How to Connect Two Bose SoundLink Flex Speakers for Stereo or Party Mode

The original SoundLink Flex links with Bluetooth and volume buttons; the 2nd Gen uses Shortcut. Learn the correct steps and which pairs support Stereo Mode.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify whether your Bose SoundLink Flex is the original model or the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen): the original uses Bluetooth and volume buttons for manual linking, while the 2nd Gen uses its Shortcut button. The original’s manual sequence starts in Party Mode and can then toggle to Stereo Mode. With the 2nd Gen Speaker Link system, two speakers of the same model enter Stereo Mode; different supported models enter Party Mode.

That generation check matters because the controls and compatibility rules are not interchangeable. If you have two original SoundLink Flex speakers, follow the original model’s linking procedure. If you have two 2nd Gen Flex speakers, use Shortcut on each. If another Bose model is part of the pair, confirm its exact name and generation against Bose’s compatibility list before expecting Stereo Mode.

Choose Party Mode or Stereo Mode

Both modes connect two speakers for playback, but they distribute audio differently. In Party Mode, both speakers play in unison. In Stereo Mode, the speakers play separate left and right channels. Choose Party Mode when you want the same playback from both speakers; choose Stereo Mode when you want channel separation and have a compatible pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility depends on the speaker generation and, for the 2nd Gen Speaker Link system, whether the models match. Do not assume that any two Bose Bluetooth speakers can link together, or that a button sequence for one Flex generation applies to the other.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The practical distinction is simple: Party Mode duplicates the program across the linked speakers, while Stereo Mode assigns distinct sides of a stereo signal. Party Mode is the appropriate choice when a pair needs to play together without left/right separation. Stereo Mode is the option when you want the two speakers to act as the left and right parts of a stereo pair. The mode is not a volume setting; it changes how the audio is distributed.

Question Party Mode Stereo Mode
What plays from each speaker? The speakers play in unison. The speakers play separate left and right channels.
Original SoundLink Flex Supported; the manual linking sequence starts here. Available with compatible models listed by Bose.
SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) Speaker Link Supported between compatible Speaker Link models, including different models. Requires two speakers of the same model.

Think of the mode and compatibility questions as separate checks. First decide whether you want synchronized playback or stereo separation. Then check whether the exact speakers you own support that mode together. A pair can be eligible for Party Mode without being eligible for Stereo Mode, particularly when models from the original Flex compatibility list are mixed.

Identify which SoundLink Flex you have

Check the product name in the Bose app or the speaker’s product documentation before following any steps. Bose identifies the newer model by the full name “SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen)”; the original product is titled “SoundLink Flex.” If the app or documentation does not make the generation clear, check the model label or the documentation associated with that speaker. Do not guess from the controls: using the wrong generation’s procedure can leave you following buttons that do not apply to your setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are linking two speakers, check each one rather than assuming they are the same generation because they share the SoundLink Flex name. The original and 2nd Gen products use different linking workflows, and Bose publishes distinct compatibility information for them. Confirming both product names before you start can prevent you from pressing controls meant for another system.

For any mixed-model setup, record the full product name and series of the second Bose speaker as well. Names such as Revolve and Revolve+ are not enough on their own when deciding about Stereo Mode: Bose’s original Flex Stereo list specifies Series II versions, while its Party list includes Series I and II. Use the product documentation or Bose app information to resolve the exact model instead of relying on a family name.

Connect two original SoundLink Flex speakers

The original SoundLink Flex has a manual linking sequence. Start with both speakers powered on and one speaker connected to your mobile device. The sequence creates a Party Mode link first; after the speakers announce that mode, you can switch a compatible pair to Stereo Mode.

  1. On the speaker connected to your mobile device, press and hold the Bluetooth button and Volume Up together.
  2. When prompted, release the buttons and follow the instruction to press Bluetooth and Volume Down on the second Bose speaker.
  3. On the second speaker, press and hold Bluetooth and Volume Down together until it emits a tone.
  4. Wait for the spoken confirmation. The speakers should announce “Party Mode.”
  5. To switch a compatible pair to Stereo Mode, press and hold Bluetooth and Volume Up until the speakers announce “Stereo Mode.”

Bose says that repeating the Bluetooth-and-Volume-Up command toggles the linked speakers back to Party Mode. Listen for the spoken mode announcement rather than assuming the mode changed based only on the button press.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The order of the first two controls is important. Begin with the original Flex that is already connected to the mobile device, and use Bluetooth plus Volume Up on that speaker. The second speaker receives the Bluetooth plus Volume Down command after the first speaker prompts you. The second speaker should emit a tone before the pair announces Party Mode. This is a manual linking sequence, not a single simultaneous button press on both speakers.

Do not expect the original manual sequence to begin in Stereo Mode. Party Mode is the initial linked state, even if your goal is stereo playback. Once you hear the Party Mode announcement, use Bluetooth plus Volume Up on the connected speaker to request Stereo Mode, provided the combination is on Bose’s Stereo compatibility list. The spoken announcement confirms the mode transition; repeating the same command returns a compatible pair to Party Mode.

Original-model compatibility

Bose lists the following products for Party Mode with the original SoundLink Flex. Its Stereo Mode list is narrower, so a combination that supports Party Mode is not necessarily a Stereo Mode combination.

Mode Models listed by Bose
Party Mode SoundLink Flex; SoundLink Micro; SoundLink Color II; SoundLink Revolve (Series I and II); SoundLink Revolve+ (Series I and II).
Stereo Mode SoundLink Flex; SoundLink Micro; SoundLink Color II; SoundLink Revolve II; SoundLink Revolve+ II.

For two original SoundLink Flex speakers, the matching model appears in both lists. For a mixed-model pair, check the exact model and series against the list for the mode you want. In particular, Bose’s Stereo list names the Revolve II and Revolve+ II, not the Series I versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are compatibility lists for pairing with the original Flex, not a general promise that every Bose Bluetooth speaker can link to it. For example, the Series I Revolve and Revolve+ appear on the Party list but not the Stereo list. That means the mode you can select depends on the particular pairing, not simply on whether both speakers are Bose products or whether one mode worked previously.

Use the Party list when synchronized playback is sufficient, and use the Stereo list when left/right separation is the goal. If the exact name or series of a mixed-model speaker does not appear in the list for the desired mode, do not assume that another series in the same product family will behave identically.

Using the Bose Connect app

Bose identifies the Bose Connect app as the primary setup route for the original SoundLink Flex and also documents the manual button sequence above. The app workflow is an alternative setup route; the button instructions here are the documented manual method. Do not use the original model’s Bluetooth-and-volume sequence as a substitute for the 2nd Gen Shortcut process.

If you prefer the app route, use Bose Connect for the original Flex rather than interpreting the manual controls as the only documented way to set up the pair. The button procedure remains useful when you want to follow the manual method directly. No app sequence is needed to explain the physical controls above, and those controls should not be transferred to the 2nd Gen Speaker Link system.

Connect SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) speakers

The SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) uses the Shortcut button for Speaker Link. Bose says the factory-default Shortcut is set to linking. Press the Shortcut button on one speaker, then press it on a second compatible speaker, and wait for the spoken mode confirmation.

  1. Confirm the models. For Stereo Mode, both speakers must be the same model. For Party Mode, use models Bose lists as Speaker Link-compatible.
  2. Press Shortcut on the first speaker.
  3. Press Shortcut on the second compatible speaker.
  4. Wait for the spoken confirmation. Matching models announce Stereo Mode and identify the left and right speakers; different supported models announce Party Mode.

For a matching-model pair, Bose’s 2nd Gen owner’s guide describes the confirmation as “Stereo mode,” followed by “Left” on the primary speaker and “Right” on the secondary speaker. That spoken left/right identification is the clearest indication that the pair entered Stereo Mode.

The second-generation sequence is deliberately different from the original model’s manual procedure: press Shortcut once on one compatible speaker and then on the other. The factory-default Shortcut assignment is linking, so this is the expected control if it has not been reassigned. Wait for the spoken confirmation rather than applying the original Bluetooth-and-volume controls to the newer speaker.

The confirmation also tells you what type of pair Bose has recognized. Two of the same model announce Stereo Mode and identify the left and right units. Different supported models announce Party Mode. Thus, if your 2nd Gen Flex is paired with another supported but different Speaker Link model, Party Mode is the expected result rather than a sign that the system has failed to link.

2nd Gen Speaker Link compatibility

Bose’s current support information lists these Speaker Link-compatible products. Within this system, Stereo Mode requires two speakers of the same model; different supported models enter Party Mode.

Speaker Link models listed by Bose Stereo Mode requirement
SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen); SoundLink Max; SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen); SoundLink Plus. Use two of the same model.

This compatibility list is for the 2nd Gen Speaker Link system. It should not be applied to the original Flex’s manual linking system, whose Party and Stereo lists differ. Likewise, the original Flex’s button sequence is not the setup procedure for a 2nd Gen speaker.

For a 2nd Gen Flex pair, both units are the same model and therefore meet Bose’s same-model requirement for Stereo Mode. A Flex (2nd Gen) linked with a SoundLink Max, SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), or SoundLink Plus is a different-model pairing: if the products are Speaker Link-compatible, Bose says that combination enters Party Mode. For Stereo Mode with this system, match the model names exactly.

Do not combine generations in your assumptions. The compatibility list names SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) for Speaker Link, whereas the original Flex list refers to SoundLink Micro without that 2nd Gen Speaker Link framing. The model lists and controls describe different systems; check the exact product and generation before treating a mixed pair as supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which setup should you use?

  • You have two original SoundLink Flex speakers: use the Bluetooth-and-volume manual sequence. It starts in Party Mode; use Bluetooth and Volume Up afterward to toggle a compatible pair into Stereo Mode.
  • You have two SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) speakers: use Shortcut on each speaker. The matching models should announce Stereo Mode and identify left and right.
  • You have a 2nd Gen Flex and another supported Speaker Link model: use Shortcut on both. Bose says different supported models enter Party Mode rather than Stereo Mode.
  • You have a mixed pair involving the original Flex: verify the second speaker’s exact model and series against Bose’s original-model Party or Stereo list before linking.
  • You are unsure which generation you own: check the product name in the Bose app, model label, or product documentation first.

A useful decision order is: identify both speakers, choose the mode you want, and then check whether the exact combination supports it. If the answer is Party Mode, follow the procedure for the relevant generation and listen for that confirmation. If the answer is Stereo Mode, make sure the pair qualifies before starting: on the 2nd Gen system that means two identical models, while the original Flex system uses Bose’s published Stereo list.

If your priority is two speakers playing the same audio, Party Mode is the direct choice. On the original Flex, the documented manual procedure enters this mode first. On 2nd Gen Speaker Link, matching or different compatible models can result in Party Mode depending on the combination; two different supported models are specifically described as entering Party Mode. If your priority is left/right channel separation, use Stereo Mode only after verifying model compatibility.

If the speakers do not enter the expected mode

Use the spoken prompts to diagnose the setup before repeating steps. The original system prompts for the second speaker’s Bluetooth-and-Volume-Down command and announces Party Mode; the 2nd Gen system announces the mode after Shortcut is pressed on both speakers. If the announcement does not match what you want, check these points:

  • Generation mismatch: confirm whether each Flex is the original SoundLink Flex or the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen). Their linking controls are different.
  • Wrong original-model control sequence: the first original speaker uses Bluetooth plus Volume Up; the second uses Bluetooth plus Volume Down. The sequence begins with the speaker already connected to the mobile device.
  • Wrong mode expectation: original-model manual linking begins in Party Mode. Use Bluetooth plus Volume Up after linking to toggle a compatible pair to Stereo Mode.
  • Models do not qualify for Stereo Mode: for an original Flex mixed-model pair, check Bose’s Stereo list, not just its broader Party list. For 2nd Gen Speaker Link, Stereo Mode requires two identical models.
  • Shortcut is not acting as expected on a 2nd Gen speaker: Bose describes the factory-default Shortcut as set to linking. Confirm the Shortcut assignment and follow the 2nd Gen Owner’s Guide for that speaker rather than trying the original model’s button combination.

For an original Flex pair, the expected sequence of announcements is also a useful checklist: the first speaker instructs you to use Bluetooth and Volume Down on the second, the second emits a tone, and the speakers announce Party Mode. Only after that initial link should you request Stereo Mode. On the 2nd Gen, the relevant check is that Shortcut is pressed on each compatible speaker and that you wait for the spoken result.

If the result is Party Mode when you expected Stereo Mode, first check compatibility rather than assuming a button press failed. A mixed original-model pair may be supported only for Party Mode, and a 2nd Gen Speaker Link pair made of different supported models enters Party Mode. If the speakers are a compatible stereo pair, use the mode-specific controls for their generation and listen for the Stereo Mode announcement.

Bose’s cited guidance establishes the control sequences, mode announcements, and compatible model lists; it does not establish a two-speaker connection range, a guaranteed connection success rate, or a measured amount of sound improvement. Treat those as setup-specific rather than assuming a published performance figure.

Frequently asked questions

Can two SoundLink Flex speakers play in stereo?

Yes, if they are a compatible pair and you use the procedure for their generation. Two original SoundLink Flex speakers are listed by Bose for Stereo Mode; first link them using the manual sequence, which starts in Party Mode, then hold Bluetooth and Volume Up until Stereo Mode is announced. Two SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) speakers use Shortcut, and matching models announce Stereo Mode followed by the left and right identification.

How do I connect two original Bose SoundLink Flex speakers?

With both speakers powered on and one connected to your mobile device, hold Bluetooth and Volume Up on the connected speaker. When prompted, hold Bluetooth and Volume Down on the second speaker until it emits a tone. Wait for the Party Mode announcement. Bose also identifies the Bose Connect app as the primary setup route for the original model.

How do I connect two SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) speakers?

Use Speaker Link: press Shortcut on one speaker, then press Shortcut on the other, and wait for the spoken confirmation. The factory-default Shortcut is set to linking. Two speakers of the same model announce Stereo Mode and identify left and right.

Can an original SoundLink Flex pair with a SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen)?

The Bose compatibility information described here separates the original Flex’s manual linking system from the 2nd Gen Speaker Link system and gives different model lists and controls. It does not establish that an original Flex and a 2nd Gen Flex can link together. Do not assume they are compatible; check Bose’s documentation for the exact models before trying to pair them.

Can I use different Bose speakers for Stereo Mode?

It depends on the system and exact models. Bose’s original Flex Stereo list includes SoundLink Flex, SoundLink Micro, SoundLink Color II, SoundLink Revolve II, and SoundLink Revolve+ II. The 2nd Gen Speaker Link system requires two speakers of the same model for Stereo Mode; different compatible models enter Party Mode.

Why did my speakers announce Party Mode instead of Stereo Mode?

For the original Flex manual method, Party Mode is the initial state; use Bluetooth and Volume Up afterward to toggle a compatible pair to Stereo Mode. With 2nd Gen Speaker Link, two different supported models announce Party Mode, while Stereo Mode requires two of the same model. Check the exact models and follow the controls for the generation you own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the original Flex Bluetooth-and-volume sequence work on the 2nd Gen?

No. Bose’s 2nd Gen guide uses Shortcut for Speaker Link. The Bluetooth plus Volume Up and Bluetooth plus Volume Down sequence is the manual method for the original SoundLink Flex, so identify the generation before following instructions.

What does the left/right voice prompt mean?
