How Echoes Work in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda uses the Tri Rod with Tri to learn imitations of objects and monsters she encounters, then place those echoes back into the world. An echo can become a platform, part of a makeshift route, or an ally in a fight. The system is not crafting: after learning an echo, Zelda can recreate it without gathering ingredients. The main constraint described by Nintendo is Tri’s energy capacity.

What is an echo?

An echo is a copy of a particular object or enemy in Hyrule that Zelda has learned how to recreate. The Tri Rod is the tool used to learn and make echoes, with Tri accompanying Zelda. Nintendo’s official product page describes the core idea as learning imitations of things in the world and using them when needed.

That makes an echo different from picking up and moving the original object. Zelda can make a learned copy at the point where she needs it, so the environment becomes something she can interact with in more than one way. A placed echo can function as a piece of scenery, a way to change Zelda’s route, or an entity that participates in combat. Nintendo’s developer interview describes the premise in an editorial footnote as “Gameplay where a player can copy something from the field and paste it somewhere else.”

Nintendo’s October 3, 2024 tips article says there are over a hundred echoes. That is a broad count, not a precise total, and it does not mean every echo is available from the start. The mechanic builds around learning examples encountered in the game and adding them to Zelda’s assortment.

How do I learn, create, and erase echoes?

Nintendo lists the basic controls on the game’s product page. Press ZR to learn an echo from an eligible object or monster, press Y to create an echo, and press ZR to erase an echo. Holding ZR clears all echoes currently on the field.

  1. Find something to learn. Look for an object or monster that can be copied. The learning action is done with ZR.
  2. Make a learned copy where it can help. Use Y to create an echo. For example, a bed echo can be placed as part of a route upward, while a monster echo can be created to fight alongside Zelda.
  3. Clear what you no longer need. Press ZR to erase an echo, or hold ZR to erase every current echo on the field. This gives you a way to remove placed copies rather than treating each one as permanent scenery.

Learning and creating are separate actions: first Zelda learns a particular imitation, then she can call on it again. As a result, the system is repeatable. Nintendo’s tips article specifically clarifies that echoes are not made from gathered crafting materials. Once Zelda has learned an echo, she can recreate it; the resource consideration Nintendo highlights is the energy available through Tri.

What can echoes do?

The most useful way to think about echoes is by the job they can perform in the current situation. The same general copy-and-place mechanic supports traversal, puzzle solving, and combat, but an example that works for one problem is not automatically the right choice for another.

Use What an echo can contribute Nintendo examples
Traversal and makeshift structures Create something Zelda can use to gain height or form a route through an area. Water blocks can lift Zelda toward higher ledges; beds can be stacked to make a bridge or staircase. Nintendo product page and August 5, 2024 announcement.
Puzzle solving Place a learned object or creature in a way that changes how Zelda approaches an obstacle. More than one solution may be possible. Nintendo’s developer interview emphasizes trying solutions in a player’s own way. The useful echo depends on the puzzle and the player’s available assortment.
Combat Call on a copied monster to fight alongside Zelda, or use an object as an improvised attack. Monster echoes can fight with Zelda; Nintendo also gives a rock echo as an attack example. Nintendo product page and gameplay guide.
Distraction or environmental improvisation Use an available echo or surrounding feature to create an opening rather than relying on a single prescribed tactic. Nintendo’s September 20, 2024 guide mentions meat to distract an enemy, flying monsters, rocks, and environmental fire as examples to experiment with.

Use echoes to change a route

For traversal, ask what is missing between Zelda and the place she needs to reach: height, a step, or a route across a gap. Nintendo’s examples show that an echo does not have to be a purpose-built ladder to help with movement. Water blocks can raise Zelda toward a ledge, while beds can be stacked into a staircase or bridge. These are examples of possibilities, not a guarantee that the same arrangement will solve every obstacle.

Think of a placed echo as a building block for a local problem. If a route needs more height, an object that can be stacked may be worth trying. If the challenge is to get across, a bridge-like arrangement may be more relevant. The game’s premise invites players to test the objects they have learned against the shape of the environment rather than assume that every passage has one fixed answer.

Use echoes to approach puzzles flexibly

An echo can be useful in a puzzle because it changes what Zelda can place into the scene. Nintendo’s stated design intent is to give players freedom to think independently and try things instead of following one route. Producer Eiji Aonuma put that idea this way in Nintendo’s 2024 Ask the Developer interview: “Even when it comes to solving puzzles – in a game in The Legend of Zelda series, having the excitement of solving puzzles in your own unique way makes the game ‘Legend of Zelda-like’.”

In practical terms, treat a puzzle as a question about the situation rather than a test of whether you guessed a single intended echo. Consider what the obstacle asks you to change, then try a learned echo that might help. The system supports experimentation, but the available evidence does not establish that every puzzle has multiple solutions or that any particular echo works in every case.

Use monster echoes and objects in combat

Combat is not limited to attacking directly with an object. Zelda can create an echo of a monster she has encountered and have it fight alongside her. Nintendo also describes using a rock echo as an attack, illustrating that an object copy can have an offensive use as well. These options let the player choose between summoning help and trying an improvised object-based action, depending on the encounter and the echoes available.

  • Save the kingdom of Hyrule, this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda! The people of Hyrule are being swallowed by strange crevices that have arisen, with a certain swordsman among the missing. Now it's up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom in a new story from The Legend of Zelda !
  • Team up with Tri and use the power of Tri's scepter to create "echoes", which are copies of objects found in the environment. Then recreate these echoes whenever you want to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
  • Create echoes like blocks of water to reach new heights, bridge old beds, throw rocks at enemies, or find your own creative combination of echoes to do everything your own way. You can even create monster echoes to fight alongside you in combat!

Nintendo’s September 20, 2024 gameplay guide also encourages trying things that may be fun or silly. Its examples include rocks, flying monsters, meat to distract an enemy, and environmental fire. These are examples of experimentation, not a complete combat guide or guaranteed tactics. An enemy’s behavior, the surrounding space, and the echoes Zelda has learned can affect whether a particular attempt is useful.

How does Tri’s energy limit echo use?

Creating echoes draws on Tri’s energy capacity, so the resource cost is part of choosing what to place. Nintendo’s October 3, 2024 tips article illustrates the system with an echo that costs one energy level: it uses one triangle of Tri’s available energy display. This example establishes that an echo can consume a visible portion of that capacity; it does not provide a universal cost, a full cost table, or a formula for every echo.

For a practical decision, consider the energy cost alongside the echo’s role. A structure that helps solve a route problem and a monster intended to assist in a fight are different uses of the same general system, and each echo may have a different cost. Avoid assuming that the largest or most elaborate placement is automatically the best choice. The evidence from Nintendo confirms that capacity matters, but does not establish a single fixed maximum that applies to all situations or a complete list of individual echo costs.

Is there a best echo combination?

There is no universally best combination established by Nintendo’s guidance. The useful choice depends on what Zelda needs to do, what she has learned, and the energy cost of the echoes involved. A combination that helps build a route is not necessarily the right one for a fight, and an echo that is convenient in one puzzle may not address a different obstacle.

Nintendo’s September 20, 2024 guide frames the system around building an assortment, learning how echoes can be used, and experimenting for tactics or solutions that suit the player. Its exact wording is: “It’s more about building up your assortment of echoes, learning how you can use them, and experimenting to find tactics or solutions that are fun or silly to you.” That is Nintendo’s editorial guidance, not a named developer quote. It is a better basis for approaching the system than looking for a definitive ranking.

  • For a height problem: consider an echo that can help Zelda rise, such as the water block example from Nintendo.
  • For a gap or route: consider whether stacking or arranging objects, as with beds, could form a bridge or staircase.
  • For an enemy encounter: consider whether a monster echo, an object-based attack, a distraction, or an environmental interaction suits the situation.
  • When a plan fails: change the approach rather than assuming the echo system has only one intended use. Experimentation is part of Nintendo’s stated design intent.

What the echo system is—and is not

Echoes are learned copies that Zelda can recreate with the Tri Rod. They are not crafted from ingredients collected for a recipe, and they are not limited to combat summons. Nintendo’s examples span movement, makeshift structures, puzzles, and fighting. The recurring constraints supported by Nintendo’s guidance are whether Zelda has learned the echo and whether Tri’s energy capacity can support creating it.

The game is The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, released for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024, as Nintendo stated in its August 5, 2024 release announcement. “Echoes of Hyrule” is a shorthand for the mechanic, not the game’s official title. For anyone approaching the system for the first time, the core loop is simple: learn something with ZR, create it with Y when it can help, and erase it with ZR when you want to clear it away.
