How to Connect to SQL Server with a Stable DNS Name

A friendly DNS name makes SQL Server easier to address, but clients still need the right instance or port, network access, and a matching TLS certificate identity.

A friendly DNS name lets clients refer to a SQL Server by a stable name in their connection strings. It does not, by itself, specify a named instance or custom port, and it is different from a SQL Server client alias, which is configured on clients and can bundle connection details. For a working connection, verify the instance, port, TCP/IP configuration, network access, and TLS certificate name.

DNS name or SQL Server client alias: what is the difference?

Both can provide an alternate name for connecting to SQL Server, but they work at different layers.

Aspect DNS name SQL Server client alias
Where it is configured In DNS; clients use the name in a connection string if they can resolve it. On each client that uses it; the client must have matching alias configuration.
What it identifies or contains A server name. It does not encode a SQL instance or custom TCP port. An alternate connection name that can encapsulate protocol and connection details, such as a port or pipe.
Client coverage Usable by clients that can resolve the DNS name. Requires the alias configuration on each participating client.

Microsoft documents SQL Server client aliases as client-side settings. For SQL Server 2022 and later, SQL Server Configuration Manager does not support creating these aliases; Microsoft points to SQL Server Client Network Utility instead. See Microsoft’s SQL Server alias instructions.

A DNS name is often the simpler choice when you want a consistent server name across clients. Microsoft also documents a DNS alias feature for Azure SQL Database that can redirect an alias to another server, for example during a test-to-production transition or a move. That is an Azure SQL Database service feature; it should not be confused with an ordinary DNS record used for other SQL Server deployments. See Microsoft’s Azure SQL Database DNS alias overview.

What to put in the connection string

A DNS name supplies the server name, but your connection still needs to reach the correct SQL Server endpoint. Microsoft’s documented server connection format is [<protocol>:]<instance>[,<port>]. For TCP, you can specify the protocol and port explicitly. For example, a default instance on a custom port could be written as tcp:sqlprod.example.com,51433.

TCP port 1433 is the default for a default SQL Server instance, but an administrator can configure a different port. A DNS name alone does not tell a client which custom port to use. Microsoft’s connection documentation explains the connection string syntax and server naming options.

If you connect to a named instance

A named instance uses a form such as sqlprod.example.cominstance. Named instances may use dynamically assigned TCP ports; SQL Server Browser can provide the port information clients need for instance discovery. If discovery is unavailable, or the instance uses a known custom port, configure the connection with the required port information rather than assuming the DNS name will supply it. See Microsoft’s SQL Server Browser guidance.

Set up the name and confirm the SQL endpoint

  1. Create or configure the DNS name. Have the DNS administrator create a name that resolves to the intended SQL Server endpoint. Confirm it resolves from the network where the application runs; internal DNS and suffix behavior can differ from what a client sees elsewhere.
  2. Choose the connection target. Decide whether the application will connect to a default instance, a named instance, or a specific TCP port. Put the needed instance or port information in the connection string.
  3. Enable and configure TCP/IP when using TCP. On SQL Server for Windows, verify TCP/IP is enabled for the instance and that it listens on the intended port. For a named instance, account for dynamic ports and SQL Server Browser if clients rely on discovery.
  4. Allow the network path. Ensure the selected port is allowed by the server firewall and any network firewalls between client and server.
  5. Check certificate identity. If encryption is enabled, confirm that the name used by the client is compatible with the SQL Server certificate, or configure the expected certificate name as described below.
  6. Use the DNS name in the application connection string. For example, a TCP connection to a custom port can use Server=tcp:sqlprod.example.com,51433; alongside the application’s normal authentication and database settings.

Microsoft’s TCP/IP protocol instructions cover enabling the protocol for SQL Server on Windows. Exact DNS record procedures, change controls, and cache behavior depend on your DNS infrastructure.

Will a DNS name cause a TLS certificate mismatch?

It can. A DNS alias may resolve correctly while TLS certificate validation fails because the connection name does not match the certificate’s Common Name (CN) or Subject Alternative Name (SAN). The client validates the certificate identity, not just whether DNS found a server.

With Microsoft.Data.SqlClient 5.0 and later, the HostNameInCertificate connection option lets you specify the name to check in the certificate when it differs from the server name used in the connection. Set it to the identity the server certificate actually covers, and ensure the certificate is otherwise trusted and valid. Do not make disabling certificate validation the routine fix. See Microsoft’s SqlClient encryption and certificate validation guidance.

DNS resolves, but the SQL connection still fails

Name resolution confirms only that the client can find an address for the name. It does not prove that the SQL service is listening, that the port is reachable, or that the client, connection string, and TLS settings are correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the fully qualified DNS name from the client network. Confirm it resolves to the intended endpoint. If the full name works but a short name fails, investigate DNS suffix configuration.
  2. Test the actual TCP port. In PowerShell, run Test-NetConnection <server> -Port <port>, substituting the DNS name and SQL Server’s configured port. A failed test points toward name resolution, routing, or firewall access; a successful test shows the port is reachable, not that SQL authentication or TLS will succeed.
  3. If the port is reachable, inspect client-side settings. Check the connection string, driver and application provider, any SQL Server client alias, and TLS configuration. A client alias may override or change how the connection is made.
  4. If the port is not reachable, inspect the server and network path. Verify that SQL Server is listening on TCP/IP at that port and that firewalls and routing allow traffic from the client.
  5. For named instances, verify discovery or specify the port. Confirm SQL Server Browser is available if the client depends on it, or configure the known instance port explicitly.
  6. For a certificate error, compare names. Check the connection name against the certificate CN/SAN and, when appropriate, set HostNameInCertificate in Microsoft.Data.SqlClient 5.0 or later.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies client application and driver issues, TLS support, 32-bit versus 64-bit SQL aliases, hosts-file entries, and incorrect DNS suffixes as possible causes. Its practical clue is that “full name connects; short name fails.” See Microsoft’s SQL Server network connectivity troubleshooting guide.
