Start with the host connection—not the enclosure. The Steam Machine’s reported rear USB-C port is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps, while conventional eGPU enclosures such as Sonnet’s require Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or certain USB4 ports. The cited information does not establish that a standard Thunderbolt/USB4 enclosure can connect directly to the Steam Machine as a plug-and-play eGPU.
A reported 2026 enthusiast modification took a different route: an adapter in the machine’s sole M.2 slot connected to an external OCuLink GPU dock. That is an experimental hardware modification, not a routine enclosure purchase. It also means relocating the boot SSD and addressing GPU power, cable routing, and potential chassis changes.

Can a conventional eGPU enclosure connect directly to the Steam Machine?
There is no supported direct match in the cited specifications. Valve’s Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide lists the machine’s video outputs, and Tom’s Hardware reports its rear USB-C port as USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps. A USB-C-shaped connector does not by itself mean Thunderbolt or USB4.

It says USB4 systems need the required USB4 Host Router and that the stated eGPU functionality requires the latest 64-bit version of Windows 11. These are requirements for Sonnet’s described Windows workflow, not a blanket compatibility promise for every enclosure, operating system, or SteamOS configuration.

Accordingly, do not select a conventional enclosure just because it uses USB-C or because its GPU and power supply look suitable. The host connection must support the enclosure’s required eGPU interface, and the available Steam Machine information does not show that it does.
What eGPU options are supported by the available evidence?
| Path | What is established | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional Thunderbolt/USB4 enclosure | Sonnet describes its Breakaway Box setup for Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, and certain USB4 hosts; its guide specifies Windows 11 64-bit. | The Steam Machine’s cited USB-C specification is USB 3.2 Gen 2, not a stated Thunderbolt/USB4 connection. |
| M.2-to-OCuLink adapter and external dock | Tom’s Hardware reported a community modification using this connection method in 2026. | It uses the only internal M.2 slot, moves the boot SSD to external storage, and can require separate GPU power and chassis/cable changes. |
| Do not modify the machine | Avoids eGPU-specific compatibility assumptions and hardware changes. | Adds no external GPU; whether another system is a better-value choice depends on your needs and budget. |
What does the reported M.2-to-OCuLink setup involve?
In the modification reported by Tom’s Hardware on August 11, 2026, the builder used an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter in the Steam Machine’s sole internal M.2 slot and connected it to an external GPU dock. Because the supplied SSD occupied that slot, the boot drive was moved into a USB-C NVMe enclosure.

- Application: Compatible with NUC/laptop/handheld game console with Thunderbolt 4/3 USB4 interface. Note that The Type-C port is not applicable if it does not support Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB4 protocols. And package does not contain the graphics card
- Multiple Interfaces: Features one Thunderbolt port with PD 85W charging, one Thunderbolt port with PD 15W charging, and one DP port.Supports PCIe 3.0 x16 data transfer mode
- Compact & Durable Design:Featuring a lightweight yet robust anodized aluminum shell, this enclosure combines portability with premium protection. Complete with a custom carrying case, it delivers desktop-grade graphics performance wherever you go
This is a single reported build, not an official Valve configuration or a repeatable compatibility test. The report does not establish long-term reliability, behavior across SteamOS updates, compatibility across GPU models, or game performance. It should therefore be treated as an experiment rather than a guaranteed upgrade path.

Hardware you would need to evaluate
- M.2-to-OCuLink adapter: This is the connection method used in the reported modification. Confirm the exact adapter and dock interface before buying; the report is not a compatibility list.
- OCuLink eGPU dock: Check its GPU fit, connection requirements, and whether it includes a power supply.
- USB-C NVMe enclosure: Needed in the reported arrangement to house the displaced boot SSD externally.
- Separate PC power supply, if required: The reported Aoostar EG01 dock has no built-in PSU. The report gives no universal wattage recommendation, so size a supply to the specific GPU and dock specifications.
How should you choose a power supply?
Choose a PSU only after selecting the GPU and dock. First check whether the dock includes a power supply; the reported Aoostar EG01 does not. If it does not, consult the exact GPU’s power requirements and the dock manufacturer’s specifications, including the required connectors and any stated PSU guidance. The available reporting does not establish one wattage that suits every GPU-and-dock combination.

- Package Include: OCuLink SFF-8612 Female to PCIe x16 Enclosure Dock, and SFF-8611 Male to Male Cable 50cm/19.7inch (Note: The GPU and Power Supply are not included)
- Advantage of the dock: Our enclosue detachable design on both ends for improved portability and easy storage. PCB board with 10μ gold-plated contacts ensure superior conductivity and reduce oxidation/rust-related resistance that may cause system crashes or BSOD. Multi-status LED indicators provide clear visual feedback for real-time device monitoring. Transfer Speed: PCIe 4.0 x4 (64Gbps )
- SFF-8611 Male to Male Cable: Ultra-thin & flexible design (0.5mm thickness) with premium aesthetics, eliminating port damage risks from rigid traditional OCuLink cables. Flat cable architecture with full-coverage shielding and advanced EMI materials to minimize interference and performance degradation
- Compatible Graphics Cards: Compatible with graphics cards of various sizes like RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX etc., no need to worry about graphics card length restrictions. 🔺Compatible Power Supply: Compatible with standard ATX power supply ONLY, dual screw mounting (top & bottom) for PSU stability
- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
Do not treat the power supply as evidence that the connection will work. A suitable PSU can power the graphics card, but it cannot turn the Steam Machine’s cited USB 3.2 Gen 2 port into Thunderbolt or USB4, nor does it resolve the separate M.2/OCuLink compatibility and installation questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the physical and service risks?
The reported builder needed to route an OCuLink cable through the machine’s chassis, and the report said that case modification was not yet complete. An internal adapter, external boot-drive enclosure, and routed cable make this substantially more involved than attaching a typical external peripheral.

- Very Important NOTE: Do NOT insert CPU CABLE to the PCIE-8PIN port of the dock, it will cause automatic power-off protection, if you wrongly inserted it, please unplug it and then unplug the ATX-24PIN cable, and next insert the ATX-24PIN cable again to use it
Which path should you choose?
- Want a straightforward external enclosure? The cited Steam Machine port information does not establish the Thunderbolt/USB4 host connection Sonnet requires for its conventional setup. Do not buy on connector appearance alone.
- Comfortable with experimental hardware work? Investigate the M.2-to-OCuLink route only after checking the exact adapter, dock, GPU, external SSD arrangement, power requirements, and physical fit. The reported modification is evidence that one build was attempted, not a product-wide guarantee.
- Want to avoid opening the system? Skip the eGPU modification. It avoids these hardware changes, though it will not add an external GPU.
