The WordPress MCP Adapter connects WordPress abilities to AI clients that support the Model Context Protocol (MCP). To set it up, check your WordPress and PHP versions, install the adapter, then choose a local STDIO connection through WP-CLI or an HTTP connection through the documented remote proxy. The adapter exposes abilities; it does not independently grant permissions to your site.
What the WordPress MCP Adapter does
The adapter bridges WordPress’s Abilities API and MCP. An MCP client can use it to discover and invoke WordPress capabilities that are exposed as abilities. The package documentation describes two connection transports: STDIO and HTTP. See the WordPress MCP Adapter package documentation for its current instructions.

On the default server, abilities are discoverable and executable when they are marked meta.mcp.public. The adapter provides MCP tools for ability discovery, information, and execution. A custom server can instead list abilities explicitly. This means installing the adapter does not automatically make every site feature available to an AI client.
Check requirements before installing
As stated in the package documentation accessed October 7, 2026, the adapter lists PHP 7.4 or later and recommends WordPress 6.9 or later. WordPress 6.9 includes the Abilities API in core; WordPress 6.8 requires the separate Abilities API package or plugin. Requirements can change between package releases, so check the current package page when preparing an installation.

The documentation presents Composer as the primary installation method. From the project directory, run:

Plugin or development checkout
The package also describes a development-plugin route: clone the WordPress MCP Adapter repository into wp-content/plugins/mcp-adapter, then use Composer to install its dependencies. For plugin projects where multiple plugins may load different versions of shared packages, the documentation recommends Jetpack Autoloader to help reduce dependency conflicts.

Configure local access with STDIO
The package’s STDIO example configures an MCP client to invoke wp mcp-adapter serve, supplying a site path, server ID, and WordPress user. Use the paths and account details appropriate to your installation; the exact client configuration format depends on the MCP client.
- Confirm WP-CLI is available for the WordPress installation and that the intended user can access it.
- In the MCP client’s server configuration, set the command to
wpand the arguments to runmcp-adapter servewith the documented site path, server ID, and user. - Use WP-CLI to list available MCP servers and test tool discovery, as described in the package documentation.
- In the client, verify it can discover the tools exposed by the configured server. Only abilities exposed under the server’s rules should appear.
Configure an HTTP connection
The documented HTTP approach uses the @automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote proxy. Its configuration supplies a WordPress API URL, username, and Application Password through environment variables.

- Make the WordPress REST API endpoint reachable from the environment running the proxy.
- Configure the proxy with the site’s API URL, WordPress username, and Application Password using the environment-variable names in the package documentation.
- Set the MCP client to launch or connect to the proxy according to its configuration format.
- Test tool discovery in the client and confirm that only the abilities intended for exposure are available.
Treat the Application Password as a credential: do not put a real value in published examples, screenshots, or version-controlled configuration.
Check client support and ability visibility
The README names Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code, and Cursor as clients with configuration examples. That list is documentation of examples, not a compatibility guarantee for every client version or release. Check the current instructions for both the adapter and the client you plan to use.
