On Windows, a pen button can perform a right-click, but its behavior depends on the pen and settings.
What happens when you press the S Pen button?
The side button does not have one universal action. On a Galaxy phone or tablet, Samsung documents pressing it while the pen hovers as a way to open Air Command. On a Windows PC, a pen button may be configured to act as a right-click. These actions are different: Air Command is Samsung’s feature menu, while a right-click normally opens the context menu for an item or app.

On a Galaxy phone or tablet: open Air Command
With the S Pen removed, Air Command may appear automatically. If the pen is already out, hover it over the screen and press the side button. You can also tap the floating Air Command icon if it is enabled. Samsung’s menu provides shortcuts such as note-taking, selection, and translation, though available features and settings vary by device and software.

So if the button opens Air Command instead of an app’s context menu, that is the documented behavior on supported Galaxy devices—not evidence that the pen is acting as a standard right-click.

On Windows: check the pen-button setting
Microsoft’s general Windows pen guidance describes an optional pen button as one that can perform right-clicks. That guidance does not guarantee that every S Pen will right-click on every Windows computer or in every app; the pen, device, driver, and configuration matter.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
- Review the available shortcut-button options. Windows settings can control actions such as tapping, double-tapping, or holding the button, depending on the device and pen.
- Try the configured action in the app where you need a context menu. App behavior and available mappings can differ.
On a Samsung Galaxy Book: distinguish Air Command from right-click
Samsung’s Galaxy Book instructions describe hovering until the pointer appears, then pressing the S Pen button to launch Air Command. That is a Samsung shortcut menu, not necessarily the context menu for the item under the pointer. Air Command support, setup, and versions vary across Galaxy Book models and release years.

If the button does not do what you expect
- Identify the device and goal. Check whether you have a Galaxy phone or tablet, a Galaxy Book, or another Windows PC—and whether you want Air Command or an app’s context menu.
- Confirm pen compatibility. Samsung lists S Pen compatibility and features by device and pen. Bluetooth and Air Actions support also vary, so do not assume every S Pen works the same way across Galaxy models.
- On Windows, inspect pen settings. Use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink to see which button actions your device exposes.
- On a Galaxy Book, check Samsung support and software. If Air Command will not launch, Samsung recommends checking that the Air Command app and relevant pen drivers or services are present and using Samsung Update where appropriate. The exact steps depend on the model and Air Command version.
Samsung’s model-specific compatibility information is important if a pen is missing or damaged: a replacement must match the device, and replacing a pen does not by itself guarantee a right-click function.
