To connect to an Arma Reforger server, use Multiplayer → Community and either find the server in the browser or choose Direct Join and enter its IP address and port. The official Bohemia Interactive server documentation lists 2001 UDP as the default game port, but a hosted server may use a different port shown in its control panel. A join password is separate from the administrator password.

Choose the right connection method
Use the server browser when the server is public and discoverable. Use Direct Join when you have a server’s address, when the server is hidden from the list, or when searching by name does not work.

The menu labels above come from hosting-provider join guides and can change with a game update. If your build uses slightly different wording, look for the Community section under Multiplayer and the Direct Join command.
What you need before you start
- An installed, up-to-date copy of Arma Reforger.
- The exact server name for a browser search, or the server’s IPv4 address and port for Direct Join.
- The join password, if the server is protected.
- A client version that matches the server version.
- A network that permits the required UDP traffic.
Ask the server owner for all connection details in one message. A useful format is 203.0.113.25:2001 plus the join password, if any. Do not assume that every server uses 2001: the official documentation identifies it as the default, while hosts can assign another public port.

Join through the server browser
- Launch Arma Reforger and open Multiplayer.
- Select the Community tab.
- Use the search field to enter the server name. Search for a distinctive part of the name if the full title produces no result.
- Select the matching server and choose the join command.
- Enter the server’s join password when prompted.
- Wait for the connection and map loading process to finish.
A server that does not appear may be intentionally hidden or may not be advertising correctly. Hosting guides associate browser visibility with the server’s visible setting. The official configuration template contains that flag, but the exact behavior is not fully described in the available official excerpt. If the owner confirms the server is running and you still cannot find it, Direct Join is the more reliable test.
Search tips
- Check spelling, punctuation and capitalization in the name supplied by the owner.
- Remove clan tags or decorative characters from the search and try a shorter unique word.
- Confirm that you are looking under Community, not an alternate multiplayer category.
- Ask whether the server is currently online and whether its visible setting is enabled.
Join with Direct Join
- Open Multiplayer.
- Open the Community tab.
- Select Direct Join.
- Enter the server’s IPv4 address.
- Enter the UDP port supplied by the server owner. Use 2001 only when the owner has not assigned another port and the server follows the official default.
- Confirm the connection.
- Enter the join password if the server requests one.
Direct Join does not replace the password. It only bypasses discovery in the browser. A protected server still asks for its game password during the connection attempt.

Use the address and port as separate fields if the dialog provides separate boxes. If the dialog shows one endpoint field, enter the address in the format supplied by the game, normally an IPv4 address followed by the port. Do not substitute a website address, a local network name or an administrator login.
The available secondary guidance describes IPv4 entry and does not establish current IPv6 support. If an owner gives you an IPv6 address, ask for an IPv4 endpoint or confirm support for your exact game version before troubleshooting further.
Which port should you use?
According to the Bohemia Interactive Community server-configuration documentation, the default game socket is UDP port 2001. The setting is called bindPort, accepts values from 1 through 65,535, and controls the UDP port on which the server listens.

The default is not a promise that every hosted server uses 2001. A host can expose a different public port, and that value must be used for Direct Join. Always treat the port shown in the owner’s panel or connection announcement as authoritative.
Bind port and public port
The server configuration also has publicPort. It is the UDP port registered with the backend. When the server has a public IP address, the documentation says it should normally match bindPort. When the server is behind forwarding, publicPort is the externally forwarded port that players use.
The official guidance recommends leaving bindPort out of the configuration unless a specific port-forwarding arrangement requires it. Omitting it allows the server’s bind behavior to match the public-port configuration as intended by the documentation.
Ports relevant to a hosted server

These are server-side firewall and forwarding requirements, not extra values to enter in the client’s Direct Join dialog. Players normally enter only the game address and game port.
Startup parameters can override the file
The startup parameter -bindPort overrides both gameHostBindPort and gameHostRegisterBindPort values in the configuration. If a server appears to be listening on a different port than the configuration file indicates, the startup command may be the reason.

The older name gameHostBindPort was used before version 0.9.8.73. When diagnosing an older configuration, check whether it still uses that legacy name and whether the launch command supplies an override.
Understand the two server passwords
Arma Reforger distinguishes between the password that permits players to join and the password that grants administrator access. Confusing them is a common reason for a failed connection or a failed admin login.

If you only want to play, request the game.password value. Do not enter the admin password into the join prompt. At least one hosted-server panel also requires join passwords to be alphanumeric, without spaces or special characters; ask the owner what rules apply to that particular host.
What to do when the server is not in the browser
- Confirm the owner says the server is online rather than restarting or updating.
- Check the server name again, using a shorter search term.
- Ask the owner to verify the
visiblesetting. Hosting guides state that visibility controls whether the server is listed; the exact behavior can vary with the game version. - Request the current IPv4 address and port.
- Try Direct Join with those details.
A hidden server can still be reachable by address. Conversely, a visible server can be listed but unreachable if its UDP port is blocked or its registration data is stale.

Direct Join immediately fails
Recheck every character in the IPv4 address and port. A one-digit error sends the connection to a different endpoint. Confirm that you are using UDP and that the owner has not changed the assigned port. The official default is 2001 UDP, but a host-specific value overrides it.

The connection times out
A timeout usually means the endpoint cannot be reached. Ask the owner to verify that the game port is open in the server firewall and forwarded to the running server. If the owner operates the server behind a router, the external public port must forward to the server’s listening port. Players cannot repair a closed server port from the game client.
You see “Version mismatch”
The client and server must run the same game version. Update the game, restart it after the update completes, and ask the owner whether the server has also updated. If the owner runs a managed server, they may need to restart or update the server instance before clients can join.
The password is rejected
- Re-enter the join password carefully; passwords are not interchangeable with the admin password.
- Ask whether the owner changed
game.passwordrecently. - Check for accidental spaces copied before or after the password.
- If the server is hosted, verify whether its control panel permits only alphanumeric characters.
You join but cannot use admin commands
Joining proves only that the game password was accepted. Administrator access requires the separate game.passwordAdmin value and the in-game #login command. The admin password cannot contain spaces.
The server appears online but nobody can join
This points to a server-side configuration or network problem rather than a browser-search problem. The owner should compare bindPort and publicPort, inspect any -bindPort startup override, and verify that the relevant UDP ports are open. The documented setup identifies 2001 UDP for the public game port, 17777 for A2S and 19999 for RCON.
If you operate the server
Players need a stable endpoint, but the administrator must also configure the server to listen, register and accept connections correctly.
Minimum connection checklist
- Choose the game UDP port. The documented default is 2001.
- Set
publicPortto the externally reachable UDP port. - When a public IP is used directly, keep
bindPortandpublicPortaligned. - Leave
bindPortout unless a specific forwarding design requires an explicit value. - Open or forward the required UDP traffic in the firewall and router.
- Set
game.passwordonly if the server should require a join password. - Set
visibleaccording to whether the server should be advertised in the browser. - Set
maxPlayersfrom 1 to 128. The documented default is 64. - Use the recommended
crossPlatformconfiguration for cross-platform play rather than relying on the oldersupportedPlatformsapproach.
If you change the port, publish the new public value to players. Giving out the default 2001 while the host is listening on another port guarantees failed Direct Join attempts.
Keep credentials separated
Give regular players only the game join password. Keep game.passwordAdmin private, and configure rcon.password separately if remote console access is needed. RCON will not start unless its password is present, has at least three characters and contains no spaces.

A practical connection checklist
Before asking for help, collect the answers to these questions:
- Am I using the correct Community menu and the current game build?
- Do I have the server’s exact IPv4 address and public UDP port?
- Does that port come from the host’s panel, or am I merely assuming the 2001 default?
- Is the server supposed to be visible in the browser?
- Am I entering the join password rather than the admin password?
- Does the client version match the server version?
- Has the owner confirmed that the game port is open and forwarded?
These checks distinguish a client menu problem from a server advertisement, password, version or network-port problem. If the browser cannot find the server, Direct Join with a verified endpoint is the fastest way to determine whether it is hidden or unreachable.
