If you forgot your Samsung Galaxy Tab A’s screen PIN, pattern, or password, first check whether a trusted-device or trusted-location unlock method was already configured. If not, regaining access may require erasing the tablet and setting it up again. A frozen screen and a carrier network lock are different problems, and neither is fixed by the same steps.
First identify what kind of lock you have
“Unlock” can mean several different things. The recovery route depends on which one applies:

- Forgotten screen credential: You cannot get past the PIN, pattern, or password. A remote erase or factory reset may be necessary if a previously configured unlock method is unavailable.
- Frozen or unresponsive tablet: You know the credential, but the tablet is not responding. A restart may help; it does not remove the screen lock.
- Carrier or network lock: The tablet restricts use of another provider’s SIM or network. Contact the carrier or retailer that supplied it.
- Account requested after reset: Google device protection may require the Google account previously associated with the tablet. This is an anti-theft check, not the screen PIN.
Galaxy Tab A covers many models and software versions. Check the model number on the device, its packaging, or in Settings if accessible. Samsung lists, for example, the Galaxy Tab A (7.0) SM-T285 and Galaxy Tab A7 Wi-Fi SM-T500 as separate models. Use the support page or manual for your exact model: Samsung U.S. support and Samsung UK support.

If the tablet is frozen but you know the screen credential
Samsung UK recommends a soft reset for an unresponsive device: hold Power and Volume Down until the screen turns black and the Samsung logo appears, then try the known credential again. This restarts the tablet; it does not bypass a forgotten PIN, pattern, or password. Button behavior can vary by model, so consult the exact model’s manual if this combination does not work.

If you forgot the PIN, pattern, or password
Check for a recovery option already configured
If you set up Smart Lock or another trusted-device or trusted-location condition before being locked out, see whether that trusted condition is still available. Samsung notes that features vary by device. You cannot rely on enabling a new trusted condition remotely after losing access.
Understand what a remote reset does
Samsung Support UK states: “If you are locked out of your device and have not set up a remote unlock method, you will need to perform a factory reset.” The guidance was updated 24 April 2026. A reset is an erase-and-recovery route, not a way to retrieve or reveal the forgotten credential.

Samsung’s U.S. support guidance describes two remote erase routes: SmartThings Find using the Samsung account associated with the tablet, or Google Find My Device using the Google account associated with it. For Samsung’s management functions, the tablet needs power, a stable network connection, an associated Samsung account, and remote controls enabled. For Google’s reset route, Samsung says the device must be powered on and located.
Use the remote erase route available to you
- SmartThings Find: Open Samsung’s SmartThings Find, sign in with the Samsung account used on the tablet, select the device, choose Erase data, and authenticate as prompted. If the tablet does not meet the service’s prerequisites or cannot be reached, the remote action may not complete.
- Google Find My Device: Open Google Find My Device, sign in with the Google account used on the tablet, select the tablet, and choose the factory-reset or erase option shown. The tablet must be powered on and located for the route Samsung describes.
Labels and feature availability can vary by model, region, and software version. If neither service can reach the tablet, consult Samsung’s support page for the exact model rather than trying an unverified button sequence. The official guidance cited here does not establish one physical-button reset sequence for every Galaxy Tab A.

Plan for data loss and account verification
Back up the tablet before erasing if you still have a way to do so. Samsung warns that remote erasure deletes device data and may also erase an SD card. After a reset, setup may require the Google account previously registered on the tablet because of Google device protection. Sign in with the relevant account, then restore from an available backup.
If a previous owner’s Google account is requested
Use the Google account previously associated with the tablet. This account check is an anti-theft protection; a factory reset does not remove it. If you are the legitimate owner but cannot access that account, contact Samsung or the carrier with proof of ownership. Do not use bypass tools or instructions that claim to defeat the account check.

If you mean a carrier or network lock
Contact the network provider or retailer that supplied the tablet and ask about its network-unlock process. Eligibility and any charge depend on the carrier, device, contract, and country; there is no universal fee or guarantee that a particular device qualifies. A carrier unlock concerns network use, not a forgotten Android screen credential.
