The dependable way to connect to a virtual private server (VPS) in Visual Studio Code is Microsoft’s Remote – SSH extension. First make sure the VPS accepts SSH and your computer has an OpenSSH-compatible client. Test ssh user@hostname in a terminal, then run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host… in VS Code. After VS Code installs its server component on the VPS, open the remote folder and edit files, run terminals, debug, and use compatible extensions as though the project were local.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
What a VS Code VPS connection actually does
Remote – SSH creates an SSH connection from your computer to the VPS and installs a background VS Code Server on the remote operating system. The VS Code window remains on your computer, while file access, terminals, language services, and other compatible extensions run in the remote context. Your source files stay on the VPS; they are not copied into a local project folder merely because you opened them in VS Code.

The practical result is a single editor for code deployed on a server, without repeatedly downloading files or editing through a browser-based control panel.
Prerequisites and compatibility
Local computer
- Install Visual Studio Code.
- Install an OpenSSH-compatible client. The
sshcommand must work in a terminal, macOS Terminal, Linux shell, or Windows PowerShell. - Install Microsoft’s Remote – SSH extension, or the Remote Development extension pack.
VPS
- The VPS must be running an SSH server, and the account you use must be allowed to log in.
- Microsoft lists x86_64 Debian 8 or later, Ubuntu 16.04 or later, and CentOS/RHEL 7 or later among supported Linux systems. Supported ARM Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi systems are also listed.
- Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 or 2019 (1803 or later) are supported when the official OpenSSH Server is installed and running.
- The remote host requires at least 1 GB of RAM. Microsoft recommends at least 2 GB of RAM and a two-core CPU for a better experience.
Linux dependencies and architecture limits
On a Linux VPS, the remote environment needs /bin/bash, tar, and either curl or wget. Current Remote-SSH support is for glibc-based distributions. Alpine Linux, which uses musl by default, is not supported by this setup. On ARM systems, the connection can work while individual extensions fail if they contain binaries compiled only for x86.

Network access
Your computer must reach the VPS SSH port (normally 22, unless you changed it). During first connection, the VPS also needs outbound HTTPS access so VS Code Server can be downloaded from Microsoft’s download infrastructure. Microsoft identifies update.code.visualstudio.com and vscode.download.prss.microsoft.com; restrictive firewalls may also need Marketplace or CDN access when you install remote extensions.
Install Remote – SSH in VS Code
- Open Visual Studio Code.
- Open the Extensions view with the activity-bar Extensions icon or the keyboard shortcut shown by your operating system.
- Search for Remote – SSH and install the Microsoft extension. Installing the Remote Development extension pack is an alternative that includes it.
- Reload VS Code if it asks you to do so.
The extension is free software. Installation on your local computer is enough; the remote server component is installed automatically after you make a connection.
Prepare secure SSH authentication
Use a key when possible
Microsoft recommends key-based authentication. A key avoids entering a password repeatedly while VS Code opens helper sessions, and it is easier to use with an SSH configuration entry. Create an Ed25519 key from a local terminal if you do not already have one:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -b 4096
Accept the suggested local path or choose a dedicated path, and protect the private key with a passphrase. Copy the resulting public-key file (the file ending in .pub) into the VPS account’s authorized keys using your provider’s console, an existing SSH session, or the account-administration method supplied by the server administrator. Never copy the private-key file to the VPS.
On Linux and macOS, restrict the private key so only your user can read it:

| Factor | Password | SSH key |
|---|---|---|
| Security model | Depends on the account password and server password policy. | Uses a private key that stays on your computer and a matching public key on the VPS. |
| Prompt frequency | May prompt repeatedly as VS Code opens separate SSH operations. | Usually prompts once for the key passphrase, then can reuse an agent. |
| Key management | No key files to protect, but password rotation and account lockout policies apply. | Requires backups, passphrase protection, and a recovery key or console path. |
| Recovery | Reset through the VPS console or administrator if the account remains accessible. | Add a replacement public key through the console or another administrator account if the private key is lost. |
Password login can work, but a key is the better default for a recurring development host. Do not disable every recovery method: keep provider-console access or a second administrator key so a misplaced private key does not lock you out.
Test the VPS connection outside VS Code first
Open a terminal or PowerShell window and run:
ssh user@hostname
Replace user with the VPS account and hostname with its DNS name or IP address. If your server uses a nonstandard SSH port, test that exact port:
ssh -p 2222 user@hostname
Accept the host key only when the hostname and fingerprint match the value supplied by your administrator or VPS console. Once logged in, run a harmless command such as whoami and pwd, then type exit.
This test separates ordinary SSH problems from VS Code problems. Fix DNS, routing, firewall, account, port, or key errors here before opening the Remote-SSH log. If the command-line connection fails, the extension cannot repair it.

Connect with Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…
- In VS Code, open the Command Palette with F1 or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux, or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
- Run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host….
- Choose an existing host, or enter the same
user@hostnamevalue that worked in your terminal. If you use a custom port or key, selecting an SSH configuration entry is preferable. - If VS Code asks for the remote platform, select Linux or Windows to match the VPS. The choice tells the extension which server commands to use.
- Accept the host-key prompt only after verifying the identity of the VPS. Enter the account password or key passphrase when requested.
- Wait while Remote-SSH downloads, installs, and starts VS Code Server. The status bar changes to show the connected host when initialization finishes.
The first connection can take longer than later connections because the server component and selected remote extensions must be installed. Keep the window open until the status bar reports the remote host rather than your local machine.
Open and work on VPS files
- After the remote window is connected, choose File > Open Folder.
- Enter or browse to the project directory on the VPS, such as
/var/www/appor/home/deploy/project. - Confirm the folder selection. VS Code Explorer now displays files from the VPS.
- Open the integrated terminal. Its shell starts on the remote host, so commands such as
git, package managers, compilers, and service scripts run against the VPS. - Install extensions when prompted. Extensions marked as available in the remote context are installed on the VPS; extensions that only affect the local UI remain on your computer.
File edits are written directly to the remote directory. Check Linux ownership and permissions before editing deployment directories. If the SSH account cannot write a file, VS Code will show the same permission error a shell command would show; use the correct project account or fix ownership through an administrator rather than running the editor as root.
Open a workspace
For a multi-folder project, use File > Open Workspace after connecting. Save the workspace in a location appropriate to your workflow. A workspace opened in a remote window retains its remote folder references, but a teammate still needs SSH access and a matching configuration to use it.
Save a reusable SSH configuration
Manual entry is adequate for a one-time connection. For a recurring VPS, create a local SSH config entry with Remote-SSH: Open Configuration File…, or edit your user SSH configuration directly. A typical entry is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Host my-vps
User deploy
HostName 203.0.113.10
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
Host is the nickname shown by Remote Explorer. User is the remote account, HostName is the DNS name or address, and IdentityFile points to the private key on your local computer. If the SSH service listens on another port, add a line such as Port 2222.

| Method | Repeatability | Identity files and ports | Team maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
Enter user@hostname manually |
Fast for a single test; easy to mistype on later sessions. | Requires extra prompts or command-line options for nondefault keys and ports. | Each person maintains their own details. |
| Saved SSH config host | One named entry appears in Remote Explorer and the host picker. | Stores IdentityFile, Port, jump-host settings, and other SSH options in one place. |
Review changes centrally, while keeping private keys and user names appropriate for each person. |
After saving the file, run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host… and select my-vps. You can also verify the alias independently with ssh my-vps. If the alias is missing, check that you edited the configuration file VS Code opened for your current operating-system user.
What happens during VS Code Server installation
Remote-SSH negotiates an SSH session, identifies the remote platform, and places a matching VS Code Server build on the VPS. It then starts the server and forwards communication through SSH; you do not need to expose a separate public web port for the editor. The server download is why outbound HTTPS from the VPS matters even when inbound SSH works.
The remote server needs the shell and utility dependencies listed earlier. A minimal image may be able to accept SSH but still fail at this stage if bash, tar, and curl or wget are absent. Install those packages through your distribution’s package manager, then reconnect. On a glibc-incompatible distribution such as Alpine, installing the missing utilities does not make the platform supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Troubleshoot failed connections
The SSH command times out
- Confirm the VPS is running and the address resolves to the current IP.
- Check the VPS firewall and any provider-level network firewall for the SSH port, normally 22.
- Verify that your own network allows outbound SSH. A corporate or hotel network may block non-HTTPS traffic.
- Test the exact port with
ssh -pand confirm that the SSH daemon is listening on that port.
Do not keep changing VS Code settings while the direct SSH command still times out. The extension uses that same network path.
Permission denied or repeated password prompts
- Confirm the user name; a VPS image may disable direct root login or provide a distribution-specific account.
- Check that the public key is in the account’s authorized-key file and that the private key path in SSH config is correct.
- Run
ssh -v user@hostnameto see which keys the client offers. Remove stale keys from an agent if the server rejects an unintended key. - Verify private-key permissions and use the matching passphrase.
Because VS Code can open several sessions, a password that works once may still result in further prompts. Key authentication or an SSH agent usually provides a smoother session.
Best Value
Host key or DNS errors
If SSH warns that the host identification changed, stop and verify the VPS was rebuilt or its address reassigned. Do not blindly delete a known-hosts entry: a changed key can indicate that you reached the wrong machine. For a legitimate rebuild, remove the old entry using your operating system’s SSH tooling, confirm the new fingerprint through a trusted console, and reconnect.
VS Code Server download or startup fails
- Check outbound HTTPS from the VPS to
update.code.visualstudio.comandvscode.download.prss.microsoft.com. - Ensure the remote account can create files in its home directory and temporary directories.
- Verify that
/bin/bash,tar, and eithercurlorwgetare installed. - Look at View > Output, select Remote – SSH, and read the first reported error rather than only the final connection message.
- If the VPS is Alpine or another non-glibc system, move the project to a supported host or use a workflow designed for that operating system.
The connection succeeds but an extension fails
Remote-SSH itself can be functioning while a language server, debugger, or native tool fails. Reinstall that extension in the remote context, check its stated platform support, and inspect its output channel. On ARM hosts, extensions containing x86-native binaries may not run even though the VS Code Server does.
Files are missing or read-only
Confirm that you opened the intended remote folder rather than a local copy. In the integrated terminal, run pwd and inspect ownership with your system’s file-listing command. A read-only file system, incorrect Unix ownership, or a deployment directory protected from the login account requires an administrator-level fix; changing editor settings will not bypass operating-system permissions.
Disconnect safely and reconnect later
To end the session, choose File > Close Remote Connection. This closes the remote VS Code window; it does not shut down the VPS or stop your application. You can reconnect from the Remote Explorer or by running Remote-SSH: Connect to Host… again. The VS Code Server normally remains installed so later connections start faster, but removing the extension or cleaning the server directory will require another download.
A practical first-connection checklist
- VS Code and Remote – SSH are installed locally.
ssh user@hostnamesucceeds outside VS Code.- The account has a working password or a correctly installed public key.
- The SSH port is allowed by both VPS and provider firewalls.
- The remote operating system is supported and has Bash,
tar, andcurlorwget. - The VPS has at least 1 GB RAM; 2 GB and two CPU cores are the recommended baseline from Microsoft.
- Outbound HTTPS is allowed for VS Code Server downloads.
- You selected the correct remote platform and opened the project folder after the status bar showed the host.
Once these checks pass, Remote – SSH gives you a direct, repeatable way to edit and run code on the VPS while keeping the familiar VS Code interface on your computer.
