the product after changing its visibility.
- Reopen the product and verify the selected Catalog visibility value.
- Inspect the Product Catalog template and the storefront display, especially if you edited the Shop page directly.
- If the product still appears, investigate the theme and installed plugins; their effects depend on the store’s configuration.
When built-in visibility is not enough
The core selector chooses where products are listed. It does not, by itself, promise to disable purchases, change prices or buttons, or impose role- or location-based access restrictions. WooCommerce’s Catalog Visibility Options extension documents controls for disabling cart and checkout functionality, changing price or button display, and restricting product visibility by product, category, user role, or location (Catalog Visibility Options extension). Those are extension features, not guarantees of the built-in selector.
