Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can connect a phone to a non-smart TV if the TV has a compatible input and you use a source that can send it video. For a TV with HDMI, the two practical options are a phone-to-HDMI adapter or an HDMI streaming player. The right choice depends on your phone’s video-output support, the apps you want to use, and whether you prefer a cable or wireless sharing.
First, check what inputs your TV has
Look at the back or side of the TV for an HDMI port, then note which HDMI input you plan to use. HDMI is the common connection documented for current streaming players. Roku says its streaming players work with televisions that have HDMI; using 4K or HDR also requires compatible equipment and a display (Roku TV requirements).

If your TV has no HDMI port, identify its exact model and inputs before buying anything. Legacy connections such as composite or component may require conversion, and a generic HDMI converter is not guaranteed to work with every phone, adapter, TV, or protected video signal. Apple also notes that some conversions to DVI, composite, or component are incompatible (Apple adapter guidance).
Choose how you want to connect
Use a wired phone-to-HDMI adapter
A wired adapter sends the phone’s video to the TV through HDMI. For Apple devices, match the adapter to the device’s connector: USB-C, Lightning, or 30-pin. Apple’s guidance is straightforward: “To mirror content from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on a secondary display, you need the correct adapter” (Apple Support). Check your exact iPhone or iPad connector before choosing an adapter.

For Android, do not assume a USB-C port supports video output. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact phone model to confirm wired video output before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. A matching plug alone does not establish compatibility.
Some films, TV shows, and streaming apps require an HDCP-compliant connection. A physical connection can fit and still fail to play protected video; Apple cites its VGA adapter as an example of a non-HDCP connection that can trigger an incompatibility alert. Check the phone, adapter, and service requirements rather than assuming every app will work over a cable.

Use an HDMI streaming player for casting or mirroring
An HDMI streaming player connects to the TV and acts as a receiver for supported wireless sharing. It can be a better fit when you want to use supported casting apps or share a phone screen without a direct video cable. Your phone, receiver, app, and network must support the method you choose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Google’s listed setup requirements for its streaming devices include Android 9.0 or later or iOS 17.0 or later for the Google Home app. These version requirements can change, so check Google’s current device requirements before setup (Google streaming-device requirements).

Screen mirroring and app casting are different. Casting sends supported content from an app to the receiver; mirroring reproduces the phone’s screen. Roku documents several options, including app casting, supported Android or Windows screen mirroring, and AirPlay on compatible 4K Roku devices. These methods have different compatibility limits, and Roku does not support mirroring from every Android device (Roku phone-sharing methods).

| What to consider | Phone-to-HDMI adapter | HDMI streaming player |
|---|---|---|
| TV requirement | HDMI input and a compatible adapter/cable | HDMI input; Roku says its players work with HDMI televisions |
| Phone compatibility | Connector must match; Android wired video output must be confirmed for the exact model | Phone and receiver must support the chosen casting or mirroring method |
| Network | No Wi-Fi is needed to carry the wired video signal | Google Cast setup requires the phone and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network |
| What appears on TV | Wired display output; protected apps may require HDCP-compatible equipment | Either supported app content or a mirrored screen, depending on the method |
| Resolution and protection | Depends on the phone, adapter, TV, and protected-content requirements | Google requires HDCP 1.3 or higher; 4K requires HDCP 2.2, a 4K-capable display, and internet of at least 20 Mbps for its 4K guidance |
Google’s HDCP and network figures are requirements for its streaming-device guidance, not universal requirements for every player or video service. Resolution and HDR also depend on the TV and player; Roku’s 4K/HDR features require compatible equipment (Google requirements; Roku requirements).

Set it up
- Check the TV: confirm that it has HDMI and identify the input number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- For a wired connection: confirm the phone connector and model-level video-output support. Connect the phone to the compatible adapter, connect the adapter to an HDMI cable, and plug the cable into the TV.
- For a streaming player: connect it to the TV’s HDMI port and use the supplied power adapter. Complete the player’s on-screen setup and connect it to the required network.
- Select the TV input: use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select the HDMI port used by the adapter or player.
- Start sharing: for Google Cast, put the phone and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network, open a Cast-enabled app, tap Cast, and select the device. On Roku, choose a supported app-casting, screen-mirroring, or AirPlay option appropriate to the phone and Roku model.
Fix a black screen or no signal
- Confirm power: make sure the streaming player is powered, and check the phone and adapter connections for a wired setup.
- Check the selected input: switch the TV to the HDMI port actually in use.
- Reconnect the cable: reseat the HDMI cable and adapter, then see whether the picture appears.
- Try another HDMI port: if available, move the device to a different port and select that input. Google recommends checking power, the selected HDMI input, cable fit, and another input when troubleshooting a black screen (Google troubleshooting).
- Check compatibility: for a wired connection, verify Android model-level video output and whether the app requires HDCP. For wireless sharing, verify that the app supports casting or that the specific phone and receiver support mirroring.
